Mary Martins Treadmill Stint To Be Televised Plan Fight On Foreign Film Sets Serge Krizman, leader of a controversial campaign in Hollywood against asserted excess and unnecessary making of movies overseas, was re-elected president of the Society of Motion Picture Art Directors, for a second term, at the annual membership meeting at the Bel-Air Hotel Wednesday night. Krizman won by ballot over George Van Marter, who in turn was elected vice president of the society, whose members design the sets for the movies and TV shows produced in Hollywood, and on location. Krizman currently is serving as art director on The Frank Sinatra Show, TV series being filmed at Samuel Goldwyn Studios, and Van Marter is art dilector for McCadden Productions at General Service Studios. Malcolm Bert and Lawrence Klein, incumbent secretary and treasurer, respeclively, were unopposed and unanimously reelected. Leo h'uter, incumbent administrator, was.

re-elected by ballot. Following his re-election, Kriz-man told the members that he would continue to lead the art directors in their battle to persuade producers that considerable moviemaking in foreign countries is both needless and extravagant and that a larger proportion of pictures should be filmed in Hollywood. BOB THOMAS One thing leads to another and as a result Mary Martin is treating audiences nightly to one of the most exciting moments in the theater. The moment comes in the first act of Annie Get Your Gun when Annie Oakley makes her big debut with Buffalo Bill's wild west show. The curtains part and there is Mary riding at full gallop on a white charger while shooting targets out of the air.

Television audiences will get to sec the stirring feat on Thanksgiving eve, when Mary will star in Annie on a two-hour spectacular over NBC. FOLLOWING EIGHT MONTHS' RUN in Beverly Hills, Cecil B. De Mille's "The Ten Commandments." moves over to the Hollywood Paramount Theater tomorrow. Above is Anne Baxter who portrays the exotic role of Nefriti ri. She's co-starred with Yul Brynner and Charlton Heston.

NIGHT LETTER By HY GARDNER SCREEN DRAMA MUSIC LEN BOYD Editor VALLEY TIMES, TUESDAY, OCTOBER 22, 1957 They are very old friends. Some additional TIP-OFFS TO THE VALLEY TIMES Coast-to-Coast. Probably no other lop star would undertake such a stunt except Mary, whose devotion to the theater knows no bounds.

And she wouldnt be doing it, except for a string of events. Event No. 1: Mary's husband, Richard Halliday, remembered seeing in his youth Ben Hur, which thrilled audiences with a chariot race on-slagc via treadmills. Event No. 2: The Gilbert Adrians (Janet Gaynor) told the Hal-lidays about the joys of owning a ranch in the Brazilian interior.

So Dick and Mary bought their own ranch nearby. The only way to got around down there was by horse," Mary said backstage before the evening performance at the Philharmonic Auditorium. So we bought nine horses and we pictically lived in the saddle from morning until night. It was the only riding I had done since I was a girl and had my own Shetland pony. Halliday, who was producing Annie with Edwin Lester, went to work on the mechanics.

He in-, spected tile treadmills at the movie studios and found them lacking. The only treadmill that was suitable was one which was actually used in the old "Ben Hur production. It was shipped out here from Ihe East at a tidy figure. I An elaborate mechanism was devised to carry oil the stunt. The treadmill, which had been free-running, had to be equipped with an electric motor to get it started.

Wires were attached to the horse in four places to prevent its getting off tlie track. But still, the device wasn't foolproof. When Mary and co-star John Raitt were posing for photos in San Francisco, the horse reared and sent the expensive talent tumbling on their onto tire stage. Throe homes and two cowboys are required for the stunt. Prince is used for Marys gallop, and White Cloud carries Mary and Raitt for a walk at the finale.
