Channel 9 has sometime between one day-and a year and a half to find a solution Of course one possibility Vaughan said is that no solution exists But this is not likely KGUN should be able to find another open channel to use as a translator that or pay to have everybody on the northwest side move downtown where the signal is sharp i This latter of course is a matter of scant concern to the folks in the communications office at the Catholic Diocese They are understand tickled and excited about getting into the TV biz Robert Nordmeyer a nine-year with the local diocese in the educational and informational programs of an ecumenical nature in addition to religious programming Nordmeyer expanded upon this stressing that the station will seek to fill gaps in community service programming and that it will not administer large doses of Catholic dogma in a heavy-handed manner Nordmeyer said too that while Channel 18 will be a commercially licensed station plans are to finance the expected $500000-a-year operation through foundation grants donations and user fees rather than by selling commercial time Obviously it will take the folks who operate Channel 18 a certain while to feel their way along and arrive at the best and most comfortable format But Nordmeyer stressed that this getting-to-know-you procedure will lean heavily on gauging community needs as expressed by community members themselves Obviously the diocese and the station will have final say as to which of those needs are met by Channel 18 and it likely that we can expect to see our need for more jiggle shows met on this frequency but as Nordmeyer describes his and the hopes and dreams Channel 18 begins to sound like an interesting amalgam of KUAT a couple of public-access channels from Cox Cable and maybe some of those Sunday afternoon things from 4 9 and 13 the ones with Marlon Perkins or Pat Boone We should not be so naive as to assume that the Catholic message will not be given flight on Channel airwaves but the awareness of that should be sufficient proof against unwanted indoctrination The Catholic Church has built more than impressive fiscal resources over its years of teaching and community service: It has learned how to teach and how to serve all manner of folks without scaring the hell or the heaven out of them Leave the brimstone to Jerry Falwell: The Catholics show more sophistication than that Which hints to me at least that there will be programs and services of small-c catholic interest on Channel 18 and that this will be a welcome addition to the local TV dial for some time that this was in the wind For one thing the application and licensing procedure with the Federal Communications Commission requires that matters of such importance be accessible to the public And for another KGUN Channel 9 has been using UHF Channel 18 as a translator to bring a stronger and better signal to the northwest area of the community So Channel 9 has had considerable interest in the progress of the local diocese's application and now that the FCC has given final approval for the diocese to commence construction on its station KGUN will have to shop around for
