THURSDAY MAY 26 1932 I VIRGINIA LEE BLACK Society Editor Office Phone 122 Residence Phone 169 LUNCHEON BRIDGE OR KANSAS CITY GUEST Complimenting Miss Mary Danner of Kansas City who is the house guest of Mrs Rollo ewel of Muskogee Mrs Clayton Burns entertained last Thurs day with a luncheon bridge in the dance hall at the Sallisaw dam Roses and other garden flowers were used to decorate the spacious hall where seven tables were placed for luncheon There were covers laid for twenty eight ollowing the luncheon contract bridge was played at three tables while auction bridge was played at four tables 'Irs Sam Pointer received the prize for high score and Mrs red Johnston for second high at the con tract game Mrs Pointer receiv ing consolation favor At the auction tables Mrs Selma Lewis scored high Mrs Gene Black of Paris Ark second high and Miss rances Sue Reager the consolation Miss Danner and Mrs Rollo ewel received guest favors The hostess was assisted in serving by Miss rances Oklahoma City where she has been a student Miss Okla Cheek and Miss Dorothy Payne who have been students at A college Stillwater will return home this week end Miss Irene Matthews will leave Mon day for Tahlequah where she will en ter Northeastern State Teachers col lege for the summer term Mr and Mrs Walter Ivey and dau ghter Miss Patsy Lee returned last riday from a visit in Seminole Guthrie and Oklahoma City Mrs red Sawyer who underwent a minor operation several days ago in a ort Smith hospital is improving and has returned to her home Miss Mary Janice Huggins is ex pected home this week end from Stil lwater where she attended A and college during the past semester Mrs John and small son have returned to their home in ort Smith after visiting Mrs parents Mr and Mrs Bibb Mr and Mrs Gene Black and small son returned riday to their home in Paris Ark after a several days visit with Mr mother Mrs Black Mack Matthews and Bill rye will return the latter part of the week from A college Stillwater where they have been students the past school Mrs Wheeler Mayo is entertaining the Thursday bridge club today in her homt Bob Hampton of Boynton is spending the week in Sallisaw as guest of red Dunean year Mrs rye and grand daughter Miss Dorothy rye are visiting this week in Ponca City with Mrs daughter Mrs William Armstrong and Dr Armstrong Mrs Cecil Bauman and children will leave today for Bartlesville to visit relatives Mrs Charlie Williams of Oklahoma City is visiting relatives and friends here this week Mrs Busby Lucas is spending the week in Van Buren Ark with her par ents Mr and Mrs Henson Mr and Mrs Neel and Earl Towry left Monday to motor to Pampa Texas where they will visit relatives Mrs Melvin aulkner left Monday to enter Northeastern Teachers col lege at Tahlequah for the summer ses sion Miss Ella Taylor has arrived from Oklahoma City and will install a beau ty shop at the home of her father A Taylor Leslie Hines who is employed in a bank at Blackwell will spend the week end with Ws wife and baby and other relatives Mrs Wood returned Sunday from Bartlesville where she spent the past wees wnn ner son ooy wooo ana Mrs Wood Mr and Mrs Woll left Satur day for Tonkawa where they were called by the illness of their son Dr James Woll red Ogle principal of the Sallisaw high school will enroll for the summer term at Northeastern Teachers college Tahlequah Miss Corynne Winter of Oklahoma City will spend the coming week end here with her parents Mr and Mrs Winter Mr and Mrs Robert Bugber of Tula are expected to spend the week end with Mr perenla Mr and Mrs Bugber Mr and Mrs erguson have gone to Tahlequah where they will at tend the summer session at Northeast ern State Teachers college Mr and Mrs Edward and son Argyle and Mrs Lucy Brodie ot Oklahoma City spent the week end in Sallisaw as guests of Mr and Mrs Eugene Beasley They left Monday morning accompanied by Mr and Mrs Beasley for Amarillo Texas where they will visit for about two weeks with Dr KeEam and Miss rancis Kelle am Mr and Mrs Edgar Ross and daughter Mildred of Boynton spent the week end in Sallisaw with Mrs mother Mrs Duncan Mil dred remained for a week's visit Mr and Mrs Ernest Spriggs and small daughter Norma Helen will spend the week end with relatives in Bristow They will return via Checo tah to attend a Rural Mail Carriers convention Monday Mrs Blair and Mr and