VT Santa Fe, Fri June 30, 1972 the new MEXICAN B1 oi fs Fischer accuses Russian of psychological warfare By MILTON R1CHMAN UPI Sports Writer NEW YORK The more Bobby Fischer thinks about it, the more it bugs him. Why Reykjavik, Iceland? Why not Rome? Fischer would like to" know. Why not Paris, Oslo, Zurich, Dallas or New York? Or even Moscow? Any large city where theres people, activity and decent restaurants would be fine. Some place at least where theres something to do at night. Bobby Fischer, Americas 29-jier-old chess genius, has a theory about why Reykjavik was picked as the site of the example, he competed with 15 other top athletes in the Dewars Sports Celebrity tennis championships at LaCosta, Calif and it was a little funny to watch such headliners as Rick Barry, Deacon Jones, and Elgin Bavlor all ask Fischer for his autograph In the finals of the tournament, Hank Greenberg, the baseball Hall of Famer, and Bob Bod, the basketball coach at Southern California, heat ().

Simpson and Gail Goodrich for the title. Bobby Fischer was among the losers. championships," says Fischer. Spassky wasnt even there when the international governing body chose the site. A Russian delegation was there and they picked the site Fischer feels the championships have become a political matter.

That annoys him. But it hasn't lessened any of his desire to beat Spassky. Fischer has a lot of that same killer instinct Jack Dempsey had when he was fighting. Some of that instinct shows up even when hes not sitting at the chess board. Earlier this month, for world championship which starts this Sunday.

The Russians are the ones who picked Reykjavik. Fischer thinks the Russians have a motive. He thinks they want to hide the championship because he feels hes going to take it from the Soviet Unions Boris Spassky. Whats more, Fischer thinks the Russians know hes going to do it. In his own way, Fischer is a demonstrator.

He has been demonstrating the way he feels about having to play in Reykjavik by taking his good old time getting there. but from personal experience. He says there is so little to do there, particularly at night, a guy can go out of his everloving mind. Not that Fischer is a rounder. If anything, hes much more of a loner, but there are times he would like to become part of the general mix, or at least observe it, and how can he possibly do that when there is no general mix? He also says the television coverage will be limited.

If he beats Spassky, he doesnt see why it should be some kind of secret. Fischer originally planned to This has shaken up a lot of people but Fischer had a reason for' his actions. Call it one-upsmanship if you like. Boris Spassky neednt worry about Fischer not making it for their first match Sunday though. Bobby Hull may or may not play for the Winnipeg Jets next season and Rick Barry may or may not play for the Golden State Warriors, but there is no way Bobby Fischer ever is going to miss playing for the world championship of chess.

Even in Reykjavik. Mainly because he thinks hes going to win. I wouldn't be at all surprised if hes right, and that has nothing to do with chauvinism. Spassky is good, but Fischer is better, and when the tall, curly-haired New Yorker is right, hes like Joe Frazier and Tom Seaverwhen theyre right. Meaning nobodys going to beat him.

Fischer doesnt hold back. He is exceptionally outspoken and honest, and when you hear his objections to playing in Reykjavik, they do make a good deal of sense. Fischer has been there, so when he talks about Reykjavik he isnt doing so from hearsay go to the world championships with only one other person; Spassky is already in Reykjavik with what amounts to an entourage. Fischer reads significance into that also because the championship goes on for some time and while Spassky will have people to talk to and help him relax, Fischer won't. Fischer doesnt think any of these things are pure accidents.

He sees them all as part of a general program by the Soviets to try to beat him psychologically. Mattioli said Pennsylvania Gov. Milton J. Shapp suggested the race would interfere with flood recovery operations.

But USAC officials felt Mattioli acted too quickly in postponing the race. I dont consider any of their reasons legitimate, said Jep Cadou, a USAC spokesman. We offered to assist in solving their problems point by point, but we were rejected. Cadou, Smyth and USAC competition director Dick King showed up at the track Thursday to conduct time trials but found the gate locked. After the USAC officials were turned away, more than 40 racing teams which had been at the Pocono mountain track since June 17, packed up their cars and left.

This is ridiculous, Cadou said. Were locked out. Cadou said the raceway would forfeit to USAC some $275,000 in guaranteed purse money. But a Pocono spokesman said later Thursday he hoped a settlement would be reached over the weekend. (UPI) -The United States Auto Club (USAC) is expected to announce Monday whether it has approved a postponement date for the Schaefer 500. USAC Executive Director Bill Smyth said Thursday his organization will meet this weekend to determine if it should resanction the event, originally scheduled for Sunday, July 2. The owners of Pocono International Raceway postponed the race Wednesday night despite the angry objections of USAC officials and some drivers.

Open Golf Championship. 1 But Shirley, the only one of 150 players to par the rugged Winged Foot Golf Club East Course Thursday, has also had more physical problems than most anyone. In 1960 she had to overcome a serious spinal injury. Five years later she suffered a badly damaged ankle in an automobile accident. Just a year ago she had to withdraw from the Ladies PGA Championship, a title she was defending, because of the ankle.

She underwent surgery last July and again in March to fuse the bone. Doctors told her shed never play pro golf again. But spunky Shirley proved them wrong. She came back, walked over the layout and putted her way to a 72 and a onestroke margin over Pam Barnett and Betsy Cullen. Such friendly odds you bet one dollar to win a hundred were certain to attract plenty of cash support for Jim Connors and Chris Evert. Connors, the 19-year-old lefthander from Belleville, 111., has reached the final 16 of the mens division. Miss Evert, 17-year-old star from Fort Lauderdale, has reached the last 32 in the womens singles. The odds seem rather big to me, Connors said.

I would have thought we have a better chance than the bookmakers ch, Connors said. Dibley was hitting rockets. Miss Evert, seeded fourth in her first Wimbledon, could have an easier path to tread. But even if everything goes well in her next two matches she faces the prospect of meeting Australias Evonne Goolagong, the defending champion, in the semifinals. Connors forged his way into the last 16 by downing Italys No.

1, Adriano Panatta, 6-3, 0-6, 6-4, 8-6. He was joined there by two other Americans top-seeded Stan Smith of Pasadena, and Jim McManus of Berkeley, Calif. Thirteen American girls have come through to the last 32 in the womens singles. Apart from Miss Evert, they include second favorite Billie Jean KinP, seem to think. If Connors reaches the quarter-finals he is likely to come up against Romanias Ilie Nastase, the No.

2 seed. Nastase, playing better on grass than he every has done before, is a tough proposition for anyone in a tournament weakened by the absence of the big stars of World Championship Tennis But even if the unseeded Connors got past Nastase he could find himself in a semifinal against the man he fears most of all Colin Dibley of Australia. It was Dibley, a power server with shoulders like an ox, who eliminated Connors teacher, Pancho Gonzales, in the second round this year.
