BEST AVAILABLE CCPY Movies3D Television5D Tucson pv Citizen JLJ Focus Friday January 4 1985 By JEFF SMITH CltUca Tclevkloa Zk JiM Starting tomorrow be more TV programs than ever when Tucson starts watchin next Monday First episodes of such classics as "The Mary Tyler Moore "Andy and "The Rifleman" will air then Meanwhile KPOL' Channel 40 has been ironing out some audio difficulties and easing onto the airwaves in a limited way with an evening-only schedule of live satellite sports and dead syndicated re-runs If all goes well Channel 40 will run its first full day of programming commencing at 7 am tomorrow (Program listings (or the new station a begin today on Page 7D in the Saturday schedule) As a result you will be able to watch three UHF TV stations in addition to the five VHF available here and myriad cable channels available to paying subscribers The third station is Spanish language station KTVW Channel 52 out of Phoenix KPOL is an independent commercial station that will feature off-network reruns old movies syndicated series and Phoenix Suns basketball games UHF Continued Page 4D "What you have to understand is that a UHF station runs on steam" Joked Allison He then went on to say he was senous So heavy-duty Is the power demand of such an operation that considerable heating and cooling and condensation and so forth takes place Steam At any rate about five hours after launch Monday the transmitter blew and KDTU went off the air It came back on another five hours later and is cooking along now at about 25 percent power while awaiting arrival of some replacement parts As to the various other technical and human foibles in evidence as KDTU takes its first wobbly steps Allison says that aside from the usual de-bugging necessary during the shake-down cruise of any mechanical vehicle there is the issue of human endurance and fallibility to consider "May I say err is human to forgive divine' Allison "Would that be appropriate in this Owing to the initial blunders certain of the advertised specials available to KDTU customers last Monday for New Eve and will be repeated nything as complex as building and firing-up a television station is fraught with the opportunity for Law True to the laws which govern such thing? the commencement of programming on newest TV stations KDTU Channel 18 and KPOL Channel 40 has been hit andor miss As this is written KDTU has gone on the air And off And on And on in ways that may make viewers wonder why they bothered In one Paul New spy flick 'villain died vas resur-1 several jmes by tech-cians who jpt running wrong reels after station eaks I think maybe this was he Spy Who Came In and Out In and Out From the Cold" KDTU program director F3d Allison explained the woes as inherent to the shakedown process Citlzon illustration by Edward Stiles a how to hook up your TV for new stations By EDWARD STILES Citizen Statf Writer buy 300-ohm ribbon wire for the antenna lead-in he advised UHF wavelengths are extremely short and ribbon wire often picks up interference Instead use 70-ohm coax which is shielded and pick up stray unwanted signals If you already have a VHF antenna you can hook both the UHF and VHF antennas to the same coax lead-in by using a coupling transformer You will need one at both ends of the line And if your set has twin terminals the coupling transformer must be connected to the TV with a short piece of nbbon wire Keep this lead as short as possible Dudley said because it is not shielded and can introduce unwanted signals UHF antennas are priced between about $12 and $60 with $25 to $35 being the average Expect to pay between $50 and $70 for the complete setup including coax (which costs between 11 cents and 16 cents per foot) coupling transformers and antenna Finally if the experimental type you might try making your own antenna indoors or outdoors by using coat hangers pieces of wire and aluminum foil what Dudley does But he advise this unless you know what doing If you do tinker with your own design you will be following the grand tradition of UHF antenna design which Dudley noted has advanced as much from the school as from theoretical design UHF signals as he said are unpredictable gram manager at KDTU Channel 18 Many viewers threw them away because they need them when Tucson had no UHF stations If yours is missing worry Many Circle stores soon will be selling these little loop antennas for 98 cents Allison said Also check your outdoor antenna Many VHF antennas come with yagi or bow tie UHF antennas already attached Dudley said If yours and reception is poor time to head for the electronics store But first take a look at the antenna connections on your set They will be either twin terminal type which look like two screws or coax connectors Coax connectors look like small threaded rods with a hole in the center for a bayonet-style connector You need to know which kind you have in order to buy the right connectors for your UHF antenna Dudley