S. F. VALLEY TIMES, Friday, Nov. 1969- SUPERLATIVE SCREENFARE U3E WfMhT Vi Mr. NGC Creates Fifth District f- -Ms --vva 'V By NADINE M.

EDWARDS -t In 1939 when James Hiltons celebrated novel was adapted into screen form with Robert Donat and Greer Garson starring, the film was an immediate hit, its appealing warmth spreading a special sort of radiance among all those fortunate enough to see it. Today, 30 years later, this singular charm, this beauty, this eloquence of love, is once again with us. For Goodbye, Mr. Chips has returned, and once again it is a cinematic achievement. Now on exclusive view at Los Angeles first run district manager Harold Wyatt will headquarter in GraumansY Chinese Theater and supervise Hollywood, Beverly Hills, Westwood, Santa Monica and Venice.

District manager John Denman will operate NGCs theaters in Inglewood, Huntington Park, South Bay and Long Beach. His offices will be in the West Coast Theater, Long Beach. Southern California division manager William F. Hertz will continue his headquarters in NGCs home office building. NGC Theaters Corp. has created a new fifth district and appointed a new district manager in its Southern California divisit it has been announced by Nat D. Fellman, Corp.

Gerlach is married and has four children. Fellman also announced that all Southern California district managers would be moved from NGCs Carthay Circle headquarters to new field offices for closer theater supervision. the Fox Wilshire Theater, the MGM release, which is an Arthur P. Jacobs production, has a sort of haloed splendor about it, coming as it does 'midst the sick and the sordid, the prurient and pornographic. For Goodbye, Mr.

Chips is the diamond in the muck; the real jewel in the paste; the slice of sun-splashed sky in the stormy heavens. To noted playwright and dramatist Terence Rattigan goes the credit of adapting the Hilton classic to tire screen, his work proving that mans unselfish love still provides the most rewarding of all entertainment treatises. It Is difficult to Imagine i If jL CoiidCTDB )0 TITLE ROLE Katharine Hepburn stars in Warner Bros. release, Madwoman of Chaillot, on exclusive view at the Pacific Hollywood Theater. Its in color.

CAST ANNOUNCED Man in Glass Booth Arriving at Gallery anyone else in the title role other than Peter OToole on todays screen, that is. For his is a performance that is at once inspired. His portrayal of the shy, dedicated schoolmaster who falls In love with an actress is a dramatic portrait of haunting, humorous and heart-rending depth. A stunning, superb rendition that should win him the Academy Award in 1970. Surprisingly enough, the film has been made into a musical.

And yet, in essence, it is not, for it has none of the earmarks of the musical extravaganza; the kind weve been led to expect. To be sure, there are 12 musical numbers composed by Leslie Bricusse, but they are seemingly incorporated only as a means of heightening the love drama. Sung by OToole and Petula Clark, who delineates the actress, they are played against a backdrop of reverie which blends beautifully with the films charm and poignancy. Somehow, a splashy, sparkly and exuberant musical background would not have been becoming. As the actress who falls in love with the shyly sensitive schoolmaster, Arthur Chipping, whom she immediately christens Mr.

Chips, and for whom she gives up her career, Miss Clark is excellent. A notable singer, she is also an actress of tremendous depth, as her role of Mrs. Chips proves. Pictorially, the film is also an achievement. Filmed against the scenic beauty of rural England and the ruins of Pompeii, it Is breathtaking in its visual splendor.

To Oswald Morris goes credit for this excellent camera work. Also credit to Sir Michael Redgrave, who plays the headmaster; and to Sian Phillips (OTooles wife in real life), who gives a stunning cameo portrait of the brash and brittle actress, Ursula. It is needless to add that Herbert Ross direction is brilliant. Altogether, Goodbye, Mr. Chips is a film of which all involved can be proud.

It is the warmest ray of sunshine the screen has seen this year. films. Among these are Fuzzy Pink Nightgown, No Down Payment," Peyton Place, and Valley Of The Dolls. There are few TV programs of note that have not at one time starred or featured him. Warren Miller, cast as Charlie Cohn, is a seasoned off-Broadway actor with 15 plays to his credit.

On Broadway he appeared in War and Peace, staged by the Association of Producing Artists. Lilyan Chauvin toured with Judith Anderson in Medea and MacBeth and played the leading role of Nonotchka the musical comedy, Silk Stockings, opposite Don Ameche. A distinguished cast, headed by Robert H. Harris, Warren Miller and Lilyan Chauvin, has been assembled by producers Norbert Meisel, Rita Striemer and Michael Lemer for the West Coast premiere of The Man In The Glass Booth by Robert Shaw.
