He has known and worked with all the greats of the theatrical world, including George M.

Cohan, David Belasco and David Warfield. He spent 19 months overseas during World War I and received the Distinguished Service Cross and went back overseas during World War II to play Front Page for the troops, with his wife, actress Edna Eustace Helton. He is a member of the Jesterate, the governing board of the Masquers Club as well as chairman of the luncheon committee, where actors lambaste and rib their fellow actor guest of honor. Today he is chairmaning one for comedian George Riley, which Joe Quinn will emcee. Hes very amiable about autographs, especially with children, and if you want to see him, chances are hell be at the Masquers nightly applauding his wife, Edna, who opens March 18 in the Masquers production of Merton Of The Movies.

He and Edna share a beautiful apartment in Hollywood with one room devoted to his memorabilia of the theatre with autographed pictures of virtually every famed actor and actress of the pa9t half century lining the walls. Hes the last of the leprechauns who has found his pot of gold in a busy career, good health, a lovely and devoted wife who is his biggest fan, and many friends throughout the world. In fact, there is a comedian in Japan who mimics his distinctive voice and draws applause instantaneously. His voice and face are known to millions and he loves them all, because old whats-his-name is not really that mean little son of a gun that you just know is going to sell guns to the Indians or salt a mine hes just a darlin leprechaun! Cold Shoulder In olden times, when someone lost favor with his host he was given the cold shoulder of mutton while the rest of the guests were served hot roast beef. This led to the expression, to give one the cold shoulder.

Fairouz Blab School A blab school, mentioned in one of the biographies of Abraham Lincoln, was an elementary school, usually with several grades in a single room, in which pupils studied aloud and recited in unison. Hes the last of the leprechauns. In motion pictures and television hes that mean little son of a gun. In the Lambs Club of New York and the Masquers Club of Hollywood, hes that wonderful guy and when hes recognized immediately on the street by fans hes, Oh, gosh, whats his name? Hes Percy Helton! There, now you know his name! And with St. Patricks Day approaching tJs only fitting we tell you about Percy who started in the theater over 70 years ago at the age of 2 years and 11 months in vaudeville with his father, the great Alf Helton.

Who spent 50 years on the Broadway stage before coming to Hollywood to appear in over 150 films. Without him The Miracle on 34th Street would not have grown into a story remember? He was the drunken Santa Claus! His first vaudeville appearance was at Tony Pastors in New York and while working on Funny Girl he appeared in a replica of the famed music hall and Barbra Streisand insisted on having his picture taken outside the duplicated set! Pearl Bailey insisted he come up on stage during her New York appearance in "Hello Dolly so she could tell him how much she enjoyed his work and after extolling him, pleaded, Now, for Gods sake, tell me your name! Hes one of the few people who received a flattering introduction from insult comic Don Rickies in Las Vegas. They had shot a TV pilot together. When Rickies told the audience how wonderful Percy was and what a pleasure it was knowing Percy and asked him to stand up and take a bow, the leprechaun broke up the house and Rickies by solemly turning to the audience and deadpanning, Ive never seen that man in my life! Some of his best known films are Hazard, Larceny, The Set-up, Criss-Cross, Copper Canyon, Crooked Way, Wicked Woman, Call Me Madam, The Robe, Ride The High Country, Music Man, Wheeler Dealers, Four For Texas, Hush, Hush, Sweet Charlotte, Sons of Katie Elder and Funny Girl. (F) BELLE DE JOUR: Spanish director Luis Bunuels story of a young, respectable housewife who spends her afternoons in a brothel.

(AO) CITARLY: Oiff Robertson is superb as Charly Gordon, a mental defective who is just smart enough to know that he is dumb, and attempts to correct his condition through surgery. Co-stars Claire Bloom. (MA) CIIITTY CHITTY BANG BANG: A great big package of Disney-type fun and games that features Dick Van Dyke as an eccentric inventor who huffs and puffs along in his magical automobile. Unfortunately, the picture huffs and puffs as well when it should be chugging along. Also features Sally Ann Howes, Lionel Jeffries.

(F) FACES: John Cassavetes offers a concerned and disturbing study of the deterioration of the modem American marriage in this remarkable film. His cast, whose principal members were largely unknown, give excellent performances that seem spontaneous and improvised. Stars John Marley, Lynne Carlin. Gena Rowlands. (MA) FUNNY GIRL: Barbra Streisand sings, dances and clowns her way into superstardom in this musical biography of the late Fanny Brice.

(F) HELL IN THE PACIFIC: A taut, riveting story of two enemy soldiers marooned on a desert island who engage in physical battle, a battle of wits, peaceful coexistence ana finally collaboration. Costars Jason Robards, James Fox. (3IA) JOANNA: Film which casts a callow young person adrift amongst the treacherous shoals of mod, swinging London. Painfully honest, but is something that has already been done before, and much better. Stars Genevieve Waite, Glenna Forster-Jones, Donald Sutherland. (MA) LONESOME COWBOYS: The Arizona territory and the American western may never be quite the same now that Andy Warhol has invaded both with his outrageous parody.

