Santa Fe, Thurs July 13, 192 THE NEW MEXICAN B1 Fischer loses 1st match; now threatens a walkout Germany and strode to a backstage dressing room. Schmid followed him, and Fischer said he wouldnt continue play unless a movie camera 150 feet from the board was shut off. Schmid said he couldnt order the camera removed Fischer stayed away for 30 minutes, then came back and resumed play. After Spasskys 56th move Fischer resigned. He reached over and stopped the clock after 63 minutes had elapsed, offered Spassky his hand, folded his scorecard and walked out.

He paused once to wave to the audience, which was applauding Spassky. When, the play resumed Wednesday, Spassky had his king, a bishop that controlled the black diagonals and three pawns. Fischer was down to his king and five pawns, two of them loose on the kings side. One of Spasskys pawns threatened a Fischer pawn. In his first move, Spassky captured that pawn.

Fischer recaptured with his king and the game turned into an effort by Fischer to push his pawns a square at a time to the last rank under the escort of his king. After his walkout he made an ineffectual sidestep with his king. In ensuing play all the pawns on the kings side were lost. Fischer shifted his king in a hopeless struggle to the other side of the board, where two of his pawns and two of Spasskys blocked each others passage. Fischer couldnt unblock because Spasskys bishop could protect his position from long range Finally, after Spasskys 56th move his king approached the jam on the queens side Fischer gave up.

could not be heard by Fischer, but aides said the knowledge of its presence unnerved him. Chief referee Lothar Schmid of West Germany, who makes the decisions on all contested points in connection with the match, told Fischer during his walkout there was nothing he could do about the camera. Film and television rights for the match have been sold to an American promoter, and Fischer and Spassky are to get a share of the proceeds, estimated at a minimum of $27,500 each. Its up to Lothar Schmid whether Bobby plays, one of Fischers advisers said today. Contacted at his hotel, Schmid said: There will be a match tonight.

If Fisher doesnt appear, he will take the consequences. With a maximum of 23 more games to be played, Robert Byrne, the second ranking U.S. grandmaster, said Fischer's loss isnt necessarily all that significant. Either of these players can come back and win. A victory yields one point, a draw half a point, and after Wednesdays match Spassky needed II more points in the 24game series to retain his title.

Fischer needs 12'i points to end the 24-year Soviet monopoly of the title. Today he plays the white pieces, which gives him the first move and a slight advantage. The first game in the match began Tuesday, and Spassky adjourned it after 40 moves with Fischer in bad straits. Five minutes after the game resumed late Wednesday afternoon, Fischer stood up, spoke animatedly to chief referee Lothar Schmid of West REYKJAVIK, Iceland (AP) Bobby Fischer today was reported threatening to break off his' world championship chess match with Boris Spassky unless all movie cameras are removed from the playing hall. Its quite serious.

He may not play at all, said a member of Fischers entourage who asked not to be identified. Fischer was scheduled to meet the world champion from the Soviet Union later today at 11 p.m. MDT for the second game of their 24-game match. The American challenger lost the first game Wednesday night. Fischer staged a 30-minute walkout shortly after the play began Wednesday, complaining that a movie camera 150 feet away was making him nervous.

The camera was hardly visible in the dimness outside the lighted players circle, and it Cowboys Duane Thomas fined; then he leaves training camp Liscio, who ended retirement at mid-season last year to help out when injuries cut into the offensive line ranks, was a mainstay with the Cowboys through the Supr Bowl. We were in trouble last year and he came in without having time to really get in shape, Landry said. It was a courageous performance. You always miss a team player like Tony. I DIDNT LOSE PART OF THIS EAR BY BEIN NICE This veteran of the rodeo circuit will be doing his best this weekend to unseat as quickly as possible any intrepid cowboy who tries to ride him in Rodeo de Santa Fe competition.

