Editor By ERSKINE JOHNSON Valley Times TODAY 24 Sept. 10, 1962 Rumanians Coming The unusually rich and than 50 other cities of the United States. Performing in authentic costumes, these celebrated young dancers and musicians colorfully demonstrate the diversity and wealth of their native culture. varied folk art of Rumania be amply demonstrated here on Saturday night, Oct.

in Pasadena Civic Auditorium by the renowned Rumanian National Folk Ensemble and the Barbu SAN FRANCISO (AP) Conductor Josef Krips has been named to take aver the feud-plagued San Francisco Symphony Orchestra beginning with the 1963-1964 fall-to-spring season. The Vienna-born maestro will face a situation described by out-going conductor Enrique Jorda as "not a good one a small opposition is steadily undermining the structure and morale of the symphony. MUSIC critic Alfred Frankenstein said, No matter who conducts the Symphony, it will have to change with the times and stop clinging to a schedule adopted a quarter of a century ago. Unlike most symphony orchestras, the Bay City organization puts on very few performances outside the city. Jorda, who resigned May 2 after a running battle the past few years, will stay on to conduct in 1962-63.

22 at 8:30 p.m. Tony Marlin Fans Enjoy Tony Marlin By DAVE HOLLAND Vallry Time TODAY Anlaruinmi-ni rtter The dapper Mr. Tony Martin has a magificent voice. All you have to do is hear him to realize that. He is a song stylist par ex cellance.

Of this, too, there is no doubt but the patronizing manner in which he displays his talents makes you struggle to enjoy them. Watching the singer stroll peacock-proud about the stage of the Ambassador Hotels Cocoanut Grove, its hard to avoid the (we hope erroneous) impression that we are expected to be beside ourselves with joy that he is gracing our lives with his presence. THE FASHIONABLE singer, who opened a 10-day engagement at the Grove Friday night, delivers his numbers with a supercilious expression combined with exaggerated gestures that would make Greek tragedians blush and as a result, his songs come out second best if youre watching him. Every so often opening night, a particularly exag gerated gesture would be followed by a loud guffaw from some uninitiated male. This would be immediately followed by a chorus of Shhhs from the assembled legion of fans who, admittedly, do enjoy him immensely, no matter what he does.

MARTINS patronizing attitude was not limited opening night to the audience either. When it came time to introduce a quartet of two shapely girls and two men who do some fine backing on occasional numbers, Martin had to refer to a piece of paper, explaining in languid tones: I just havent had time to learn their names yet." But if you pay no heed to his stage presence and concern yourself only with his singing, youll be entertained because, as we said, he does have a beautiful voice and ably uses it in such hits as Theres No Tomorrow, "I Get Ideas, Ill See You In My Dreams and "Fascination. RESERVED SEAT tickets for Darryl F. Zanucks "The Longest Day went on sale today at the Carthay Circle Theater where it will have its West Coast premiere Oct. II.

John Wayne, above, is just one of the myriad of stars appearing in the epic D-Day story. The first four nights Oct. 11, 12, 13 and 14 have already been sold out First available seats are for the Saturday and Sunday matinees, Oct. 13 and 14, and for Monday night, Oct. 15.

SPOKEN DRAMA TONITE 6 DAYS! ENDS NEXT SUNDAY! SHIPSTADS JOHNSON fee 1962 Follies iBPWii ATHENS The Greeks dont have a word for it, but, man, they sure are doing it! The Twist is untranslatable in Greek but the gyrations are the same everywhere and the dance craze is as popular here as in the U.S.A. Teen-agers are twisting even on Sunday to the tune of Never On Sunday, which practically has become Greeces national anthem. It is, at least, during the summer tourist season. But there is no doubt, even among the Greeks, that the combination of the movie hit, Never On Sunday, and the jet age put little old out-of-the-way Greece on the European tourist map. In three years, the tourist trade has tripled and so have prices.

Movie makers also are discovering Greece with MGMs In the Cool of the Day here two months ago; Warner Bros. "Not On Your Life just departed; Llia Kazan due in any day with a company and Decision at Delphi slated for the backcountry this fall. BUT IF THERE IS TO be glory in Greece again as Touristland, somebody, says Morton leek Da Costa (who directed Not On Your Life), better put a ceiling on the prices, quick. After seeing the price of a hotel room on the island of Hydra go from $1.20 to $8 a day when his film company arrived, he wailed to us: The Greeks are going to kill the goose that laid the golden egg before the egg is laid. What Greece needs is some "fresh Greek ruins.

After seeing the Parthenon on the Acropolis of Athens and the ruins of Delphi 100 miles away, visitors start asking each other, "Where do we go now? Theres always the port of Piraeus, where "Sunday was filmed, but its as rough and tough a waterfront city as youd find anywhere. The Greek islands are great to see from a private yacht and during the summer the weather in Athens is so hot (110' for weeks), we overheard one tourist bus guide complain about his passengers: "It was so hot nobody got out of the bus to go through ANYTHING except beer. WELL, AT LEAST GREECE has some "fresh ruins now that the "Not On Your Life film company spent a month on the island of Hydra. The films plot is about faking the discovery of a new Greek "island of love and1 it was art director Eid Carreres job to erect an "old Greek temple. It was cheaper to leave the temple on the island than to tear it down and it has since become a new tourist attraction.

So much Greek art has wound up over the years in the British museum in London that Eds chuckling: "If our temple ruins are discovered by the British and sent to London Im going to ask Warner Bros, for a raise in salary." The Greeks may not have a word for Twist, but theyre doing all right on movie lingo. "Quiet on the set is Isihia; "Emros means "Action and "Kopse means "Cut. The Greek word for "Ready is "Etimi but just how it is pronounced "Teek DaCosta will never know. To him it sounded like Auntie Marne (the title of his first movie hit). Bob Preston, Tony Randall and other members of the cast of "Not On Your Life soon knew exactly when DaCosta was ready for them.

He just shouted Auntie Marne and the camera started rolling at the Studio Alpha.
