Pago 9 a. Bird's Eye View Eric Burdick Lucia Mar Keeps All Sports, But Cuesta Drops Football '0 S' Fn Jo I 28 978 Fie Cities Times Press Recorder, Arroyo Gronde, Colif. As trustees of the various school districts in San Luis Obispo County mull over cuts deemed necessary by the passage of Proposition 13 last month, the future of athletic programs will be, is now being, or has been discussed. Cuesta Colleges trustees elected to drop football in order to keep the other nine sports on a modified, league-schedule only basis. The Lucia Mar Unified School District Board of Education did not have to take such drastic measures.

While keeping the entire athletic program intact, the board cut out a few items that eventually will save the district about $41,000. Among the items the board axed from the 1977-78 Arroyo Grande High School athletic budget were: District support of student insurance $10,800) Late afternoon activity-sports bus run (25,330) Reduced levels of police support at games Extra custodial time. The Northern League, of which Arroyo Grande High School is a member, has taken some steps in light of financial problems faced by the six member schools. Among the agreements already made, the league will reduce all triple round robin schedules to a double round robin format (baseball and tennis) and add no more sports for league competition. Those changes are to be implemented for the 1979-80 school year.

League officials also plan to discuss in August a reduction in the number of practice games in each sport, and a reduction from three-level squads (varsity, junior varsity and frosh) to two-level squads (varsity, frosh-soph) for 19794W. District support for athletic programs at the two intermediate schools in the Lucia Mar District has been eliminated. The board also reinstated the extra duty pay schedule for teachers who also are coaches. Extra duty pay was one of the first items deleted from the budget prior to the June 30 deadline. Overall the Lucia Mar District was faced with a 12 per cent cut in its budget, having to reduce its 1977-78 budget of an estimated $11.5 million by $1.38 million.

On the other hand, Cuesta College trustees must wrestle with an 11 per cent cut thanks to Prop. 13, requiring slashing of $740,000 from last years budget of $6.85 million. Lucia Mar school officials found a way to cut nearly 40 per cent from their athletic budget, and still maintain full schedules in all sports. Cuesta trustees werent as successful, deeming it necessary to cut 54 per cent from the budget, and, in the process, dropping football the largest revenue-producing sport for the school. Lucia Mar officials had to cut more money, a larger percentage, than Cuesta, yet Cuesta made more drastic cuts in its athletic program.
