Rockefeller says, "1 would welcome the opportunity to run for governor i of New York state should the Republican party choose me." Quickies NEW YORK (LTD -The news from Washington says the Labor Department plans to ask Congress for five million bucks next year to survey in detail how Americans spend th i money. This would be a study of "fast-changing buying habits." For its consumer price index, it now checks prices of 300 items ranging from baby food to whisky. But it's concerned about possible buyer swicheroos from, say, beauty parlors to home per-manents, nylon to dacron, apartment-renting to home-buying. I'm ready. Let the survey begin.

Mr. Quigg, you are an expert on how Americans spend? A I should say I'm an author ity on how one American spends spends and. ity on how one American spends spends and. Now, to be specific. A You interrupted.

I wasn't finished. Very well, go ahead. and spends and spends. That is your complete answer? sweats it out. Yes, 'that's it tersely put.

Just th Facts And that one American is? A Little old me. Suffering me. No opinions, please. Just ihe facts. Now, have you bought any baby food recently? A Well, yes, in a manner of speaking.

My daughter is no longer a baby she's a teen-ager. SVe asked me for some money for taoinuldrhs cmfwyp vbgkqjxz some teen-age food only yesterday. Teen-age food? A Yes. You get it at the soda fountain. All I had at the moment was a $20 bill.

She took it. When the returned, it was all gone. Twenty dollars? At a soda fountain? A She met a couple of friends tnd took them along. Big eaters. Tsk tsk.

Now, how about beauty parlors versus home per-manents? A In my case, its barber hops versus home haircuts. The way things are, I just can't afford barber shops anymore. I do it at home. Shaves Head Your wife cuts your hair for you? A No, we can't afford scissors and clippers. Here, let me remove my hat and show you what I do.

Shave your head! A-Precisely. If Yul Brynnr can do it, so can I. Every morning, when I shave, I go right on from my face to my scalp. The only cost for that kind of hair-do is a tiny bit more lather. All right.

Now are you an apartment-renter or a home-buyer? A I live in an apartment, but I haven't paid the rent since April. Not since April? What did you do with the money? A I paid my income tax to help make it possible for you to get five million bucks to conduct a survey on how I spend my money. And by the way, just how do you spend the money for a survey? Look, I'll do the Q-ing here and you do the A-ing. Now, do you have any other thoughts on how the American spends? A No, just that he spends and spends and. running and come back here and listen, you coward.

New W. Va. Law Causes Confusion CHARLESTON, W. A new West Virginia law requires a motorist to show proof of payment of personal property taxes on his car before he can obtain a license plate. Sounds simple, but it has the State Motor Vehicles Department tearing its collective hair.

Here are some of the things that have been received instead of a small card certifying payment of the tax: a $2 weekly offering od-viously intended for a church, a dog license receipt, a capitation tax receipt and a marriage Milton Merlin Calling Off Hunt For Cat By HAZEL K. JOHNSON UPI Hollywood Correspondent HOLLYWOOD (UPI) About those cats. Milton Merlin wants it known that he couldn't be more appreciative and thank-you-very-much-for-your-interest. But TV series or no TV series, CBS story editor Merlin is calling oof a nation-wide hunt for a cross eyed calico cat 10 days from now and that's all there is to it! "It's beginning to get a little out of hand," Merlin said in a low, confidential tone. "Do you know I've had telephone calls from newspaper editors who have cats? Calls all the way from Roanoke, West Virginia?" It all started when the usual Hollywood trained animal sources failed to turn up a cross-eyed feline of the variety needed in a story to be filmed as part of "The Millionaire" series, a tele-play titled "My Aunt's Cat, Ralph." According to the iriginal Jack Roche story the plot concerned a cat so ugly that its owner (a little old lady) fears the animal would be turned over, unwanted, to the nearest animal sh 1 1 upon her death.

So she wills it her last $1,000 for its care after her death. When the woman becomes the recipient of a million dollars just hours before she passes on Ralph turns into the only millionaire cat in the Everything went well to is point. It was only after the CBS publicity department launched a full-scale cat hunt (via news releases, letters to the editor, etc.) that Merlin began to get nervous. "They told them to contact me" he said. "Fortunately, the stories noted' that I'm allergic to cats and said to send a photo and description of the cat, not the animal itself." "I'm up to here in cat photographs," he explained "This business has pre-empted most of my time and I've got to get back to work." Merlin fears the worst is yet to come.

"They tell me I'm the guy who has to choose Ralph. That'll be some job." The story editor says he has a half dozen "likely candidates" in mind, including entries from Lima Ohio; San Antonio, Topeka, Pittsburgh, and "an awfully good one" from Roanoke. (The editor's, per chance?) "We'll still accept pictures for another 10 days, but after that we've got to call it quits. We start filming in August and what if our cat doesn't pass his screen test? We'd -have to get hold of another one fast," Merlin said. WRONG SUGGESTION LONDON (LTD One-legged prisoner Glyn Peters went to Wandsworth Hospital to get a new metal leg Wednesday.

Doctors put the artificial leg on and suggested he walk around to try it out. Peters walked out of the hospital and is still missing. By Ken Reynolds ton County held its monthly meet ing at the Polish Falcon Club in Donora, on Sunday, June 2 The meeting was called to or der by Squire Louis I. Quail, President, of the Association With the pledge to the flag. Other officers present were Al derman William Collins first-vice president of Monongahela; Squire Ralph Wise, second vice president of Clays vilte; Alderman Byron Coleman, treasurer of Mononga hela and Squire Ralph Weaver, secretary of Amity.

