Preponderantly staffed by Valleyites, it represents one of the finest department stores directed by the nationally famous 74-year-old Butler Brothers wholesale and retail operation. Spacious parking space in back of the building has three entrances and exits. Stocks, By SAM DAWSON' NEW YORK, Sept, 17 Various government spokesmen are spreading cheer today, Their theme: You never had it so good. Over in the business section, however, the topic is: How long will the business lull continue? It narrows down to a question of timing. Industrial production is on the upswing and will never go back to its pre-Korean pacethat's the promise of Defense Mobilizer Charles E.

Wilson. But at the same time, some business observers are noting that the recovery In August from the July production slump wasn't as big this year as it had been In 1949 and 1950. They wonder If business is being throttled by controls be. fore the defense program really call for it. Pay Seale Up Wilson says pay scales will stay above their pre-Korean level, too.

He adds that "the economy is going to expand" until within a year and a half the nation will have both a 'magnificent defense structure and a sound civilian economy." The theme that Americans never had it so good is taken up by the Department of Commerce which compares conditions today with the "good old days'' of 1929. It says the nation's production of goods and services had jumped 172 per cent since 1929. That's In terms of present billion in 1950 against $103.8 billion In 1929. The department then translates It into 1929 dollars, which bought considerably more than present ones. It finds that using the 1929 commodity value of the dollar, 1950 production would be only $186.5 billion.

That is still a gain of 80 per cent on the $103.8 billion of 1929. Taxes Jump Too Personal income in 1950 totalled $224.7 billion, against $85.1 billion in 1929. But taxes on personal In. come jumped to $205 billion last year from a mere $2.6 billion in the year of the big stock market bust. In other words, taxes took three per cent of personal income In the earlier year and 10 per tent last year.

Corporation profits In 1929 were only $9.8 billion and last year jumped to $41.4 billion. But cot. poration taxes lumped even faster from $1.4 billion in 1929 to $lat; billion In 1950, or from under 10 per cent to nearly 50 per cent. so this themeyou never had it so goodla tempered a little. Your Income may be bigger than ever before, but, brother, so is your outgo.
