The victory of Thorpe's men over the Akron team last Sunday by a 14 to 0 score was a big mark in their favor. Some unsually heavy e'xpenses are attached with the conducting of the big professional teams, but the attendance at the games has done much towards meeting those. Last Sunday thousands had to be turned away because of the lack of seating arrangements after 17,000 had been admitted. Jim West, captain of the Colgate eleven, rejected an offer of $1000 to play next Sunday With the Cleveland Tigers, a professional team, according to a report here. West desires to retain his amateur standing for basketball and football.

Weather conditions made it neces sary to postpone the first annual football game between the elevens of the Kdison and Camp Curtin Junior High Schools, scheduled to have been played on the Island grounds this afternoon.

Friday afternoon has been decided as the time for the conflict, with the same program to be carried out. Announcement to this effect was made this morning by Coaches Oeisel and Miller following a conference. The condition of the field would have made playing difficult, and the rain would have bsen a factor in keeping hundreds of persons who desire to see the contest away from the Island today. Beckley College Students Organize Athletic Body Thanksgiving Rejoicing-in the blessings of a kind Providence grateful to our brave soldiers and sailors, whose bravery and sacrifices brought about a victorious and righteous peace, and glad that many were spared to be home again with loved ones and associates on this occasion, I am deeply thankful to my friends for their patronage and good will. Very truly, Next week will mark the opening of the two game a week program of the Harrisburg Independent Basketball team.

There will be two contests this week, one tomorrow night and one Saturday night, but that of tomorrow Is a holiday game. Tuesday night has been decided upon as the data for each of the extra week games after this Saturday. Contests will be held on the Chestnut Street Auditorium floor on each Tuesday and Saturday nights In which the Independent five will figure, and each of these Is to be followed by dancing. The decision to play an additional game each week was made following a pressure that was brought to bear upon the Independent-management by many fana of the game who are unable to get to the Saturday tilts. It Is the Intention of Manager Ford to continue to secure strong attractions for every game, and the fans will be given the beat during the Winter months.

The Garnets, booked to oppose the Indies' tomorrow, Thanksgiving night, are sure to give a good account of themselves. Dienes and Halre, the two elongated forwards of the combination, have played In Harrisburg on a' number of occasions, and have always showed up well. The fact that four of the five members or the Garnet team have been playing together for years is an Item In their favor, for it shouW guarantee a fast and clever contest. Little Information has been secured here as yet concerning the Norristown team, which Is to be the opponent of the Independents in the Saturday night game this week. Norristown has long boasted a good representative combination, and there Is no reason to believe that there will be any change In the calibre this year.

PERSHING TO SEE ARMY-NAVY TILT The renewal of hostilities on the gridiron between the Army and Navy elevens next Saturday will bring out a capacity crowd. John B. Foster, of the New Tork basoball olub, which is handling the ticket sale for the game, today (announced that all reserved seats Vlth the exception of a few scattering box seats have been sold. In this case he was mistaken, for the two teams, those of the Army and Navy, directed by and is said to be of about the same calibre as the Mercersburg Academy eleven.

Manlius, while not undefeated, has had a very successful season on the gridiron. 1 Her defeats have been limited almost wholly to gamei played with husky freshmen elevens of New York State universities. Syracuse and Colgate both claim Manllus scalps, but the prep school eleven held the Maroon Fresh to a 2 to 0 score, although outweighed many pounds to a man. Since the Colgate game, staged as a preliminary to the Colgate-Syracuse varsity battle, the Manlius boys have been resting up and pointing for the Erie pame. Erie Is a historic rival of Manllus, and honors to date are about even.

Coach Bill Girton, of the Manlius team, Monday started his proteges on the final grind of training work. The scrimmage of Monday was followed by a light workout yesterday and today the Manlius squad will hit the trail for Erie. Manllus will spring a series of new plays on the Keystone eleven, the past two weeks having been spent In perfecting them. The Erie High School eleven is yet to be defeated, this season, and has piled up a total of 297 points against the 19 scored by its opponents. But two teams have crossed the Erie goal line this season.

