A special material writer is one who fits song and script material to a star's personality or to characters in the show. He pens songs and comedy sketches, weaving them around the principals. Television has brought about quite a resurgence in the demand for this type writer and it is well paid and challenging creative work.

Larry Orenstein, One of the Writers On the Donald O'Connor program is a good example of the new eminence of the special material writer. For years Larry was a top trumpet player with the big name bands. But he had the creative urge and attempted a bit of writing as a sideline. It was Larry who fashioned a very clever commercial for Ohrbaeh's and once he saw and heard his work on the television screen It gave him such satisfaction that he decided to chuck his trumpet and go in for writing in earnest. He caught on with the O'Connor opus and is now making more money than he ever did as a musician.

Six Writers I was Interested to learn that Donald's program employs six writers. and even more interested In finding out how you get six writers to all agree on what is to go into the program. Here's the way its done. Each script takes approximately a week. First order of business is for the other scribblers to sit down with head writers Sid Miller and Hal Finberg and decide upon a story line from three or four different suggested themes.

Once the idea is decided upon the various seribblers each take a segment and put it together. Then at future sessions they all polish the script up together. Time Is Of The Essence The boys may not always agree Imo per cent on the finished script, but time and that old deadline usually preclude any lengthy arguments once the idea has been fully developed. I assume It's a case of majority rule. Orenstein is responsible for the "Sunday in Iowa" segment and the lyrics for the Funk and Wag-rail's skit on tomorrow night's Donald O'Connor program (ERCA at 9:30) and when you see it you'll understand what special material writers contribute, in cage I haven't explained it properly.

There's hardly a big star who plays Las Vegas that doesn't employ a writer to furnish this type material. One of the plush hotels on the Strip actually has one on regular weekly salary to help Its highly paid performers. 1 Orenstein, a mild mannered man, is as enthusiastic about his work as the biggest star. He probably, in his own way, puts as much of himself In It as the most exacting comedian. I do not mind devoting all this apace to him because any guy who will give up a sure thing for a gnmbiesuch as writingdeserves a pat on the back.

May he never need his trumpet again. New Zealand 01 Scientists here are planning a giant marine trap to snare a monster from the ocean depths of Cook Strait. The Northridge Civic Association, a sub group of the West Valley Property Owners Protective Association, has voted unanimously to appeal a recent court decision ruling an ordinance establishing a 785-acre industrial tract in Northridge "constitutional, valid and enforcible." Theodore C. Robinson, vice president of the West Valley association and principal plaintiff in the case, announced the decision to appeal. Richardson, head of the zoology department at Victoria University College, Wellington. "Sworn statements by experienced mariners indicate that there: are at least four types of giantH ocean creatures still unknown to man. Some people call them sea serpents." There are reports, going back to the 1870s of occasional strand-logs along the shores of Cook Strait of giant squid, fearsome creatures with plate-sized eyes, bodies 10 feet across with 10 tentacles up to 25 feet long. With echo soundings taken a few lyears ago, the probable home of these giant squid was charted. This is a canyon connecting the Palliser Bay end of the strait with the Pacific Ocean.

Cook Strait is the turbulent stretch of water between the north and south islands of New Zealand.