Association solicitors were present in the persons of Attorney Austin Murphy of Charleroi and Attorney Jess Costa of Bentleyville. Thorn as Terputic, Washington attorney, was appointed by the chair as one of the associations solicitors to fill a vacancy created by ihe resignation of William C. Porter. Attendance at the meeting was good and the secretary reported that the membership had more than doubled since January of this year, having a total of more than eighty members. Arrangements are being made to conduct a civil law school this coming fall at the County Court House.

The course will be sponsored by the Pennsylvania Department of Public Instruction. Among notables attending the meeting were Assistant District Attorney, Howard Carson; Chief County Dectective Hannah Johns; Coroner Farrell Jackson, and Blatch Cummins, the newly appointed County Commissioner. Austin Murphy made a report to the membership concerning routine business of the Association. Sgt. Trombetta, Pennsylvania State Police, in charge of the Belle Vernon Barracks, was the main speaker.

The next regular meeting will be held at the call of the president during the month of September. The Capitol Whirl United Press International The politicians on Capitol HiU and throughout the state are breathing a lot easier since Attorney General Thomas D. Mc-Bride ruled that no special session of the Legislature was necessary because of the unemployment compensation extension issue. A special session during an important election year would be as popular as a burst bee's nest at a picnic. Although the subjects to be taken up are outlined beforehand, floor debate is free and unlimited and the session could become a sounding board for all the ills, imagined and otherwise, of both parties.

Then, lawmakers have the election to think of. All of the members of the House of Representatives have their campaigning to worry about and the same applies to half of the Senate. Most of all, it is unlikely that Gov. George M. Leader would want a special session.

The governor has made the record on which he wants to campaign for the U.S. Senate. He does not want it beclouded by such extraneous issues as might crop up in a summer session, right before the election. A little-known fact came to light during an investigation of an accident which led to the burning of a $3,500 state automobile dur ing an out-of-state pleasure jaunt by Deputy Auditor General Alfred Novello. State' cars bear the no tation "for official use only" on their tags.

The one used by No vello did not. Plates without this notation are known as "confi dential plates" and are common ly used by state police detectives. state revenue agents and other investigators. Novello apparently latched on to a car with such a plate. He was on a trip with his wife to the Catskllls over the Memorial Day week end, author ized, according to Novello, by his cief Auditor General Charles C.

Smith. A short circuit resulted in a fire which destroyed the car. The state's so-called "conscience fund" is still receiving contributions periodically. The fund gets its name from usually-anonymous contributions sent in by persons who owe, or imagine they owe, the state some money. at.

Chariot Racer FlippedUnder Horses' Hooves HOLLYWOOD By VERNON SCOTT UPI Hollywood Correspondent ROME (UPI)-It's been 2,000 years since a chariot racer has been flipped under the hooves of runaway furses, but that is ex actly what happened to a Holly wood stuntman here during the shooting of "Ben Hur." Stuntman Joe Canutt took the spill during a particularly danger ous sequence that required horses chariot and all to leap over the wreckage of a demolished enemy chariot. It went like this: The 16-acre set, representing an ancient arena, was filled with 5,000 Italian extras, mutinous about having to stand in the blazing sun. A chicken-wire fence surrounded the set to keep the actors from disappearing, only to turn up later to collect their pay checks.

In the center of the chariot track a phalanx of Italian assistant directors kept shouting instructions into a public address system. Not once during the broiling afternoon, except for the brief time when the cameras were rolling, did the zalous assistant stop howling at the sweating, thirsty throng in the stands. Plans Difficult Trick While the extras were moved from place to place to keep the assistants happy, young Canutt and a crew of Hollywood stunt men (led by his father Yakima Canutt) planned the difficult trick. Five hours of preparation were necessary for the proper placement of the ramp and damaged chariots. Three cameras were set up and the track watered down to prevent dust.

Several times the horses were run over the debris. Each time they cleared the jump perfectly. Finally, tensely, everything was ready. Canutt, wearing Roman robes mounted his chariot down track. Other chariot teams took their places and the cameras rolled.

The horses charged toward the stunt site and all hell broke loose. Instead of taking the iumo smoothly, Canutt's chariot rock. eted off the ramp straight into the air, flipping the stuntman un der the flying feet of his four white horses and within inches nf the heavy, whirling wheels of the chariot. Silence Is Noted For perhaps five seconds ther was a deafening stillness. Even the unhappy extras held their breaths.

Miraculously Canutt staseerprl to his feet, unhurt except for a minor rash in his chin and a fnv bruised ribs. Seeing this the Italians screamed approval. The microphone passed quickly from hand to hand amone the assist ants who heaped praise on Canutt. tanutt was rushed to the MGM hospital at the Cinecitta studio, fnr a checkup. But father Yakima was less upset about Joe's spill than he was about failure of the stunt.

"This means we'll have fn rp. write the race sequence a little," he said, scratching his chin. it doesn call for the man to be tossed out of the chariot. Nm we'll have to rig another scene snowing him climbing back onto the chariot while tlie horses continue to run full blast." Las Vegas Hotel Plans 'Skyscraper' Addition LAS VEGAS Npv mvn Construction of an 18-story addition to the Dunes Hotel on Las Vegas' guttering "Strip" will be gin mis summer. The building would tower above all other Nevada buildings and would include facilities fnr vention hall seating 1,500 per sons, puis display rooms.

A recent $20 payment came from a rather unusual source from a Catholic mission with an accom panying note which said merely mai nas been "asked to forward a conscience debt that is owed to the state of Pennsylva nia." Some payments in the nast nave been made by priests acting as intermediaries for rerjpntnnt confessors. One $50 contribution came in this manner. State Property and Supplies Secretary Andrew M.
