Bond House Espanola's Grown Jewel 1 i ''We want to showcase local talent," Plaza Director Leroy Garcia said. "Getting the word out has been the biggest challenge." The history room contains numerous artifacts and old photographs preserved by the San Gabriel Historical Society. The House itself has its own history. The house's stairway is infamous as the place where Espanola Police shot Dennis Archuleta, also known as the Lavender Kid, April 23, 1958, after he broke into the House. "He wore hair lotion that smelled like lavender," tour guide, Senaida R.

Hall said. "Everywhere he went he left a scent so they know he had been there." 'U'JLV it i- fl'. r- 5 By Sean McAlindin SUN Stal't" Writer The Plaza de Espanola holds of the city's main tourist sites: the Mision Convento and the Bond House. The Mision is a replica of a Spanish colonial church built in 1598 at San Gabriel near the Ohkay Owingeh Pueblo. It will be open this summer every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from noon to 4 p.m.

and on Saturday from II a.m. to 3 p.m. In addition to the rotating local art exhibits inside the, Mision, the backdrop inside the church features painted panels depicting the history of Northern New Mexico. A gift shop is planned to open in the Convento by summer alongside the Global Warming Cafe, which set up shop here in January. Just past the fountains overlooking the Plaza is the Bond House, a local history and contemporary art museum.

This well-preserved 19th century house was purchased by the city of Espanola in 1957 from the Bond family which had settled in the Valley from Canada in the 1800s. Now, the House features a rotating schedule of art exhibits along with a standing museum dedicated to the preservation of local history.