Mrs Slover of Sallisaw and Mr and Mrs Hutches of Okmulgee at tended the funeral service for their sister and aunt Mrs Mary Love which was held last riday at Boone ville Arkansas MT and Mrs Kobel spent last week end in Oklahoma C'ty where they attended a piano recital given by their daughter Miss Emma Sue Kobel Miss Kobel is a student at Oklahoma City university and is a talented musi cian Dr and Mrs Orin Thompson ol Rogers Ark were guests Sunday nt the home of Mr and Mrs Cherry They were accompanied home by Mrs Cherry and children and Mary Katherine who will spend the week as their guests Mr and Mrs Ed Pinkerton ot Wil burton spent Saturday here as guests of friends TTiey will visit in Russel ville Ark and other points before re turning to Wilburton Mr and Mrs Pinkerton were married Saturday morning at Poteau Mr Pinkerton is a former resident of Sallisaw Mn Mary Jacobs of Muldrow spent last week end with her parents Mr and Mrs Baker Mn Jacoba has spent the past year in argo North Dakota with her son Willard Jacoba and family She also visited her dau ghters Miss Alice Jacobs at Tulsa and Miss Nita Jacobs of Shawnee Mn Payne and her sister Mrs A Armbruster of nrt Smith left Wednesday morning for Oklahoma City for a short visit before going to Stillwater to attend graduation exer cises at Oklahoma A and College Mrs Payne's son Wilbur Payne will graduate from that college Mrs Payne will also attend graduation ex ercises at Phillips university Enid where her daughter Mrs Wayne ord will graduate Mrs ord is the former Miss Okla Payne THE DEMOCR AT AMERICAN Page hsg Mrs Dan Matthews was called to Stigler Wednesday by the serious ill ness of her grand son John Edward Holcomb BREWER LIKES I OO HOME AT CHECOTAH Below is a letter received by Mr ears from Brewer former resi dent of Sallisaw who with his wife now resides at the I home at Checotah Mr Brewer is well known in Sallisaw and his letter will prove interesting to read It is as follows: Checotah Oklahoma May 22 1932 Dear Bro ears and all brothers: This leaves me and wife as well as we were when we left home The family here at the Home is all able to come to the table 3 times a day ex cept one very old man he is not able to We had the Grand Master Bro Black to stay all night with us at the Home Tuesday he is a fine fellow a young man with a great future before him Bro Courtney and his good wife are on a vacation for a few days We need a rain on the farm very badly Our vegetables oats corn and potatoes are suffering for rain We have had no rain for 4 weeks Hogs and cattle on the farms are looking good though The grass is getting short We had 2 girls to graduate from the Home this Term'of school young ladi es with a bright future before them they have gone from the Home out the world prepared to enter the battles of life It did us people at the Home good when Checotah I Lodge presented a ten dollar graduating check to the two girls It proves to us that Oddfellowship is always ready with Sympathy love and friend ship to give to them that prove worthy to receive it We have 6 boys and 4 girls still in the Home with 42 old people Over at Carmon in the I Home we have one hundred children ranging from one year old to 18 years old The health in the Home at Checotah is good except one boy that has lately had an operation for appendicitis doing fine at this time Well me and wife are more than satisfied with our new Home nothing to do but to eat and sleep I went to Lodge Tuesday night and saw Checo tah Lodge put on and confer the sec ond degree in good shape and to the credit of any Lodge and did eat cream and cake to my content Che cotah has a fine Lodge and a good Hall paid for and out of debt and money in their treasury a fine set ot officers and well up on their charges Checotah is a nice little city with a population of about two thousand 22 miles couth of Muskogee on the Railroad has two banks good schools and plenty of churches two highways This is the 4th week lor us in the I Home at Checo tah and we are beginning to want to see some old faces from Sallisaw anl Sequoyah county Tell one and all ot our friends and neighbors of Sallisaw and Sequoyah that we still think ol them and the many happy days we have spent together and most of all wife and I were so glad to see our old life long brother and sister's photograph in the Muskogee Phoenix rancis we