recommended electronics stores instead of those that advertise antenna installations because the job will be much cheaper if you can install the antenna yourself When buying an antenna be misled by beauty he said A gold-painted sparkling antenna do any better than the unpainted variety Find a shop that allows customers to take the antenna home for a trial Before installing it permanently take it up on the roof connect it to the TV and hold it up by hand to see if it works well in your location Dudley advised But not always Donald Dudley Jr who is known as the at the University of electrical engineering department and whose knowledge of UHF signal propagation is of the integral calculus sort said UHF signals may be stronger at some Tucson locations than the VHF signals are "If I were dealing with UHF I would be more inclined to put up an outdoor antenna than with VHF but the reason hedging on it is that it may not turn out that way in a given So before rushing off to a store to buy an antenna check a couple of things first Set up your television so that it will receive the UHF stations and give your present antennas a try first Dudley advised For some people this can be done at the flick of a switch Others will have to play around with tuners that usually are concealed behind a panel (check your TV manual) And those who own older TVs may find that they have any UHF capabilities at all To receive UHF on older VHF-only sets a block converter is needed These sell for $2995 at Electronic City and are available at other electronics stores They go between the antenna and the set Once the UHF station is on the screen get the best picture you can by fooling around with the little loop or bow tie antenna that came with your set if you can find it of the great mysteries is what happens to these small loop joked Fred Allison pro ow good is your UHF television reception? A few months ago that was a trivial question among most Tucson TV viewers But with three of eight stations now broadcasting in the UHF region viewers without good UHF capabilities are missing nearly half the fun Cable subscribers are the best off of course Those with Cox Cable can tune in good-quality signals just by punching the Channel 18 40 or 52 buttons on their tuners In about six weeks Jones Intercable subscribers also will be getting high-quality UHF signals Jones is upgrading its equipment to offer UHF on channels 3 5 and 8 Two cable services now on channels 3 and 5 will be moved to other channels higher up the band Both Cox and Jones emphasized that the new channels are additions to the systems and that none of the present channels will be dropped Those without cable will have to depend on the vagaries of UHF signal propagation which best can be described as being unpredictable As a rule of thumb the VHF (very high frequency) channels used by the major networks are easier to receive with indoor antennas than are UHF (ultra high frequency) stations story a success proves delightful miss SALOC show By MICHELINE KEATING For the Tucson Citizen is a fresh and green today as it was 43 years ago when it began its long prestigious career as a Rodgers and Hammer-stein musical In its long life there been has scarcely week when Review Citizen photo by Xavier Gallegos Big brother Fred Killion (left) with Kevin Carney By CONNIE LONG Citizen Staff Writer Kevin Carney has planned a definite direction for his life The dream includes a college education which he hopes will lead to a job as a sportscaster for a major network After spending a few hours with the 16-year-old the plans seem very realistic Carney is a success story A participant in the Big Brother Big Sister program for the last couple of years the young man says he has turned his life around and now knows what he has to do to enjoy life and become productive His friend and mentor Fred Killion takes very little credit for his little confidence always had potential He has needed support and help but now good friends and getting something out of the relationship That seems to be the trick to making the Big Brother Big Sister program work think they have to do something more than they normally do says executive director Chip Tullgren have the misconception that they have to have lots of time and add lots of frills trips to Mount Lemmon or a day at Old Tucson That simply is not the case to stop you from asking a kid to come over and popping some C6rh and watching a ball game together or letting him help tune up the The program involves volunteers who have something to share with a child adult companionship attention and friendship necessities for children who are for some reason or other not 1 getting the guidance they need and deserve Tullgren says there is a waiting Say in Say and of My Few musicals have hit the eye with so many popular tunes It is a big production with a large chorus of singers and dancers and a cast capable of creating recognizable people who can sing