The Galahad basketball team will play the Tremont cage team at Tre-mont this evening. A second game between these two rival aggregations has been scheduled for tomorrow night. The lineup for the Galahads will be: Gebhard, Cobaugh, Wolfe, Scheffer and Storey. Tech's prospects for a victory over the Erie iligh School eleven at Erie Saturdajr were brightened yesterday with the Information that the Erie eleven is booked for another, championship tilt prior to that with the Maroon and Gray. According to a report from Syracuse, N.

the Manllus School eleven, winner of the Central New York State preparatory title, is to clash tomorrow with the Erie High School team at Erie. While Tech also has a Thanksgiving Day content on its schedule, the game is not expected to cause Tech as much trouble as the Manlius contest will likely direct to Erie. The New York State team carried off the championship among the preparatory schools of Central New York State, The Navy's football squad will be so, but drew the short end of a 20 to 6 score. Lafayette High School of Buffalo, one of the best schoolboy football machines in Western New York, was the only other team to score, butl ost 83 to 13. Erie High, which will wind up Its season with the Tech game, has the following record to date: Erie 41 Dunkirk 0 41 Greenville 0 7 wood, of 0 64 Fifth of Pottesburgh 0 38 Jamestown 0 20 Tonawanda 6 33 Lafayette, of Buffalo 13 13 Carnegie Tech 0 Weather conditions have prevented Coach Smith from putting the Tech squad through any workout, and it is probable that the Maroon and Gray combination will go Into tomorrow afternoon's tilt with the Steelton High School without other practice than a blackboard drill, which is scheduled for this afternoon.

Steelton High School's squad were booked to figure In a signal practice this afternoon, despite the wet grounds. The Steelton team appears to be in fair shape, and is confident that it will be able to give the Tech team a run for its money. Coach Cocklll announced today that he expects to send the regular lineup in at the, start of the tilt. Tech's squad is In good physical condition with the exception of Beck-and Wilsbach. These players will likely be kept out of tomorrow's game so that no chances are taken of their being unable to lineup against Erie.

Llngle will in all probability start against Steelton. It Is likely that a number of the Second string players will get into the fray before the close. Tech's squad is booked to leave Harrisburg tomorrow evening, after the Steelton contest, for Erie. Upon the arrival In that city hotel occom-modations will be secured and the players will take it easy for a time. Friday afternoon a Blight signal practice Is to be held, permission having been granted for the use of the Erie High School field for this.

One of the reasons, and apparently the most direct one. which cost Harrisburg the Erie High School contest The Oapitol City Reserves of Harrisburg, will play Boy Scout Troop No. 1, of Elizabethtown, in a basketball game at the Camp Curtin Junior High School gymnasium tonight. This game had originally been scheduled to be played on the Technical High School Gymnasium floor. All persons holding- tickets of admission to the Tech floor will be admitted at the Camp Curtin building.

Secretaries Baker and Daniels, of the War and Navy Dep.r-ments. Generals Pershing and March, and many other high Army and Navy officials will witness the contet.

Vice President Marshall Is expected to attend. While most of the football battlers in tnhlA rp over I-. the American legion, had started to work in boosting their game, and had expended more than $200 before the Tech question was raised. The Legion officials announced themselves as being willing to turn the field over to Tech providing the money they had spent In preparing advertising and other arrangements would be given them. They fixed this at $225, an'i the Tech authorities, feeling they Mould not meet this and the large gud antee for Erie, decided to make the ar'ange-nents to transfer the game to the iVestern Pennsylvania city, and did so.

