8 S. F. VALLEY TIMES, Tuesday, Aug. 5, 1969 AT THE GREEK SltellaU (jncJiam Belafontes Back; His Fans Love Him iv ut Fisher Sets Out to See Connie i loyal fans. Theyre around the world, bound together by the Belafonte Syndrome.

Southern Californians especially are said to be among his most intense, dating back to his initial Greek Theatre appearance in 1955 as a relative beginner. Belafonte and the Greek Theatre Assn, have maintained a profoundly unusual relationship unique in the sometimes tenuous world of show business for they have combined their talents and capabilities for 15 years, bringing the Belafonte magic to literally thousands of Southern California fans. Since his first appearance on the Greek stage he has returned every other year. 1969 finds him back, once again, behind the theatres glowing footlights. This years show is billed as "all-new with the addenda that there are still enough classic Belafonte favorites to appease his fans.

The cast includes some bright new talents, all his discoveiies, singers Patti Austin and Hedge and Donna. As the Tuesday afternoon rehearsal progressed, the awaited moment approached. Belafonte walked toward the orchestra. All whispering ceased. The musicians instruments rose.

A voice was soon heard as the words of Suzanne poured out from a soul not a tormented soul but one carrying the wisdom of living and knowing. A gentle breeze stirred and the oppressive heat disappeared. Belafonte was back. LONDON Connie Stevens arrived in London with 28 pieces of baggage, her two small children, her sister and a Scotch nurse. Eddie Fisher is planning to fly over from the states, to visit her.

But it doesnt mean a reconciliation. Paul Burke at the White Elephant, was lunching with Carol Poor Cow White. Paul, whom I first saw in the Naked City and 12 OClock High TV series, and last the film version of Valley of the Dolls, told me he had come over For A Holiday, as we say of vacations in England, from the Phillipines where he starred in a native-made film, Mahalika. I forgot to ask what it means. Someone rushed by with the news that it looks like a get together with Barbara Rush and public relations expert Warren Cowan.

I hope so. They bought my house in Beverly Hills when they were first married and for many years it was a happy house. When they first broke up because of Barbaras interest in another man, I said to her jokingly, will you sell it back to me. It was a warm afternoon in Los Angeles. Slightly cooler in Griffith Park than for most of the city, but in the basement of the Greek Theatre the temperature hovered close to 100 degrees.

The Greek Theatre orchestra was assembled and their refrains cut through the heat, circulating around the park. Seated in front of the band was a group of technicians, stage managers, staff members, and to their right a lone figure. Although surrounded he was obviously alone listening intently to the cadence and tone of the orchestra. Eyes darted his way frequently, but he didnt see them. Not at that particular moment.

His attention was singular. A mellow hum could be heard now and then as the group waited. Waiting for the moment he would sing during the wilting afternoon rehearsal. The man was Harry Belafonte. The Greek Theatre favorite now making his ninth appearance on the Greek stage.

And it was apparent on the faces of the cloistered group in the basement that he still has it the warm, husky voice, the gentle prose, the rugged good looks all adding up to compound the highly respected Belafonte magic. They felt the magic that rehearsal day even when the voice was quiet and their listening carried the silent strains of respect. Belafonte, it has been said, has collected thousands of Zubin Mehta Opens Bowl Series Tonight Zubin Mehta, music director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, conducts the first of six concerts he will conduct in Hollywood Bowl this season, tonight at 8:30. Mehta will conduct the orchestra in the Overture to Mozart; and Richard Strauss Domestic Symphony. Daniel Barenboim, who conducted the orchestra in the Bowl last summer, returns as soloist, playing the Brahms Piano Concerto No.

2 in flat major. Not a chance, she replied crisply. Of course the price has doubled since I sold it. Mike Mindlin at The Elephant had just got in from Russia at this restaurant people are always just coming in or going out. He had gone there, he told me, to film an hour special for TV with Sophia Loren chatting to Russian writers and arsts.

Mastroainni had to leave for the Ukraine with my ex-Daily Mirror Editor Justin Gilbert in charge, so we only got fifteen minutes of film. It will still be seen on American television. I should have listened to Justin when he told me Sophia would not be taking her baby son to Russia. Instead, I believed a story in a London newspaper quoting Sophia as saying she could not bear to be parted from her child and he was going to Russia to work with her in the film. Little Carlo will be in the film, but not until the production goes to Italy.

She is too good a mother to subject him to changes of climate, water and food. Next time Ill believe Justin. Pony-tails for men? Marlon Brando spotted at a London gathering wore his hair tied with a rubber band at the top of his head. And talking of hair, Yul Brynners 22-year-old son, Roc, is a ringer for his old man except Yul has no hair and Roc wears his almost shoulder length. Young Bryn-ner has translated God Father Jean Cocteaus Opium into English and adapted it for a play which will be seen very soon in Irleand.

Im lunching with Roc, whom I knew when he was a baby, in a day or so in London. Mia Farrow recently spotted at the San Lorenzo restaurant in Beauchamp (pronounced beecham) place with the man who hopes to be her second husband Andre. Previn, of course. JUST IN TIME Arthur Hill destroys a death tape just in time, in scene from suspense film, The Chairman, Gregory Peck starrer at the Vogue Hollywood. Film is from 20th Century-Fox.