from adequately to well and who can dance with gusto The first act concludes with a ballet interlude that reprises the story line Among the performers I particularly liked Katie infectious Ado Annie (Cowhey keeps getting better and better all the time) Karen Aunt Eller also was well-drawn and Gloria Centofanti made an infectious Laurey who quite make up her mind about love Timothy Fink is an excellent Curly and Richard Wojnowski scores as Will Curly loves Laurey and Will loves Annie but they do not always use much sense in going about it Dean Elzinga brings an excellent voice and good characterization to his villain Jud Fry Daniel Gunther is a joy as an itinerartt Persian salesman Mike Minnis and Kim Ashby-Worsham were effective in the dream ballet Harriett Cowhey as usual kept her orchestra in full cry Technical kudos are well-deserved for Russell lighting Georgia colorful period costumes and the scenery provided by the San Bernardino Civic Light Opera Scenic Studio If there is anyone Who never has seen a production of they should not bypass this one If musicals are your cup of tea miss this one Even if you like the uniquely American offering go anyway will be presented at 8 nightly tonight through Sunday at 2 pm Sunday at 8 pm Jan 19 and 20 and at 2 pm Jan 20 All performances are in the Community Center Music Hall a it has not been playing somewhere in the world on professional stages and college campuses as smalltown amateur fledglings and as massive community projects As late as 1975 it was playing simultaneously in 60 different countries The original Broadway production ran for 5 years: 2248 shows in a row Last night the Southern Arizona Light Opera Company offered it as the second production of its season and it proved to be one of better productions Under Richard skillful knowledgeable direction it is a fast-moving well-sung and well-acted performance that belies the youth and semi-amateur status of its performers It is as delightful an evening of musical comedy as anyone could ask for Based upon Lynn drama Grow The about young love in Indian Territory at the turn of the century and given one of Richard most memorable scores there is scarcely a song in it that is not now a standard it can stand tall straight and durable beside frenetic rock roll It tells a simple tale about young love that has some difficulties in setting sail maintaining its course and recognizing home port when it is reached There are mixups and misunderstandings and a shooting at the frenzied climax all buoyed by such now familiar standards as "Oh What a Beautiful Surrey With the Fringe on Will then stopped for a bite to eat even- talk about our girl-problems now that change no matter how old you are" Killion joked Kevin knows a lot about ball scores and things like that which interest Carney says although he plays basketball on the Junior Varsity Team at Santa Rita High School he is realistic about his chances of using his athletic ability to get to college He knows he is going to be too short to play college basketball and has decided to try to keep his grades high so he will be eligible for an academic scholarship With four sisters and two brothers and his father remarried in Kansas he suspects he will need outside help When he asked for a Big Brother he said he was looking for someone outside of his family because he knew it was to his advantage and would help out at home too Has the big brother program suffered because of recent stories about child abuse around the country? Tullgren says not chances are really slim to none that this might he says in a while we have a child who has a drastic change in behavior we call the child in and have him talk to a counselor One recent case was a boy who reacted negatively because the man chosen as a big brother was so much like his father and that Currently there are 150 men and 160 women serving as volunteers in the program and a waiting list almost as large is active The major excuse I hear Is have the Tullgren says some of the busiest people in Tucson have little brothers and sisters What they do is share something they would do anyway with a child and then feel rewarded themselves" list of 120 youths who they would like to match up with an adult It definitely is not an easy task he says because the wrong adult is worse than none at all Boys asking for Big Brothers are between 8 and 16 years of age and do not have a father in the home Girls asking for Big Sisters are between 6 and 16 years of age and have either or both parents in the home but need the support of an adult t- Killion who is 35 years old and single works as a counselor in the Big Brothers program and has devoted at least one afternoon or evening a week to Carney have a lot in common and what I was looking Killion says wanted someone who shared my interest in sports and Kevin fills the On a recent evening the two spent a couple of hours at the Tucson Athletic Club playing basketball and Jt-.
