Monday, September 30, 201 3 73 DAILY NEWSNYDailyNews.com Rangers set to roll Center Brad Richards will wing it on left of Derek Stepan and Rick Nash as Rangers go west to begin 2013-14 season. Andrew The-odorakis News BY PAT LEONARD NEW YORK DAILY NEWS BRAD RICHARDS has moved to the wing. Jesper Fast made the roster. Chris Kreider didn't. Injured captain Ryan Callahan said he's almost ready to play, while Carl Hagelin will miss the first 10 games.

The Rangers on Sunday cut down to their 23 -man opening day roster of 14 forwards, seven defensemen and two goalies, revealing first-year coach Alain Vigneault's plan for his team's season-opening, 11-day West-Coast road trip beginning Thursday night in Phoenix. Here is how the dominoes fell: At practice in Greenburgh, Vigneault prac ticed Richards on the left wing of center Derek Stepan, who the coach said "looked real good" in his first practice since re-signing on Thursday. Rick Nash will play right wing on that line. though he did not practice Sunday after taking a shot off his foot in Friday's preseason finale in Las Vegas. "We've still got two guys out, and you've got three centers (Richards, Stepan and Derick Brassard) that want to play in offensive situations," said Richards, who played wing on occasion in Tampa Bay and Dallas.

"I'm playing with Rick and Step, so hopefully we can get something going. If it works, that means we're staying, and if we're staying, that means it's working." Due to injuries to Callahan and Hagelin, the biggest battles in camp occurred on the wings. The Blueshirts kept 2010 sixth-round pick Fast, 2011 first-rounder J.T Miller and veteran bruiser Arron Asham over Kreider, versatile penalty-killer Darroll Powe who will be exposed on waivers until noon Monday and promising young Slovak Marek Hrivik. "As much as I believe that (Kreider) is real close and probably could play at our level right now, he needs to play big minutes and good minutes," Vigneault said of demoting the 2012 postseason darling to the AHL's Hartford Wolf BELMONT RESULTSSunday lst-Off 1:06. "No, of course not," said Fast, whose right-handed shot helped his case with Callahan temporarily sidelined, per Vigneault. "My goal was to make the team when I came here for training camp, but I knew it was going to be hard. We had some injuries here, so that opened some spots." Rounding out the 14 forwards are the second line of Benoit Pouliot, Derick Brassard and Mats Zuccarello, as well as veteran centers Dominic Moore and Brian Boyle and wingers Taylor Pyatt and Derek Dorsett. On defense, Justin Falk beat out Stu Bickel and Conor Allen for the seventh spot, though Vigneault praised Allen, who likely will be a midseason call-up. Falk will back up the top six of Ryan McDonagh, Dan Girardi, Marc Staal, Michael Del Zotto, Anton Stralman and John Moore, with Henrik Lundqvist and Martin Bi-ron in net.

Hagelin (offseason shoulder surgery) will go on the long-term injury list to start the season, which makes him ineligible until an Oct. 29 visit to Long Island. But Callahan, who underwent the same surgery, is so close to healthy that it appears, without setbacks, he should be ready for the Rangers' second game Oct. 7 in Los Angeles. "Basically right now what we're doing right now is holding him back," Vigneault said.

"He wants to play. He thinks he can play. But our doctors cleared him for contact (last Thursday). We need seven to 14 days to make sure he's alright. That should be obviously in the time frame of that first road trip." USC gives Kiffin ax; Red Bulls forge tie with the Seattle Sounders that kept them atop the overall MLS standings.

The East-leading Red Bulls (15-9-7) have 52 points, while the After Alvarez finished off the top half, he had to wait to see if it would become an official no-hitter. A Major League Baseball ruling in 1991 said only complete games of nine or more innings with no hits would Sounders (15-8-6) got their 51st to climb back finals and a berth in the Finals for the third time in four years. I MM IE AGAIN WINS IN DOVER Jimmie Johnson held off Dale Earnhardt Jr. to win for a record eighth time at Dover (Del.) International Speedway, that in the AAA 400. Led by Johnson, the entire top 10 was made up of Chase for the Sprint Cup championship drivers. Southern California fired Lane Kiffin early Sunday morning, ending the coach's tumultuous tenure a few hours after the Trojans lost, 62-41, at Arizona State.

Ed Orgeron was picked as USC's interim head coach by athletic director Pat Haden later in the day. The Trojans (3-2, 0-2 Pac-12) have eight games left. Orgeron was Kiffin's assistant head coach and the former Mississippi head coach. Haden fired Kiffin at the Trojans' private airport terminal when the team plane returned from Arizona, but not before a 45 -minute meeting in which Kiffin tried to change Haden's mind. The Trojans matched the most points allowed in school history in their seventh loss in 1 1 games.

RED BULLS TIE, KEEP LEAD Tim Cahill got control of a loose ball in the penalty area and scored late in the 76th minute, lifting the visiting Red Bulls into a 1-1 tie count. The Marlins loaded the bases and with pinch-hitter Greg Dobbs at bat, Luke Putkonen threw a wild pitch that let Giancar-lo Stanton score. Alvarez took off his batting helmet and started to celebrate while still wearing his batting gloves. Hunter Pence and the Giants finalized a $90 million, five-year contract, a deal that keeps the outfielder off the free-agent market.
