Week in Review For Hollyvood England and the United States are two countries separated by the same language. LYWOODIANA OF THE WEEK: Hollywood is a town where an actress will leave her husband to save her marriage. Its a town where Googie Schwab turned down an offer to make a p.a. with a group of girls, saying, I dont believe in doing for pleasure things I dont like to do. Its a town where Jo! Lansing told me that what she looks for in a man is that he be a gentleman, scholarly and oversexed.

But dont get me wrong. I love Hollywood. FOXW NATIONAL GENERAL CORPORATION Daily 4:45 Sun. 12:45 "THE "THI CHAIRMAN (G) Doily 8:45 T-F-S-S 12:45 "KRAKATO, EAST OF JAVA1 IG) "RING OF RIGHT WATER Gene Baylos says hes disappointed in the Christmas business so far. People that dont expect to pay arent even buying.

READING OF THE WEEK: Heres what they think of some of our, current successful movies in London, ac-cording to the critics of Sight and Sound, a fine English movie magazine. Go odbye, Columbus: Absolutely faithful translation of Philip Roths very funny novella about a young Jews introduction to sex and wealth in the world of the nouveaux riches. Reminiscent of The Graduate in its sidelong humor, but more evenly and self effacingly directed. Easy Rider: Elliptical motorcycle odyssey which builds from an agreeably relaxed travelogue to an appallingly powerful allergory of America today. The beauty of the scenery is sharply contrasted with the ugliness of the people vho inhabit it.

The Wild Bunch: Sam Peckinpahs film about the last battles of a group of gunslingers, hard-bitten survivors of an older West Violent, thoughtful an authoritiative, it keeps Peckinpah out on his own among Western directors of his generation. Midnight Cowboy: John Schlesinger in America with an uneven, jaundiced by radically well-observed story about a would-be hustling cowboy in New York. Excellent performance by Dustin Hoffman as the tubercular victim of the Great Society whom he hitches us. Glenn was supposed to go to Spain to make the western, The Trackers, for and with Sammy Davis, Jr.

Glenn told me: I was getting ready to go to Spain when word was slipped to me that I wouldnt be able to work in the country without an interview by one of Francos men. It seems that when I last made a film in Spain, five or six years ago, on the last day of filming I made a speech to the company, including the Spanish extras, bum rapping the injustices I had seen in the country. When I got back to the hotel there was a message for me to call an official in Francos government. I did. I was supposed to come over to see him immediately for a talk.

Immediately I packed, went to the airport, and returned here. They still remember Ford in Spain. After Glenn got the message, he went to Sammy Davis, Jr. and told him he couldnt make The Trackers in Spain. Within a brief period Sammy got back to Glenn and told him not to worry, they were going to make The Trackers in New Mexico.

This is an example of a film that didnt have to runaway to a foreign country. I dont advocate that Burt Lancaster should get into a jam with Tito but I do think that the Motion Picture Producers Assn, should question every production that wants to runaway and see if the trip is necessary. No sea! of approval from the MP Assn, and no trip! I went to the premiere of Oh! Calcutta! at the Fairfax Theatre. I must be honest: I didn't last the show. It wasnt too nude and the profanity didn't bother me.

It was worse: Oh! Calcutta! is a bore. And when people are boring, clothed or nude, theyre boring period. Oh! Calcutta is a revue without a really amusing sketch or a good song. In fact, if it hadnt been in The Nude, I would have thought Oh! Calcutta was a put on. The show made it from N.Y.

to L.A. Good thing it opened in New York. It never would have made it from L.A. to N.Y. Dally "THI "THI CHAIRMAN IM) TAR RUH CAPRI 1231 Tm Run 785-3154 Daily 4:41 Sat.

