Santa Fe, Thurs July 20, 1972 THE NEW MEXICAN B1 pDnit MEXICAN Thera loses 1st bout in Olympic trials but they looked less than sharp in doing so. Busceme decisioned Rufus Dews of Troup, and Valdez whipped Fred Washington of Chicago Heights, Dl. He was coming in on me, Bobick said, and his hands went down for a second. I just threw a short right.lt didnt travel but a foot or so. But it was one of those deadly ones.

Bobick was by far the most impressive of the favorites in action on the first of four nights of trials. The winners here will go to Bear Mountain, N.Y., for pre-Olympic training and will face only one last obstacle a challenge match against, a competitor of the boxing committees choosing before becoming an official part of the Olympic team. Lightweight James Busceme of Beaumont, and welterweight Jesse Valdez of Houston advanced as expected, FORT WORTH, Tex. -Danny Ray Theragood, National Golden Gloves champion from Santa' Fe, N.M. was eliminated in the first round of the Olympic boxing trials here Wednesday by 1971 AAU titleholder Ricardo Carreras of New York.

The 19-year-old New Mexico ace lost a decision to the New Yorker on the first day of the trials in the bantamweight (119 pounds) class. Theragood had advanced from local victories through the state Golden Gloves tournament and four matches in the national competition this past spring. However, the thin but muscular boxer was bested in AAU tryouts earlier this summer. Other top names were in Texas this week hoping for a shot at a berth on the Olympic boxing team. South Carolina convict Bobby Lee Hunter opens his quest tonight for an Olympic gold medal, but he will have to go some to match the showing Wednesday night by Duane Bobick.

Bobick, the Adonis-like heavyweight from Bowlus, toyed with Clifford Stephens of Newton Falls, Ohio, for a little less than a minute in his first bout in the Olympic boxing trials. Then he caught Stephens with a chopping right hand at 1:01 and Stephens was through for the night. SsOff-road vehicle restriction good AL (BLUE) LEWIS lies dazed on the canvas after being night. LIGHT WHISKY THAT FLYS WITH ANYTHING. DUBLIN, Ireland (AP) It wont go into the record book as another famous long count-like the one in the Jack Demp-sey-Gene Tunney title fight in 1927 but the Muhammad Ali camp claimed today a mixup in timing saved A1 Blue Lewis from a fifth round knockout. Ali, the former world heavyweight champion from Cherry Hill, N.J., stopped Lewis of Detroit in the 11th round Wednesday night for his seventh straight victory in his the affects of a heavy head cold that has troubled him for days for his TKO triumph in Irelands biggest boxing show in years. I think Im fighting far too much and getting a bit stale, said the former champion who is pointing for a return title bout with champion Joe Frazier. Lewis looked dazed in the dressing room and didnt want to talk with newsmen, but he said I was pleased with my performance and I would like to fight Ali again.

Ali, who weighed 217'2 pounds to Lewis 2236 for the scheduled 12-rounder, is scheduled to meet Floyd Patterson, another former world champion, in New York on September 20. 5th game of chess is today REYKJAVIK, Iceland (UPI) Bobby Fischer and Boris Spassky sit down at the chess board again today. But this time it is different Fischer isnt threatening to walk out. The fifth game of the 24-game world chess championship match begins at 5 p.m. (1 p.m.

Fischer, 29, has protested every previous game, mostly because of television cameras in the playing hall. He even failed to turn up for the second game, forfeiting it to Spassky. Going into the fifth game, Spassky leads with 26 points to Fischers 16. The American challenger needs 126 points a win counts one point, a draw '6 for each player to take the title, while the defending champion needs only 12 to retain the championship.

A short right from Ali travelled no more than eight inches and laid Lewis in a twitching heap on the canvas in outdoor Croker Park. The bell sounded the end of the round when the count reached nine.

Later Alis trainer, Angelo Dundee, claimed that the count actually had lasted for 22 seconds according to his own timepiece. Dundee made no formal protest, but indeed the timekeeper had found that two of his watches had stopped during the first round and he had to borrow another. Lending further credence to Dundees contention was that no exact time was given when referee Lew Eskin of New York stopped the fight in the 11th. It was estimated at 1:15 of the round. Under the regulations, motorcycles will be permitted only on improved main roads and all must have adequate mufflers.

Further, dune buggies and ATVs will be restricted to designated areas. At Elephant Butte Lake, these types of vehicles will be allowed only in a special area outside the limits of the park. Other special areas will undoubtedly be established at other parks around the state. Richard Mutz, parks director, said the commissions action was prompted by the increasing number of complaints received by his office from park users concerning the use of off-the-road vehicles in the areas. The Parks and Recreation Commissions action could go a long way in sparking legislation to restrict cycles and ATVs in national forests and city parks.

I have, as mentioned before, watched cyclists roar through crowded parks, and there is no ordinance to prevent this or, further, provide for penalties for riding on the parks. And, while on a horse trip in the Pecos Wilderness last year, I saw cycle tracks on the trail three and four miles inside the boundary fence. It is, of course, illegal to operate power equipment of any kind in the wilderness areas of the United States. It is understood the U.S. Forest Service is looking into the problem of unrestricted use of motorcycles and all-terrain vehicles on the land it oversees.

The New Mexico Fish and Game Commission has outlawed the use of cycles, buggies and ATVs on state land, excluding roads through it, while hunting or fishing. I know, from personal contact with various members of the fish and game department, the majority would like to see these vehicles generally banned from woodlancLuse. The problem with vehicles of this sort is the same as that with guns its not the fault of the machine but the man or woman behind it. The careless operator of a motorcycle brings the public wrath down on the heads of every cylist. FOUR SANTA FE DRIVERS picked up money at Albuquerque Speedway over the past weekend.
