innovation is not vantages ew of colleges pay much attention to lib eral arts courses or the humani ties Instead they concentrate on ap plied sciences or professions which may contribute to the local econ omy This specialization is bad on ly when viewed from the perspec tive of a diminishing general knowledge The community college seems to be an institution with a future It is strange that many of today's middle aged professors who are aghast at therapid growth of the local college were the brash young idealists of 20 years ago who want ed to revolutionize the education system with emphases on provid ing new opportunities for college attendance An eavesdropper at the Chicago national conference of the Associa tion for Higher Education might have thought he was sitting in on a parent protest meeting instead of a convention of 1800 college teachers and administrators Criticism of the quality of modem education could hardly have been stronger Education at all levels has grown phenomenally in the last decade but one of the principal roadblocks to a dramatic improve ment in the quality of the education a graduate takes with him has been the lack of coordinated goals be tween high school education Such an attitude contributes to the high freshmen drop out rate on college campuses say some high school officials In rebuttal the college instructor can point to ex 8 22 AIL of this World National Guard planes can support our forces de ployed abroad and our allies in amatter of hours must be taken into account by anyone planning to at tack us This has its own deterrent effect and we are of one mind that it is better to deter a war than it is to fight one Citizens whose memories go back some 30 35 years may recall when Guard planes were open cockpit jobs propeller driven and gasoline fueled The primary function of the Guard squadrons of that day was observation and a good part of this was done by eye Now we are advised that a strike force of Air National Guard jet planes has made a non stop flight to Europe in about eight hours re fueling enroute from Air Guard aerial tankers In Europe the planes were assigned to training exercise missions for the Seventh Army The entire deploy ment from bases to Europe and return took just 14 days Aug amples of high school graduates who have been mollycoddled to the point of lacking self discipline Also legion are stories of college freshmen who have to be taught to spell and read before they can con tinue their education Interrupting the professional feud between sec ondary school and college educa tors is the community
