LA. WEEKLY February 17-23, 1984 i Sugarhill Records bosslady Sylvia Robinson are involved in a lawsuit. Well, heres to you, Mrs. Robinson she owns the Grandmaster name and can use it any way she wants. Next time you see a Grandmaster Flash show advertised you better get The Message caveat emptor.

As for that other Kid Creole, his Lifeboat Party at the Palace sprung a leak last Friday. Compared to the non-stop energy of last years Roxy extravaganza, this years edition of Creole and The Coconuts was twice as long and a rambling, disjointed, lackluster mess that had a lot of real Creole fanatics jumping ship before it docked. However, word on the Saturday night performance was that it was great. Saturday night also included a party for the movie Against AH Odds, with stars like Jeff Bridges and the oldest crowd alive in attendance. The Fibonaccis and Skin played Madame Wongs Chinatown this weekend, and it turned out to be rather fiery.

Being the weekend of the Chinese New Year, the atmosphere was genuinely explosive. Dean Chamberlains combo (who, appropriately enough, open the new Meltdown at the O.N. Klub this Friday) were in the middle of an extremely srntillating set when they were joined onstage by the fabulous Joe Call Me Studmuffins Berardi for a cookin version of Marvin Gayes Innercity Blues. All of a sudden another figure got into the jam none other than the Dragon Lady herself, Esther Wong, who started gesturing frantically at Chamberlain and guitarist Greg. The audience, thinking Esther was going to pull the plug (something shes been known to do in the past) started booing her, but as it turned out, a live bomb had been found in the gift shop around the corner and everyone had to vacate the premises.

Outside, squad cars abounded, more firecrackers were going off than at the beach on the 4th of July, and everyone had to wait a half hour before going back in. Of course a bomb is nothing compared to seeing Fibonaccis and their wonder-dong drummer Joe. The Mentors actually played the Cathay this weekend and the incomparable El Duce got so wasted before the groups set that he passed out cold before showtime. Earache took over the vocal duties while Don Bolles pounded the in- Continued on page 38 L.A. DEE DA GOES PRIME TIME! Yes, this worthless column was discussed coast to coast on national television.

Claudia Lonow (a.k.a. Diana from the hit soap opera Knotts Landing) was a guest on The Tonight Show with Mr. Johnny Car-son, discussing interesting things to do around this pathetic burg. Lonow asked Johnny boy how he liked The Neville Brothers and Slash Records. When a mystified Johnny asked Claudia what the heck she was talking about, Ms.

Lonow whipped out a copy of our recent column. Johnny flatly denied being at the parties that we reported he was at, and quipped that the L.A. Weekly was not the New York Times. (God, you learn something new every day!) Now, folks, did we ever say which Johnny Carson was involved in our clubhopping report? The truly in people know, of course, that the Johnny Carson we refer to is not Ed McMahons side-kick but a grammar school crony of Chili Peppers Flea Anthony. He just happened to be born with a very useful legal name.

Anyway thanx, Claudia, for the free publicity. And Johnny dont change a thing. We love ya just the way ya are! Off Sunset opened this weekend. Friday night Phast Phreddie and Thee Precisions played to a star-studded audience including members of T.S.O.L., Eddie Munoz of The Plimsouls, Buster Bateman of The Blasters, and D.J.-about-town Potatohead, who is forming a rap group with three lovely buxom back-up singers, to be known as Radmaster Mash and the Taters Three. Which brings us to Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Fives show at Magic Mountain.

Or should we call it the Melle Mel Experience, since the king of two turntables, Joseph Sadler (a.k.a. Grandmaster Flash) was nowhere in sight. Neither were original Furious Flash members like Raheim, Cowboy and Kid Creole. Melle did have some white guy blowing up condoms on one side of the stage. Wow, thats heavy.
