McCAINTucson Citizen Four-year-old Steven Prust uses tempera paints to create his masterpiece at The Montessori Schoolhouse By DAN SORENSON Citizen Staff Writer 1 111 1 i A third of the staff of KDTU-TV Channel 1 8 an independent station owned by the Catholic Diocese of Tucson will be eliminated by April 1 due to the financial drain on the diocese an official of the diocese said yesterday Monsignor Charles A Bast vicar general for fiscal and administrative affairs said the staff cuts will affect every department of the station except advertising sales He said the cuts which will bring the staff down from about 60 to near 40 were the result of a diocese fiscal committee meeting with the manager on Monday Bast said he did not know exactly when the cuts were announced but said the employees were given no warning that the firings were coming 3 Robert Nordmeyer the station manager did not return phone calls yesterday Marcia Aylesworth the program director and second in command said she could not comment about the cuts Bast said Nordmeyer is not being fired and said the diocesan-level intervention in the Operation did not reflect dissatisfaction with performance Bast said the firings are the result of a re-evaluation of the role in diocesan finances He said station revenues are good or better than our original He said the station was not expected to show a profit for three to five years Bast said that although the decision was made at the diocesan level it does not indicate financial problems for the entire diocese i Bast said the station was intentionally overstaffed when it began broadcasting about two years ago to make a strong initial impression He said 40 to 5Q staff members is the industry norm for stations in market areas of this size KMSB-TV Channel 11 oldest independent station employs about 45 people and KPOL-TV Channel 40 another local independent has 22 staff members according to spokesmen for those stations i Sources at competing Tucson stations have said that in addition to having a disproportionately larger staff KDTU also has consistently "overbid" for syndicated shows Bast said the direction has been more commercial than originally intended by the diocese or than it was anticipated to be by the public But he said commercial success is necessary to keep the station operating That pursuit of commercial success Bast said has forced the station to carry some programming which he said the diocese would not run under ideal conditions He said the station buys programming in which obligate it to buy and run some shows it is not interested jp to get the ones it really wants He said he did not think the staff cuts would be obvious to viewers "You can't let some people go who had full-time jobs and not have some ripple effect" Bast said JL ArT Children need classics not Michael Jackson professor says By JULIE SZEKELY Citizen Staff Writer Limited probation for Amy Carter PROVIDENCE 'RI Amy Carter and 19 other