The Army and Navy game Is to be conducted Saturday. Just what plans have been made concerning the combinations have not been made public, but all of this will doubtlessly be announced on Friday. From present appearances two formidable lineups are 'to be put against each other, and the contest, should attract a large crowd. The Masten Park High School, of Buffalo, N. is scheduled to meet the Maroon and Gray at Island Park on December 6.

Last night a letter was posted-to the Scott High School, claimants of the United States championship for the. past two years. In the letter the Tech manager challenged the Scott eleven to a post season game to be ployed on any field In the country. It is thought probably, by the local management, that in case the Scott officials accept the challenge that the game will be staged jn Harrisburg on December 13 pr 20. turkey tomorrow, eight teams of the east Win os nara ai in moii game of the season.

On the eve of the annual Pltt-Penn State football game, Captain Jimmy De Hart, halfback, and "Jim" Morrow, quarterback, were declared by the Pitt University faculty to bo Ineligible to play in tomorrow's game because of scholastic deficiencies.

This authoritative announcement today created a great stir in college circles, as Pitt's chances of victory over her ancient rival are immeasurably reduced. McCracken probably will be sent to the backfleld, while Ginn or Eckert will replace him at left end. Joe Llghtner, the regular State halfback who suffered an Injury In scrimmage a few days ago, will make the trip to Pittsburgh, but will not get in the tilt. The Maryivllle youth's ankle bone has not been fractured, as had first been thought, but the leg is in bad shape. A varsity squad of 2S men left State for Pittsburgh today.

The most probable State lineup will "Include 'Dick' Rauch and Clarence Beck, both of Harrisburg. Charlie Way will get in the backfleld. Should the latter te unable to finish the tilt, it Is probable that Glenn Killlnger, a Harrisburg player, will get In the game at halfback. Bucknell will likely enter Its fray with Dickinson at Carlisle tomorrow in better shape than the Dickinson squad will be. The Dickinson team has several players on the hospital list about whose partlciption in the tilt there are some doubts.

Marcus, Toung and Pritchard are all said to be suffering with minor Injuries. The most probable lineup for Dickinson to start the fray will include Uoeltz. Healy, Obermiller, Rich, Dougherty, Marcus, Pritchard, Wertacnik, Siegenfuss, Palm and Toung. Bucknell'a lineup has not been announced, but few If any changes re expected over that o( their last few contests. All of Bucknell'a men are in fair trim apparently.

The Harrisburg and Steelton group, including Ebner, Bihl. Lauster, Dayhoff and Morr.ett. Is expected to start In the Bucknell lineup. Mays, the Harrisburg athlete, and Mellinger, a star backfleld man who haa been out of the game during the greater part of the season because of injuries, are both expected to take places In the Franklin and Marshall lineup against Gettysburg tomorrow at Incaster. Mellinger was expected to be one of the best men on the team prior to the start of the season, but a fractured bene put him on the hospital list.

Dechant is also expected to get in the game. With Wie probability that Moyer and Bream will be unable to get into the fray, the Gettysburg eleven will enter the game against F. and M. somewhat handicapped. Among the Gettysburg men who are expected to start are Houts, Marts, Phillips and Emanuel.

The one that Is likely to attract the most persons from Harrisburg and direct Vicinity is that scheduled between the Bucknell University and Dickinson College elevens on Biddle Field Carlisle. The other, between the Gettysburg and Franklin- and Marshall College teams, will attract a fair number, however. It will be played on the F.

While Bucknell and Gettysburg are the favorites for tomorrow's Ailta. there are possibilities of surprises in both instances, but particularly In that of the Lancaster clash. State College's contest with tha University of Pittsburgh is also attracting considerable interest in this section.

While very few perni from the district will attend the owing to the virtual Impossibility to secure seats'at the Forbes Field, the bulletins concerning the battle will be eagerly received at this end. State's combination apparently has the largest backing in this vicinity, but Pitt Is well represented, and there are evidences of keen rivalry between the followers of each. From all appearances the State-Pitt game will be a very close and hard fought contest.
