Opening night of "The Dream" Is expected to set a new high in glamour and theatrical excitement as the whose-who of the social, and entertainment industry on attending the white tie tails event. 4 By HAROLD HEFFERNAN In one of the slickest television deals signed by any screen star to date, Claudette Colbert has finally tied up with CBS to do a series of eight showsand for a reported $800,000. It wasn't so much the cash end of the transaction that dragged negotiations on and off for the last six months but two other factors that were of greater personal importance to Claudette. For one thing, she insisted upon sufficient outside time to continue her career in movies and this was the big hitchshe refused to be coaxed into stepping out of character and doing commercial plugs for the show's sponsor. It's this personal sales-pitch side of TV, that has stirred the ire of many a proud screen star in discussing otherwise tempting deals with that medium.

"Let the professional spielers do the Job; they can put the heart and soul into it that I cannot," was Claudette's finally accepted edict. Dana Andrews, one of the most militant of the screen's TV holdout gang, was approached recently by a big national advertiser to do a dramatic seriesDana himself to speak up for the cigarettes. "Why do you ask me to do that," retorted Dana, "when you don't even ask the prize fighters at the end of their bouts to plug the beer or the razor blades?"
