Gainers Annual Reunion Slated The annual reunion of one of the oldest families in lliis area of tlie state will i)e held Sunday, Sept, 16 at the inSouthport, when the descendants of Williann and Jane Watts Gainer gather for their yearly get-togetlier. It is the 23rd reunion of the members of the large family who come together to renew ties of kinship with those with whom they share a common heritage and to honor the memory of their ancestral dead. William Gainer born 1787, was a young man when he, as a member of Gen. Andrew- Jackson's staff, made the historic march across the Florida panhandle when it was Spanish territory in 1818. On completion of the tour, Gainer returned to his home in Washington County, Ga.

and moved his family to the area of the Econfina Creek of Washington County in Florida. While he was scouting Jackson he had realized the good grazing possibilities for cattle, the abundance of fish and wildlife and the nearness of North Bay for shellfish. By the winter of 1824, William had his family settled. Someone, it is said, once asked William how he made a living in an area that seemed so agriculturally unactractive. He replied, "I don't.

The living here is already made." He and Jane raised 12 children and from these the descendants are numbered in the hundreds.
