Va. (UP) An outbreak of infantile paralysis in the greater Wheeling area boosted the total cases to 56 in city hospitals today and additional iron lungs were shipped in to handle the burden. A polio patient admitted last night to Ohio Valley Hospital brought the total there to 40 positive and three suspected cases.

Wheeling Hospital authorities said they were treating 16 positive and two suspected infantile paralysis victims. The hospitals received five additional iron lungs over the weekend. Calif. (UP) Elder statesman Bernard Si. Baruch celebrated his 82nd birthday in the heart of a redwood forest thousands of years old today and said America will stand "in-destruotahle till the end of time." The silver-haired adviser to presidents said in a prepared statement beneath the world's largest tree that in such a setting a man could be hopeful "that the dream of America a dream of peace, and plenty with equality of oppor tunity will come true. "No matter what dread attacks may come," he, said, "America will stand, sheltering, inspiring, indestructible till the end of time." Baruch addressed officials of the Redwood Empire Association, Gov. Earl Warren of California, and other dignitaries who had come to dedicate a redwood "Birthday Bench" beneath the giant, 364-foot tree to the park-bench philosopher.

Axton Held For Trial; Charge Against Detrick Ignored By Grand Jury James Axton, Charleroi. was held for trial in the fatal shooting of Arch Slmms at Charleroi July 15 by the Grand Jury on Fiday. The Grand Jury ignored the charge against Ralph H. Detrick, Bcallsville, who beat to death John Trobich for attemtping to molest Detrick's four-year-old daughter. Axton and Simms had been friends but on the night of the fatality they had quarreled.

Simms died of a head injury which was believed to be inflicted with a brick. Judge Roy I. Carson excused the Grand Jury after completion of its work for the August term of Gi-iminal Court. U.S. To Transfer Costello To Lewisburg WASHINGTON (UP) The Justice Department announced that New York gambler Frank Costello, who began an 18-month jail term last Friday for contempt of the Senate, will be transferred to the Federal penitentiary in Lewisburg, some time this week.

ATLANTIC FLEET NROTC Midshipman third class, Noel W. Spencer, son of Noel W. Spencer of 435 North Alexander Monongahela, a student at the University of Utah, is among the 80 Naval Reserve midshipman embarked in the destroyer USS Meale, in a ten-ship squadron which sailed recently for a summer training cruise in European waters. The task group is headed first for Antwerp, Belgium, where the midshipmen and crew will take 1 tours to Amsterdam and The Hague. Other ports of call will be Lisbon, Portugal, and Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

The cruise is designed for Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps midshipmen from 24 colleges and universities throughout the nation, and will stress shipboard navigation, gunnery, communications, and tactics to sup-olement shoreside classroom studies. Uniontown Teenagers Win VFW State Crown HARRISBURG (UP) Union-town's Teener baseball team knocked out of the running two years in a row, finally got to know how it feels to sit on the state title throne. The Western Pennsylvania boys came through Saturday when they toppled the Harrisburg Millers 4 0 to take the Pennsylvania State Veterans of Foreign Wars Teen-cr Baseball League championship. It was the dependable pitching arm of Harry Holbrook that figured most in the victory. Holbrook held the local nine to only three hits while striking out 11 batters.

At no time was his lead in danger. Third and fourth place in the annual tourney of all-star 13 to 15 year olds went to mifflin County and Chester. Ralph Byrd, Veteran Screen Actor, Dies TARZANA, Calif, (UP) Veteran actor Ralph Byrd, who appeared in "Guadalcanal Diary" and "A Yank in the RAF" and played the film role of Dick Tracy, died yesterday of a heart attack. He was 43. Born in Dayton.

Byrd served in the Army Air Corps during World War II. Survivors are his widow, former actress Virginia Carroll, and their daughter, Carol, 13.
