South ruffed the next diamond, drew one round of trumps and cashed the top spades. When West discarded on the , second spade South saw that the spades were hopeless. The only chance was a club finesse, so South led a club from dummy and finessed with the queen. The finesse worked. South daimed his slani, DEsi ^ERADO NEEDED There would be a different story to tell if East were more of a desperado. East should overtake the king of diamonds at the first trick to return the nine of clubs. What would South forced to make a decision so early? "fhe club finesse is only an even chance, and the odds are better than 5 to 1 that the spades will break reasonably. Obviously, South would reject the club finesse in order to try the spades.
