Feb. 24, 1984 Five Cities Times-Press-Recorder, Arroyo Grande, Calif. THREE FORMER EAGLES IN LINEUP Page 21 Treanor Faces First Year As Cougar Baseball Coach who works real well with Roberts, Treanor said, has a great at-' titude, and is going to help us this year. Wes Brown (SLOHS) brings lots of talent and good speed to the Cougar outfield, and another Poly transfer, Scott January, is a solid hitter who could challenge Gleason at third or fill the designated hitter role. How good will the 1984 Cougars be? I honestly dont know, Treanor said.

Ive never coached at this level. Right now, were just trying to eliminate mistakes. One of our biggest problems to overcome is last season. But well be better. How much the players want it will determine how far we can go.

Cuesta finished 2-18 in Western State Conference play last year, and Treanor sees at least a four-team race against 1983s first and second place finishers Taft and Ventura, with Oxnard and Hancock and perhaps the Cougars challenging for the title. Cuesta opens non-conference play with a noon double header on Saturday Feb. 18, against Gavilan College on the Cuesta diamond. Holdgrafer (SLOHS), and Treanor thinks he should help us with a new pitching style this season. Promising local freshman will compete for several infield and outfield spots, and Treanor will be looking closely at four former county stars and a pair of Cal Poly transfers to form his pitching staff.

Two of them are former Atascadero High standout righthanders who were selected as County Player of the Year the past two seasons. Donnie Peters (1982), who redshirted last season, and Billy Simons (1983) will make it tough to get down to three starters, Treanor said. Two San Luis Obispo High righthanders David Baur and hard throwing Tim Jackson will be competing with Poly transfer righthander Mark Manley and lefthander Steve Burt with great motion and delivery, who could start or come out of the bullpen. Atascadero High football fans will remember Eric Scotty Griffin, who has the tools and potential, and who could hit the long ball for us at shortstop. He will team with Curtis Roberts (AGHS), who will start at second and SAN LUIS OBISPO First-year Cuesta College baseball coach Dean Treanor said last June that he wanted to stay as local as possible in building a winning Cougar team, and it seems he has been true to his word.

Treanor took over a club which suffered through a dismal 8-25 season in 1983, and he will be looking to a talented turnout of many former county high school stars to turn things around in 1984. Several holdovers from last season all local products will lend their experience and, Treanor hopes, some power to the lineup. Sophomore third baseman Pat Gleason (San Luis Obispo High) crushes the ball, according to Treanor, and returning first baseman Zach James (Arroyo Grande High) will also be looked to for offensive punch. Danny Knotts (AGHS) returns his speed and one of the best arms in the outfield to right, and 1983 reserve catcher Tom Harrington (Templeton High) could see action if he improves with the bat. Only returning sophomore on the pitching staff will be righthander Garry OFFENSIVE PUNCH Senior booter (7) Joe Rivera and hard-kicking (21) junior Luciano Chavez will help lead the Arroyo Grande Eagle varsity soccer team into play today when they enter the first round of CIF playoff action against Hart.

Hart won the Foothill League this year with an 8-0-2 record and twice tied highly rated San Gabriel during the season. Coached by Dave Fer-ree, the team is made up, like AGHS, of many ex-AYSO players. Gametime for the contest at Newhall on the Indians field is 3 p.m. AG finished third in league this season behind Northern League champions Cabrillo and second place Lompoc. Once there McTeer dropped a 5-4 bout to fourth seed Charger of Villa Park. Battling for a high place finish. McTeer had the unlucky draw of eventual champ Schumm who won 13-2. Meanwhile at the 129 pound level, Betita had a :55 pin and a 5-3 decision victory before losing his next two matches. In his last bout, Betita lost 11-4 to Clementi.

game of the state playoffs, and Lee hopes she performs as she did last year. Behind the plate will be last years starting catcher Lisa Niesen, who handles Karen well and is strong defensively and who was selected on the all-WSC second team. But Lee said the key to our success this season will be sophomore shortstop Terri Wright (Atascadero High School). A tough out with good baserunning skills, good speed and one of the better defensive shortstops in community college softball, the all-WSC and all-Southern California 1983 first-team selection will be the Cougars leadoff hitter this year. Returning to third base will be defensive standout Gale Gummerman (Righetti High School), an all-WSC honorable mention in 1983.

Another sophomore, Tammie Thome (Arroyo Grande High), out leading hitter last 7x777 in Betita advances to the Masters as an alternate, while McTeer goes in on a regular bracket entry. Sixteen brackets are included in the Masters Meet. In order for a wrestler to win in his weight class, he must win four straight bouts. The top five wrestlers in each class then advance to the CIF State Championships March 2-3 at Independence High in San Jose. 20th place team finish among the 52 schools entered.

Although it lasted for only one round, AG actually led the prestigious tournament in team standings. The six Eagle wrestlers entered all did well in first-round pairings, and that gave the team its early boost. On the strength of an individual champion, two second-place and a third place finisher. Northern League champion Lompoc took third in the team standings. Mike Villalobos, a junior 122-pounder captured a CIF Southern Section championship for the Braves when he beat Edgewoods Ray Carter in the finals.

Kevin Scruggs, two time NL champ, took second place by a narrow 8-7 loss to Scott Schumm, also of Edge wood at 141 pounds. Robert Potter took second in the heavy-weight class, while teammate Nick Gonzalez took a third at 115 pounds. Three sophomores also return to compete for outfield positions: strong-armed Lisa Blair (Arroyo Grande High), the probable starter in right field; and two 1983 reserves, much improved Katy Kennedy (Coast Union High), and Julie Hayes, who has been impressive with the bat in practice, according to Lee. A talented group of first-year play ers have the advantage of learning from the experienced sophomores, which makes Lees job much easier from the coaching standpoint. But we have some big shoes to fill at first base, in the out- field and as a second pitcher behind Canfield. Cuesta opened the season at home on Saturday, Feb.

We won last year going away, but now were the team to beat, he said this week. Were coming in with the attitude that last season was a success, but this is 1984, and we have to work just as hard to make this a successful year. Already working hard in practice is WSC Most Valuable Player Karen Can-field (Cabrillo High School), who pitched three no-hitters, three one-hitters and three two-hitters on her way to a 19-1 record and a 0.15 earned run average in 1983.