(AO) 3IAYERLING: Handsome remake of the Charles Boyer-Danielle Darrieux classic telling; of the tragic love affair between Crown Prince Rudolf, heir to the House of Hapsburg, and his young mistress. Stars Omar Sharif, Catherine Deneuve, James Mason, Ava Gardner. (MA) OLIVER: A thoroughly enjoyable music remake of the Dickens classic with Ron Moody, as Fagin, giving a great Eerformance. Shani Wallis, Oliver Reed, Jack Wild and Mark ester are not too far behind him. (F) PENDULUM: Well-performed, fast-paced and thought-provoking message movie asks and answers serious questions as to how far the Supreme Court should go in upholding the rights of criminals.

Stars George Peppard, Jean Seburg, Richard Kiley. (MA) PLAY DIRTY: Familiar World War II action stoty with the good officer leading his not-so-good battalion of misfits and criminal psychopaths on a suicide mission behind enemy lines. Stars Michael Caine, Nigel Davenport, Nigel Green. (MA) RACHEL, RACHEL: Paul Newmans first attempt as a Sroducer-director is a deeply moving and poetic success with oanne Woodward as a 35-year-old spinster school teacher who comes to grips with the fundamentals of the human condition. (MA) R03IEO AND JULIET: Franco Zeffirellis version of the Shakespeare tragedy handles the solemn subject in a fresh and unique way, aided by the youthful costars Leopard Whiting and Olivia Hussey.

(F) SECRET CERE3IONY: One more sick way of looking at sick people is the theme in his hailstorm of cryptic imagery. Stars Mia Farrow, Elizabeth Taylor, Robert Mitchum. (AO) SIIA3IE: A terrifying picture of war and its effects from Ingmar Bergman as he tells of a couples attempt to escape the ominous gloom of impending disaster. A masterpiece. Stars Max Von Sydow and Liv Ullman- (MA) STAR: This filmed biography of British song star Gertrude Lawrence fails despite many plusses, including elegant setting, nice arrangements and Julie Andrews in the title role.

Costars Daniel Massey, Richard Crenna, Beryl Reid. (F) STOLEN KISSES: Francois Truffauts warmly enjoyable and honestly gentle film about a young man who is engaged in the universal preoccupation of all young men: wooing and winning the young ladies. Stars Jean-Pierre Leaud, Claude Jade, Delphine Seyrig. (MA) THE BOSTON STRANGLER: Tony Curtis gives a splendid portrayal of the alleged strangler of 12 women in this engrossing yet responsible picture that attempts to deal with violence without capitalizing on it. Costars Henry Fonda, George Kennedy.

(AO) THE BROTHERHOOD: Kirk Douglas gives a superb performance in this suspenseful, brutal study of the Mafia, with the action centering on Douglas as a top-ranking mafioso who lives by the old Sicilian code, and is unable to keep up with the Space Age. Costars Luther Adler, Alex Cord, Irene Pappas, Susan Strasberg. (MA) THE FIXER: Under the heavy hand of John Frankenheimer, Bernard Malamuds harrowing and inspiring story of a Jew in anti-Semitic Russia at the turn of the century is transformed into a long, solemn and grislv studv of mans inhumanity to man. Stars Alan Bates and Dirk Bogarde. (MA) THE GRADUATE: Mike Nichols proves once again that he is a master of the motion picture form in this marvelous amalgamation of comedy and black comedy revolving around a young mans discovery of life and its many pleasures.

Stars Dustin Hoffman, Anne Bancroft, Katharine Ross. (AO) THE HEART IS A LONELY HUNTER: Carson McCullers sensitive novel about the loneliness of a deaf mute and his struggle to survive in the world of the inanely talky. Brilliant performances from Alan Arkin, Chuck McCann and Sondra Locke. (MA) THE KILLING OF SISTER GEORGE: An expertly executed film giving a frank and honest study of Lesbian relationship, but perhaps director Robert Aldrich has opened our eyes too fast. Stars Beryl Reid, Susannah York, Coral Browne.

(AO) THE LION IN WINTER: An excellent historical drama giving Peter OToole the performance of his career as the sly, impertinent King Henry II and offering Katharine Hepburn a role which far more demanding and immeasurably more interesting than her Academy Award winner of a year ago. (MA) THE MAGUS: A thoroughly confusing story that becomes another in the long line of pictures to play the truth-illusion game and to lose. Stars Michael Caine, Anthony Quinn, Candice Bergen. (MA) THE SHOES OF THE FISHER3IAN: Multimillion-dollar blockbuster based on the Morris West story of the Papacy has all the physical grandeur worthy of it, as well as a fascinating premise and a fine performance from Anthony Quinn, but it is severely bogged down with a stodgy, diffuse script, pedestrian direction and a subplot which is uncalled for. (F) THE SUBJECT WAS ROSES: A triumphant return to the screen for Patricia Neal in this filmed adaptation of the Frank Gilroy Pulitzer Prize winner- Co-stars Jack Albertson, Martin Sheen.

(MA) THREE IN THE ATTIC: Christopher Jones as Paxton Quigley, the campus playboy who becomes the victim of an evil scheme by his girl firends. A disturbing, provocative fright film costarring Yvette Mimieux, Judy Pace. (MA) 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY: Stanley Kubricks fascinating venture into the realm of science-fiction lacks plot, but toe superb special effects will keep toe rabid sci-fi fan more than interested throughout. Stars Keir Dullea, Gary Lockwood. (F) WEEKEND: A nauseating sermonetle from Jean-Luch Godard that decribes our society as sick and decayed, and predicts a violent revolution.

(AO) YELLOW SUB3IARINE: The Beatles sing and clown their way through this marvelous display of animation.
