stations ready to wait for voting tallies Tucson TV news departments will throw all the technology and staff they can afford at the elections Tuesday but it do much to speed up Pima notoriously slow election returns So unless the presidential race turns into a real squeaker probably know who the next president is before we have a hint about the Pima County Board of Supervisors race Pima County Elections Director Larry Bahill said the job of collecting and counting ballots is done as quickly as humanly possible under state law That means no meaningful results will be available until 10 pm probably later Bahill said a bit more machinery might speed things up a bit but not much tough stuff for the local TV news directors to swallow So much for the immediacy of TV In general though they agree with assessment The TV news collective answer is to use computers to speed up their end of the job as much as non-humanly possible KVOA-Channel 4 KGUN-Channel 9 and KOLD-Channel 13 will be hooked into the Secretary of computer system either directly by dedicated phone line or indirectly through The Associated regional election news wire system or both The Secretary of computer system is linked directly to county election headquarters throughout the state so results from Pima County will be available virtually at the same time through those sys 'ms as it would be directly from the Pima County election headquarters Beyond that KGUN and KVOA will be using a special computer program that dumps the results straight onto the screen without time-consuming retyping of the results into character generators (the devices that create the numbers on the TV screen) The problem of finding numbers to crunch and display remains So each station will be using experts to analyze and comment on the elections Brink Chipman of Channel 4 saying who his experts will be Ray Depa says Channel 9 will spend some time with Republican Richard Klein-dienst a former Nixon administration cabinet officer
