W. H. Smith, assistant chief of the division of forest protection of the Forests and Waters Department, told a newsman that normally the division would not have been brought to maximum strength until later this month. "But the threat of forest fires brought about by the dry spell necessitated alerting the men ahead of schedule," he added. Although rain has fallen in some sections of the state, Smith said, the forests "still are dry and fires easily could get started." "Now that we have reached maximum strength we are prepared to handle any situation within reason," he declared.

The real danger in the forests will begin when the leaves start to fall and will continue until the first snowfall. Smith warned. WHITEHEAD Funeral service for Edward D. Whitehead of 6 Allan Lane, Colllngswood, will be held Monday at 11 A. M.

By ADA SELL An evening of solid enjoyment of the drama is assured to all who attend the first play of the season offered by the Altoona Community Theatre, in cooperation with the Park and Recreation Board. An enthusiastic crowd thrilled and roared alternately at the first nisht, Friday evening at the Mishler theatre. The play will also be presented again Saturday nifiht when there will be in all probability a much larger audience, with less competition in the field of sports. If but one bouquet of orchids were to be given to one member of the excellent cast of this play, it would land in the lap of Eleanor Maurer. She played the part of Belinda l'ryde, spinster owner of the Old Colonial "Ramshackle" Inn.

Her running chatter on all subjects, her ineffectual hurrying about, her sudden and unexpected murder of the hated Mr. Temple all so charmingly portrayed, were eagerly watched for by the audience. Eleanor Maurer had formerly directed some of the ACT plays herself, and in addition to her own fine skill of acting was the superb job of directing by M. Patricia Pyuen, everywhere in evidence. Orchids to you, Madame Pyuen! S.

Carlton Ayers who last season directed "Rebecca" of the ACT repertoire, did a marvelous piece of acting as the fussy old Commodore Lucius Towser who supplied "business acumen'' to supplement Belinda's money, and after 20 years did not "pop the question" to the Belinda Pryde. Lee Miller as Patton was like a character out of a novel by Charles Dickens, he would easily shine in an "Oliver Twist" presentation. Fine work, Lee! Harriet Schulman as Mame Philips was perfectly cast and her acting was Marge Griffiths as Mary Temple was the sweet little sweetheart she was cut out to be in "Ramshackle Inn." Jim Gates as Constable Small performed very satisfactorily as an arm of the law. The whole action consumed only a little more than an hour of the story of the play, and the scenes were so successively gruesome and laughable that almost every taste of theatregoers is sure to be sated. Gladys Hiester was production manager, Bob Reese chairman of construction, Fred Counsel's Art class had charge of painting and decorative eltcuts.

Margaret Atty and Edith Alamprese took care of large properties, and John Burget and Barbara Stewart Smith of make-up. Costumes were attended by Mrs. J. W. Wolfinger and Barbara Drass.

Publicity co-ordinator was S. Carlton Ayers. Margaret Atty headed the ushers and the pro gram was the responsibility of Bertha McKinstry. K. of C.

Planning Birthday Party The Altoona Council of the Knights of Columbus are making plans for the first birthday party of the new fiscal year. Jack has had a great amount of experience in the food business so all are assured of the very finest food.

For the first party an extra special menu has been outlined by Jack. John Nardella will be handling all tickets for this first party. Members that are not contacted may purchase tickets at the rooms or at the door the evening of the party. The committee has chosen Tuesday evening, Oct. 13 for the lidlifter.

The committee assures all that there will be an abundance of good things to eat and a very enjoyable evening's entertainment. Val Rouzer To Receive Gold Progress Award Altoona's police chief, Vaul E. Rouzer, will receive the gold seal of progress award of the Mission, Chamber of Commerce, according to announcement Friday by Mayor Walter H. Grove. The Altoona C.

of C. submitted the local official's name. The gold seal goes annually to one police chief in each state for outstanding achievements and record as a law enforcement officer. Chief Rouzer received the award for his leadership in police and civil defense training schools, his promotion of police organizations in the state, his drafting of programs for the parking meter system and the school guards, and his leadership of the police force in a city which has a low crime rate.
