I spent a couple of fleeting hours at the Kings Arms the other afternoon chatting with Harry Owens and, when it was all over, I came to the conclusion that the reason Harry's KNXT program is so very, very authentic is because this boy THINKS Polynesian.

You look at Harry and you vote him the znan most unlikely to be making a living in the presenta-, tion of a Hawaiian TV show. He rnight be a doctor. Or maybe a lawyer, which is indeed what he started out to be. But you talk to him, listen to him, and it's a different kettle of fish. His love of the Polynesian comes out in everything he says and he has plenty to say.

Owens just returned from a 10- week dream vacation in the South Pacific. He covered 15,000 miles In making the trip to Papeete on the Island of Tahiti via Honolulu, In compaw with his 15-year-old son Butch ad a cameraman he also visited Samoa and Fiji. The vacationers occupied the traditional grass shack on one of the Tahiti beaches. No electricity, auto horns or telephones. No newspapers.

They visited neighboring Isles via "pig boats," formerly used to transport cattle. Harry told me that the Fiji islanders, who would gladly have made a meal out of you and me some years ago, have now developed into the most gentle of people. 'WM In the islands Owens shot 11,000 'feet of color film at Tahiti, Bora Bora, Fiji and Samoa. We'll be seeing it (in black and white) on his new series which gets under way tomorrow night at 7:30 on Channel 2. I learned that he spends 50 hours a week working on the Harry Owens show in his office, a converted shack on the grounds of his Pacific Palisades home.

He orchestrates all the music, writes the tunes, writes the scriptand even times it before turning it in to KNXT each week. Perhaps you didn't know it but about 75 per cent of all Hawaiian music played in the U.S. today is the work of Owens. Tops on his personal Hit Parade are 'Sweet Leilani," "The Hawaiian War Chant," "Lei Aloha," and "O'Brien's Gone Hawaiian."
