Before the FDA limitations on the use of cyclamates, most artificially sweetened food products contained combinations of cyclamate and saccharin which provided optimum sweetness with minimum bitter aftertaste.

Saccharin remains "as the only approved non-nutritive sweetener available for such products and must, therefore, serve as the basis for providing sweetness in them, Pfizer points out. In the information sheet, Pfizer suggests use of sugar and other carbohydrates, sorbitol, sodium citrate and the flavor enhances Veltol (maltoi) or Veltol Plus (ethyl maltoi) in combination with saccharin to give overall sweetness and flavor balance in, food products. Low levels of sorbitol or sugar provide some initial sweetness to the saccharin system, while sodium citrate is useful in suppressing the bitter aftertaste of the artificial sweetner, the company says. Investigations conducted, by Pfizer on combinations of saccharin with these Ingredients offer guidelines for formulation studies. Pfizer Adds that since relative sweetness is a subjective phenomenon depending upon individual preference, the food processor should investigate variations of his formula based on these suggestions rather than Utilize them exactly as outlined.
