The Rams sent discontented quarterback Bill Munson, who played out his option behind four other NFL earns' trying to deal for Munson. We realiz that we have gi the Rar: player whj will c'p them this year," Schmidt said.

But we are in rebi'ding program th the accent on younger men. I feel that Bill is taentcd enough to step right into our lineup and stay there for a long time. PAT STUDSTILL QB BILL MUNSON TOMMY WATKINS QB MILT PLUM 4 X. i in 11 1 i season, Allen said. He has led the NFL in punt and kicl rf returns and the Lions second leading ground gainer last season.

All three have the experience and ability to help us win the NFL title in 1968, Allen said. Munson came to the Rams from Utah State in 1963 and was named to the NFL all-rookie am after a season which he threw for 1,533 yards and nine touchdowns. He started two sear for Los Angeles and has a lifetime mark of 287 completions in 550 attempts for a .552 percentage. Munson gained 1,701 yards passing 1965, including 10 touchdown passes, but an injury cost him his job. Munson, soon to be 27, missed the final four games of 1965 due to a knee injury and a seige of lllnes at the start of training camp the following sc on and again in mid-year gave Gabriel the job.

They dropped out of a tie for third place all the way down to sixth in the National League when they got scalped, 7-3, Wednesday night by the Atlanta Braves. The Dodgers looked pretty good for a few minutes after they tied nun I mm Thursday, May 2, 1968 12 Ride Roman Gabriel last season, along with a thud round draft choice to the Lions Wednesday in exchange for flanker Pat Studstill, halfback Tommy Watkins, quarterback Milt Plum plus Detroits No. 1 draft choice in 1969. It was the second major deal between the two clubs in less than a year.

At the close of training camp last fall, the Lions dealt All-Pro defensive tackle Roger to the Rams for three draft choices. The Lions had been after Munson ever since last year, and reportedly were close to consumating a deal prior to the combined draft of college players by the National and American Football leagues this year. Fell Flat The Lions passing fell flat last season, producing only 1,826 yards of a 2,752 season the previous year. Head coach Joe Schmidt was unhappy with his signal callers Plum and second-year man Karl Sweetan. We had to give up a lot to get him, Schmidt said.

But I definitely felt that we needed a new quarterback and in my book, Munson was the best one available. Detroit drafted quarterback Greg Landry of Massachusetts as their No. 1 pick this year but Schmidt was allegedly unhappy over the choice. Los Angeles has been within a couple of games of making the Super Bowl the past two seasons, last year compiling a beter record than the pro football champio Green Bay Packers but under the new divisional setup tvey were nosed out in the playoff game. Rams head coach George Allen said Studstill, a flanker who is one of the top punters in the NFL but missed seven games last season with a pulled hamstring muscle, was the key man in the tr: Hes a treir.en competitor and a ver tile athlete," Allen raid Studstill, who will be 30 this June.

Studstill caught 6 7 passes two seasons ago for 1,266 yards. He came to Detroit as a free agent from Houston in 1961. Exact Type Plum is the exact type of quarterback to fit into our organization. Wat'-ns, 39, another seven-year veteran, will be used primarily on offense next Maor League Linescores 1 4, 1 iVi 'V i Soccers Success Story A year ago, two professional soccer sides suddenly showed up in the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. Somehow, despite the thousands of transplanted people, the sport never quite caught the eye of the paying public. Oh, sure, soccer had its moments. Like the night Benficas great Eusebio put on a one-man show but fell short of beating the great Manchester United side. More than 15,000 people went home saying they would be back.

Yet, three days later when the Toros the National Professional Soccer League entered the Coliseum turf, less than 2,000 people and most of those had free tickets kept their promise and gave the sport another look. By mid-August, however, the people did start to come back to the Coliseum, that hunk of cement in dire need of paint just south of University of Southern California. Jack Kent Cookes Los Angeles Wolves were playing the Washington D.C. Whips for the championship of the Lmted Soccer Association. This was the league with the good guys, the league playing with full blessing of the world football association.

You people bent on correct titles would know the group as FIFA. That game had everything and paying customers to go along with it. The Wolves won the game in double overtime, 6-5, because one of the Washington fullbacks accidentally headed the ball into his own goal. Sort of too bad since if that hadnt happened the game might still be going and the Coliseum might still offer professional soccer. L.A.

Team Now In Pasadena As it stands now, just one professional soccer team plays for the metropolis of Los Angeles and they do so at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena. Cooke, who built a Forum for his basketball Lakers and his hockey Kings, felt it best to put his Wolves in the town where the roses always bloom Jan. 1, ram or shine. The Toros, favored by dozens of fans last summer, have departed for San Diego. Despite these moves, however, the soccer war is over.

