Staff Writer David Polan remembers a time when he didn't know anything about television except how toturn it on But when his father in Chicago jumped at the chance to buy a Tucson television station and asked him to run it Polan said lie thought the offer sounded like a fun change of pare always spent a lot of time in front of the television I thought it would be interesting to iry it from the other he said from his office at KPOL-TV Channel 40 The station went on the air in January 1984 Polan 35 and his father Julius Polan obtained a license from the Federal Communications Commission And then Polan a former criminalpersonal injury lawyer who had stopped practicing law to work in real estate moved to Tucson to try managing a TV station was something new and entirely different" Polan said He read everything lie could find on how to operate a television station He visited stations in other cities and lie asked a lot of questions about how things were done Then he researched the television market here to see what the other stations were doing Polan said lie found a strong spirit of competition between the network affiliates and between independents KZAZ (now KMSfM Channel 11) and KDTU-IV Channel 18 Public television station KUAT-1V Channel 6 was also holding its own in the race for viewers Polan said he also found Tropic Mdgazine Kathleen Turner Kathleen Turner poses in Playboy Wire Services Kathleen Turner co-star of the and "Jewel of the has refused doubles in her movie career for even the most dangerous scenes I was a tomboy" says Turner mother get me into a skirt very Turner be using any doubles in the May issue of Playboy magazine either where she appears in a new second foldout section called Playboy And it appears that her mother still is having trouble getting her into a skirt flows a station there many gigantic toy stores in town to buy advertising time he added Instead the 15-million-watt sta- tion went for adults by getting the rights to air a lot of syndicated suspense series and dramas like Bold Ones" and It has kept viewers by showing its cache of horror series like "Night Gallery" "Tales From the Dark and of course the flirtatious mistress of darkness Elvira and her "Movie trying to attract our piece of the audience and to hold onto it" lie said best thing you can do is find your sliare and keep it satis- fied" Polan combs the syndicated programs market for first-run shows lie hopes viewers are eager to watch And he also tries to keep the station up to date technologically When KVOA-TV Channel 4 started broadcasting in stereo KPOL made some adjustments to its equipment and went stereo too Thus far ratings have been poor for Channel 40 When the station conies in third among tlie three independents Polan said feel bad for about three minutes "We would like to be number one hut if providing service for viewers happy to he able to do that" Polan hopes to arrest constant money losses the station has suf fered by the end of this year But lie do it by selling the station nor ill he let KPOL "go (off the air) an optimist going to be a fight for 1 1 40 and 18 for a lie aid "We have to let Tueson know independent television is a quality too gently Gasdal and Pepe are the gold-digging Rita Walker done in a blond wig by Glenda Young and the I rench officer Captain DuJour who is delightfully portrayed by Tim
