SCREEN DRAMA MUSIC LEN BOYD, Editor VALLEY TIMES; WEDNESDAY, MAY 18, 1955 21 If you're a little shaky shout confronting black cats, walking under ladders, breaking mirrors, or viewing full moons over the wrong shoulder, it may comfort you to know that many of your motion-picture idols are in the same fix. In fact, when Tennessee pictured his passionate heroine of "The Rose Tattoo" as superstitious women he might have had the star herself, Anna Magnant, in mind.

For Miss Magmini, like dozens of others, has a goodly sha re of su perstitions. She's wary of black cats, says the Italian equivalent of "bread and butter" when an object separates her from a companion and refuses to see other movies while working in one herself for fear the character will put a hex on the one she's playing. Considering that Susan Hayward and Marlene Dietrich consult the stars or guidance and that Bob hope is afraid to pass up a street beggar. Magnani's movie-plot belief in witches, evil eyes and the like seems not so far-fetched at all. Marilyn Monroe has a superstition about, of all things, poetry.

In case you've wondered what she does on rainy nights, she writes poetry. Moody stuff, it keeps her happy for days to come, she is convinced. Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis have, quite fittingly, a joint 'superstitionand a common one. They discourage whistling in dressing rooms. Anita Ekberg, now working with them in "Artists and Models," believes the supernatural effects of broken mirrors are thwarted by saving all the pieces.

Another newcomer, I rl MacLaine, harbors an "Auld Country" fear acquired from a great aunt. As a child she saw the aunt draw "X's" above doors for good luck, and when she makes a fervent wish she does likewise. NIGHT LETTER I --ELIA KAZANISs''" EXPLOSIVE PRODUCTION OF JOHN STEINBECK'S EXPLOSIVE PRODUCTION OF JOHN STEINOECK'S By HY GARDNER nqt 4 0 By BOB THOMAS If you think you have troubles getting your jalopy started in the morning, consider Jim Human's chore. He has 150 ancient autos in his care, ranging back to an 1898 horseless carriage.

Jim is the transportation head at 20th Century-Fox. That means he must supply movies with cars, both antiquated and brand new. The new cars are a cinch. Like several other studios, 20th has a tieup with a major auto firm, which provides new cars for virtually nothing. The car company figures that having its produce seen in big pictures is well worth the expense.

The cars are listed in a file according to vintage, with a cross-file providing a picture and details. Usually the 'correct auto can be found in the studio's long shed that houses the old-timers. A file is kept of nearby cars that can rented from private owners. Bud Anheuser of the transportation department displayed some of the antiques, "Maintenance is our principal probiem," said Bud. "We used to dust the cars off once a week and fill the tires with air.

But when we came to use them in a picture we still had to overhaul them completely. So now we just let 'em gather dust. WARNER BROS. Po.
