Peppard Files Cross Suit Against Studio Film star George Peppard has filed a cross complaint in Los Angeles Superior Court against Paramount Pictures Corp.

alleging breach of the studios contract with the actor and asking damages of $425,000. Peppard alleged that Paramount had loaned him to Pendennis Productions, Embassy Pictures and Film Finances, producers and financiers of the motion picture, Sands of Kahhari, despite the fact that the Paramount contract specified he could be loaned only to a production company or companies 100 per cent financed by Paramount. Peppard contends that Sands of Kahhari is financed in all or in part by companies other than Paramount and that he reparted for production in the erroneous belief that Paramount had financed the picture completely according to the terms of his contract. Last April 7. Paramount filed an action against Peppard for breach of contract and for damages of 54, the major portion of which ($575,000) represents the difference between Peppards Paramount salary of $425,000 for two pictures and which Paramount states is Peppards current alue as a star of two films.

PAY ed official notification from Levine and his la-leasing studio, Paramount, that they possess clear-cut legal rights. The cannonading that could erupt at any moment was hinted at by-Sargent in an interview. He declared: I have been threatened and blackmailed, but my picture will go out and on schedule. Sargents reference to "on schedule" raises what could prove the most important and damaging issue of all for the Levine project. Sargent advertises that through a speed-up video-tape process, his Harlow will be ready for release May 12 and that 1,131 exhibitors have already requested booking.

This is the same method by which Richard Burton was presented in "Hamlet" so successfully a few months ago. Sargent claims incidentally, that his was the only one of 13 versions of the Shakespearean classic that ever made money. Levine and Paramount admittedly cannot get their $2 million-plus extravaganza before the public until next winter. Nor do they intend to move faster. HOWEVER, it was not until Sargent went for the pink play that Levine really flared up.

The promotion-minded producer who in successive movies, capped by "The Carpetbaggers," has been attempting to establish Car-roll Baker as the new Hollywood symbol of sex, had been carefully and methodically resorting to pink hues in exploiting her as the image of Jean Harlow. She has been wearing pink gowns in personal appearances. She rode an oid pink Rolls Royce to a champagne breakfast to signal the start of the operation a few weeks ago. All of Levins ad displays have been treated to the boudoir touch in various shades of pink. Levine's campaign of allurement had slipped into smooth high gear.

Showman and fans alike were attracted to the soft, enticing backgrounds. Bv HAROLD HEFFERNAN North Amprlnn NWkpapr AIUajic Hollywood Harlow" producer Joe Levine is seeing red these days and thats because he's seeing so much pink. This little contradiction is traced to the fact that a rival Harlow" moviemaker has not only stolen Joes title and threatens to heat him to the theatpr screens by six months, but now the fellow has run off with his prized color scheme for exploiting the movie. Joe is mad clean through the last straw was that pink take-o er. As the bitter contest rages between the two celluloid tycoons Levine, the modern Barnum of ballyhoo, and newcomer Bill Sargent, head of the swift-shooting new process known as Electrono-vision as to watch will end up with the most profitable version of the platinum blonde sexpot's iurid life story.

Holly-weed looks on in amazement. Never in this quarter of show business has there broken out such a ding-dong, no-holds-b a rred brawl over a screen property. THAT IT will wind up in the courts is the almost foregone conclusion of those behind-the-sceners operating in the rival camps. The name-calling, both in private and in public, would make a blistering reel of filrp, probably more sensational than anything that could spring from either of the finished Harlow movies. Both Levine and Sargent are claiming eventual victory, with Sargent currently leading on vocal points.

The ramifications narrow down, at least for the moment, to which of the two factions owns legal rights to use of the prized title of Harlow." Levine claims it by reason of prior registration and by his purchase of the best-seller titled Harlow by Irving Shulman, for $150,000. Sargent insists its in public domain, that anyone has a right to pick it up for stage, screen, television or any sort of vehicle. And he has ignor SAT. 12 H. Heres what was said: John: Its marvelous to be back in London, Shei-lah, after four weeks of tearing around hot and humid Nassau and then freezing high on the Austrian ski slopes.

How much can this frail body stand against such elements and such odds Ringo: Its all right for you, John, but I don't write in my spare time, and I couldnt very well carry my drums half way around the world George: I have a great idea. For our next film, lets ask Walter (Shfnson, the producer) to shoot the enure picture in Liverpool, using all our relatives and friends. We could call it Everythings Relative or Whos Been Sleeping in My Porridge? which are better titles than Eight Arms to Hold You. Ringo: We wanted to use Stop the World, Ve Want to Get On." but I believe that Brandos doing that. Paul: What's in a name so long as they don't give John and me a title iike In His Own Write" we can do a song.

Sheilah: By the way, John, now that you are a literary success, do you have plans for any more books? John: Not at the moment, but my publishers tell me that A Spaniard in The Works will he released in London in June. It's written in Liserpool-ese and very enjoyable while sailing on the Mersey George: Maybe we should write our true experiences during the filming of Eight Arms to Hold You" and get United Artists to distribute it when the film comes out in August, We could then reply to that columnist who accused us of using four letter words. Paul: We may have used snob and pooh Ringo: Somehow we are terribly vulnerable 24 hours of the day and are expected to be dignified regardless of the terrible conditions we encounter, not only in Nassau, but also in England.

Nobody wants to respect our privacy, and after a hard day's night we get irritable and tired we are human, you know, and not insects, as some people claim. John: Sheilah, you have been around personalities for many years, and know that legends often crop up that have no bais in ict. I guess we hae to he the victims of our society. Stones are printed about us that are so untrue that they become grotti (grotesque) when analyzed. We try not to read too much, as it might affect our charming personalities.

Taul: Thank goodness we have our music, which Brian (Epstein) has fostered. Even George is now writing songs for our company. George: Now its up to Ringo to write a concerto for drums, which could be called Skin Deep. Ringo: Why does everyone worry about me I have Maureen and a new poodle named Tiger, and I'm happy. The Austrian location was marvelous, as we both learned to ski, and we came home to a new apartment and adopted an American photographer named Henry Gross-man, who was shooting for Life magazine.

John: Yes. Henry came to my remodeled home in Surrey and respected my privacy, so we let him shoot Cynthia and Julian. By the way, Sheilah, do you know why Capitol Records doesn't print on the back of our albums who does the singing? Last year when we were on tour, many disc jockeys said that I was singing, when actually it was Paul. Over here (England), each song is explained. Paul: By the way, we haven't written the title song for Eight Arms to Hold You, as there has been some talk of a possible change.

Six of the ten songs John and I wrote will be featured in the picture. Ticket to Ride" (a single) has now been released, but it mav not be In the picture as previously announced. Ringo: Are we going to see you in New York in August? By sheer coincidence we are planning to attend the premiere of our new film whatever the title is before ojiening in that ball park. Will the Jets be playing the same day? John: Its the Mets not the Jets, and majbe they would let us umpire. George: After all, weve got eight arms to help thpm Sheilah: Goodbye, boys, my dimes run out Beatles: Goodbye, Shei-lah.