Seventeen teams, representing both the NPSL and the USA, have been merged into one happy family. Its called the North American Soccer League and there are Eastern and Western Conferences divided even urther into divisions. The Eastern Conference is comprised of the Atlantic and Lakes Divisions. Atlantic members are the Atlanta Chiefs, New York Generals, Washington Whips, Baltimore Bays and Boston Beacons. Making up the Lakes Division are the Detroit Cougars, Chicago Mustangs, Cleveland Stokers and Toronto Falcons.

In the Western Conference, the divisions are Pacific and Gulf. The Western Conference members, by division, of course: Pacific Los Angeles Wolves, San Diego Toros, Oakland Clippers, Vancouver Royals. Gulf Houston Stars, Kansas City Spurs, St. Louis Stars, Dallas Tornados. Wolves Appear To Be Good With all these awesome athletic powers it might seem strange that Cookes side would be the dominating power.

But that, my friends, is the whole truth. In four games thus far, two at the Rose Bowl and two on the road in the eastern part of the United States, the Wolves have yet to taste defeat. Their record is 3 0-1, with 10 goals scored and four against. Not bad for a team that had not even been formed eight weeks ago. Much of the success must be handed to Ray Wood, former Manchester United goalie, who has welded this team together, first at the teams initial training camp at Leeds, England, and now at the local camp at Darby Park in Inglewood.

Youll be amazed at the Wolves. So amazed youll probably be in the Rose Bowl next Wednesday night, May 8, when the Wolves next take to their local pitch to battle the Chicago Mustangs. BOSTON (UPI) The California Angels couldnt put together two straight victories for the first three weeks of the season but currently theyre riding a four-game winning streak. And the pitcher who started the win streak, Sammy Ellis, with a 4-3 victory over Oakland Sunday at Anaheim, tonight tries for his second straight victory and hopes to make it five in a row for the Angels against the Red Sox. Ellis will be opposed at Fenway Park by Jose Santiago, who has a 2-0 mark.

Ellis is 1-2 and had been relegated to the bullpen until the Angels ran into a shortage of starting pichters and he was called to open Sunday. Following Ellis win at home Sunday Jim McGIothlin and George Brunet each hurled wins over the Cleveland Indians. The Angels almost chucked away Wednesday nights 5-3 victory over Boston when starter Rick Clarks error and wildness permitted the Red Sox to tie the score 3-3 in the eighth. Manager Bill Rigney summoned Tom Burgmeier from the bullpen but he was ineffective and the Angels skipper then called on Jack Hamilton to put out the fire. The Angels scored two runs in the sixth off Gary Waslewski on Jim Fregosis smgle, a walk, a single by Jimmy Hall and Chuck Hintons sacrifice fly.

Hinton also drove his second run in the eighth on a fielders choice after a walk and Bubba Mortons single. the score in the bottom of the eighth at 3-3 with two runs. Zoilo Versalles singled, Willie Davis belted a triple that scored Zoilo and Willie came home on Ron Fairlys sacrifice fly. Davis accounted for the first Dodger run with a third-inning homer, his third of the year. War Dance But the Braves did a war dance on the base-paths in the top of the ninth.

Pinch-hitter Mike Lum led off with a single off Jim Grant, the third Dodger pitcher. Felipe Alou singled and Grant gave way to John Billmgham. Sonny Jackson was safe on a fielders choice that eliminated Aiou and Hank Aaron was given an intentional pass to load the bases. Tito Francona hit a sharp grounder to second baseman Paul Popvich and beat it out as Lum scored the go-ahead run. It was the thud RBI of the night for Francona who singled to diive in Alou and Jackson with the first two Brave runs off starter Don Drysdale in his first inning.

Drysdale left the game after seven innings with the Dodgers trailing, 2-1. In the eighth, the Braves made it 3-1 on successive singles off Jim Brewer by Francona, Tommie Aaron and Clete Boyer. Willie Shines Davis was the best Dodger hitter, getting three for four. Catcher Tom Haller, who was bruised in a tag-out collision at the plate with Hank Aaron in the first inning, got two singles in four trips. In the seventh, Haller backed Aaron up against the fence in right field with a blow that missed being a homer by only a few feet.

Haller, nursing a battered left knee and a bruised right shm, will be given a rest tonight in the second and final game of the series. Manager Walt Alston named Jeff Torborg to start behind the plate in a shake-up lineup featuring right handed hitters against the scheduled Atlanta starter, Dick Kelley, a southpaw with a 1-2 record. Claude Osteen, 1-4, and Davis will be the only lefty batters. Bob Bailey returns for another crack at third base and Louis Aicaraz moves to second. Rocky Colavito will start in left field with Ted Savage right.

They replace lefties Jim Fairey and Ron Fairly. Wes Parker, switcheroo, remains at first.