Rodeo action begins tonight at 8. (New Mexican Sports Photo by Bob Dimery) Record number of entries received for Rodeo de SF Junker, offensive lineman, Wisconsin-Milwaukee; Grover Truslow, offensive lineman, East Carolina; Mike Bowling, defensive Arizona State; Roy Gladen, wide receiver, U.S. College; Mose Lane, defensive back, Fort Valley State; Jim Dougherty, linebacker, West Carolina. Gary Orsini, a defensive back from Marshall State, also left camp voluntarily. Johnson, it was reported, was requested to stay on as chief at Ruidoso.

However, it was also reported he wished to come to Santa Fes track. See story on possible purchase of Ruidoso Downs and Sunland Park by Kodiak Industries, Inc. on B-2. The Cowboys coach also said 11 free agents were cut by the team during practice Wednesday. They included: A1 Baker, defensive back, Jackson State; Scott Quisling, offensive lineman, St.

Cloud State; Greg Ogle, defensive back, Morgan State; Jim Sherbert, linebacker, Oregon State; Bruce Nichols, offensive lineman, Jackson State; Bruce general manager this past spring. Murph Palmer, general manager at the track last year, was retained as Taylors assistant. Taylor is the third general manager the track has had. Palmer was followed by Weldon Gray of Albuquerque who held the job following the end of the 1971 season for five months. Taylor may be replaced as Santa Fe Downs chief A near-record 207 entires were received by Wednesdays deadline for the 23rd annual Rodeo de Santa Fe which starts tonight.

Included were half a dozen members of the top 15 nationally in one or more of the five regular adult, male events. Also included were girls barrel racers, many Santa Fe area competitors and visiting entries in the grand entry parade. The youthful Santa Feans are high schoolers or recent graduates of the newly blossomed high school rodeo program here. Perhaps the biggest names signed up so far are those of Jim Mihalek and Kenny Pintt in the bareback bronc riding, and THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. (UPI) Controversial Dallas Cowboys running back Duane Thomas, fined Wednesay for reporting several hours late to the teams training site, early today walked out of camp without any explanation.

A Dallas Cowboys spokesman said the team presumed the Super Bowl star was somewhere in Los Angeles. Thomas and a friend were last seen headed south in a rented car, the spokesman said. Nobody not even (Cowboys Coach) Tom Landry knows where they are right now. Thomas, who has been renegotiating a three-year contract with team president Tex Schramm for the past few months, was to have reported during the afternoon Wednesday along with other Cowboys veterans. Thomas, however, told a driver sent to pick him up at a Los Angeles airport about 40 miles north of the teams training site that the airline had lost some of his baggage and that he was staying over to retrieve it.

Duane missed rollcall for our team and he will be fined like any other player, Landry said at that time. Later in the evening, Thomas called camp and asked for another driver. He arrived at California Lutheran College a couple of hours later with Redic Price, a rookie football player who had been cut by the Cowboys several days before. The two met with Tom Landry and talked with Price doing most of the talking, the spokesman said. Landry said he wasnt sure what Thomas wanted but sent him and Price out for dinner at a local restaurant.

According to the spokesman, Thomas then rented a car and left with Price. Coach Landry wants to talk with Thomas before he makes a decision regarding him, he said. But Thomas of course will be fined. The only other Cowboys veterans missing the mandatory roll call were offensive tackle Tony Liscio and linebacker D. D.

Lewis. Lewis was excused for college classes and was expected to arrive in camp Saturday. Liscio announced his retirement. Tony has contributed a lot to our success over the years, Landry said, and his contribution last year was particularly outstanding. TOOK TWO FEATURES YONKERS, N.

Chuck Taylor said this morning reports that he is being replaced as general manager of. Santa Fe Downs were premature. An Albuquerque television station reported Wednesday night Taylor would be leaving and that Ruidoso Downs general manager Art Johnson would come to Santa Fe.

I dont know where they got that information, Taylor said this morning. The board (Santa Fe Downs board of directors) hasnt acted on it yet to my knowledge. Im pretty sure Im not going to stay on as general manager, but the final decision hasnt been made, he added. The track still has some obligations to me that havent been fulfilled yet, Taylor said.
