ert "Bumps" Blackwell. Starred in the show is "sis-, ter" Bessie Griffin and she' is surrounded by a talented' cast of Negro entertainers, both singers and dancers who manage to keep the ning a lively oneif a trifle repetitious. The show has played at several night spots in this area as well as Las Vegas, and it is understandably more a club presentation than one that is strictly for the theater. However, the set-up at the La Grande is such that it smacks somewhat of a nightclub, and the overall result could not by any means be termed a failure. There are moments that are impressive in their sheer bombasity, and there are a also many moments that could be more effective if 11 a truly theatrical form of staging was employed in the presentation.

Bessie Griffin sparks the first section of the offering with her rousing renditions of half-dozen or so spirit- uals which are sung in a manner that is reminiscent of the great Mahalia Jack-' son. A troupe of girl sing- ers, "The Gospel Pearls" are vital contributors to this first section and they were particularly well received with their renditions of "Swing Down Sweet Chariot," and "Meeting Tonight." They also provided the background choral work to back up tenor Melvin Carter in "Two Little Fishes," and "The Bosom of Abraham." Star Bessie Griffin gives much to her singing of spiritual songs that might be brought to a more per. tinent focus if she did not lose contact with her listeners by a series of stock gestures. However, she socked across "Eye On The Sparrow" and "I Believe" with the aplomb of a dedicated artist, and the entire company joined her. to finish the first section with "The Whole World's In His Hands." Second part of the show was devoted to a half dozen or so blues and rhythm numbers two of which featured, the Calypso dancing of an amazing young contortionist named Byl Couser.

Miss Griffin and the company closed this part with a sensational arrangement of "Bye Bye" which also pleased the sparse but enthusiastic house. A bongo drummer and a pianist singers and I assume from the slightly uninformative program that they were billed as ''The Fergusons." This is an attraction that is booked into the La Grande for a limited run and it will be interesting to see how it fares with the paying customers. Eddie Foy Signed For 'Show Boat' Eddie Foy has been it engaged to play the role of "Frank Schultz" one of the 1, classic comedy roles in musical comedy repertoire in 4 "Show Boat," I third of the Civic Light Opera presentatio ns opening Au gust 15 in Phil harmonic Auditorium, it is announced Foy today. His role calls for him to be a song and dance man, who to his own dismay is always called upon to be the villain in plays preented on the Show Boat. Joe E.

Brown appears as "Cap'n Julie Wilson as Richard Banke as 'Gaylord Jacquelyn McKeever as Lawrence Winters as Helen Raymond as "Parthy i Ruta Lee as and Virginia Capers as "Queenie." Third Week For 'Elmer' Picture The Burt Lancaster-Richard Brooks production of Sinclair Lewis' best-selling novel, "Elmer Gantry," is in its third record-smashing week at the Hollywood Paramount Theater. The United Artists release, in cokri stars Lancaster and Jean Simmons, with Dean Jagger, Shirley Jones, Patti Page and Arthur Kennedy. MIRIAM HOPK INLS stars in "Look Homeward Angel" now play7 ing nightly at the But-more theater. Revue Is ace Bent Cordon Jenkins, the wiz-1 ard arranger who has revolutionized dance band has brought to the Moulin a Rouge his famed "Manhattan Towers" revue for a limited engagement. This could I very well become the "sleep- I er" booking of the year because of the nostalgic and re- freshing music that is played.

Those who remember the old Perry Como days at the Avalon Ballroom with Ted Williams in command will most certainly get a sentimental thrill of hear. ing the kind of music that made dances pleasurable and pop songs a joy for listening. Two quartets, female, front the band and their blending of "Somebody Loves Me," "Again," "Don't Cry Joe," "Irene," "Bewitched" and many others revived an era that is perhaps on the return. The band, under Jenkins firm hand and with his bewildering arrangements, was perfection in both melody and timing and this reviewer would have loved to dance to each and every rhythm. The two high spots of the show were Frank Sorrelo's renditions of "Sorrento" I and "September Song" and this talented bass-baritone demonstrated that he has a very fine future ahead of him.

Of course, the finale featured the "Manhattan I Tower" number and this made a perfect closing to the program. Don Rice, a comic with a deliberate pitch, opened the show and while his style of humor is Infectious his material is tired. A new crop of Jokes and the elimination of the patriI otic-spiritual finale would assist his act immeasurably. Don Chastaine and the gorgeous Moul in Rouge beauties are interspersed through the P.