Sun. 1:00 "JUSTINE" IR) "STAIRCASE" IK) British Wave Political Career at Peter Ustinov Peter Ustinov, very much like a couple of American actors whose options come up for renewal in next years elections, has been invited to step into politics in England The Liberal Party in the tight lil isle wants him to stand for election as a member of Parliament. If he does Peter will have to live with his own conscience, and with the echo of this observation he once made to me: Abe, my boy, very often the people who make it to the top have no qualifications to detain them at the bottom. Some actors, not urgently required in their own chosen profession, have been gravitating to politics in recent years. Ours must be a more exacting occupation because there doesnt seem to be any reciprocal tendency.

Based on this Usitonovian philosophy which Peter exponded to me only last year, I think the Liberal Party might consider up another tree The articulate and very literate Mr. seems to be urgently required in his own profession, judging by the collection of Oscars and Emmies and other stage, screen and teevee honors he has accumulated. Most stars cringe when they see their old movies cropping up on TVs late, late show but in Pat Boones case, hes grateful Several years ago when 20th Century-Fox was undergoing a complete administrative shake-up, Boone made a modest film With Barbara Eden, written by Rod Serling and released with no fanfare under the title of The Yellow Canary. It was the singers first dramatic role and he turned in a fine performance that was even hailed by Time magazine Boone discovered that producer Dick Ross saw the film on TV recently and thats what gave him the idea to cast Pat in thstarring role in The Cross and the Switchblade, recently completed in New York Pat doesnt sing a note in the film. Henry Macinis concert at the London Palladium drew a star studded audience that included Sean Connery, Albert Finney, Diane Cilento, Vanessa Redgrave and Alan Bates.

Donald O'Connor is renewing his pilots license and he didn't fly for almost 20 years until a few months ago! Rex Harrison has been signed for the title role of Scrooge, musical motion picture version of the Charles Dickens classic, A Christmas Carol, a Waterbury Films, Ltd. production for Cinema Center Films to be produced by Robert Solo and directed by Ronald Neame, with Leslie Bricusse as executive producer announcement was made over the weekend by Jere Henshaw, vice president in charge of production for Cinema Center Films. Harrison, signed by producer Solo, agreed to perform in the starring role when Richard Harris, originally signed for the title role, was unable to meet the production start date for Scrooge due to his starring and directing commitments on Bloomfield, currently filming in Israel. Harrison will report to Shepperton Studios in London at January-end, after completing the run at Londons Lyric Theatre of John Gales stage production of The Lionel Touch. Scrooge will mark the third film musical in which Han rison will star, following his Academy Award-winning performance in My Fair Lady and the title role in Dr.

Dolit-tie He is currently appearing with Richard Burton in the 20th Century-Fox release, The Staircase. The screenplay for Scrooge was written by Briscusse, who also has composed the music and lyrics for the 12 songs to be featured in the picture. SHORT TAKES Itll be home for Christmas and a two-week holiday hiatus for some 100 cast and crew of Joe Levines presentation of The Sporting Club, Avco Embassy film loca-tioning in Hot Springs, Ark. Producer Lee Rich has advised his troupe that, with the cooperation of the guilds and unions, he has arranged to suspend production Dec. 21 through Jan, 4, to enable them to spend the holidays with their families Our congratulations The industry could use a lot more of such consideration! Young Michael Douglas (Kirks boy, that is) has taken a leaf from his dads career.

Mike, who has starred in two picutres for Cinema Center Films, Hail, Hero sod Adam at Six A.M., has formed his own production company, Bigstick Productions, and has purchased The Drift, a Lloyd Kropp novel as his initial screen project. Carol Cole, eldest daughter of the late Nat King Cole, has been tapped by Jules Dassin for a key role in Promise At Dawn which stars Melina Mercouri. Carol has a romantic tete-a-tete with Assaf Dayan, young Israeli star and son of the famed Israeli general. FINAL FAREWELL Liza Minnelli takes reluctant departure from Wendell Burton, in scene from romantic comedy with poignant overtones, The Sterile Cuckoo, Paramount release on exclusive view at the Plaza Westwood.
