a '4 iff 4- I Spokane Daily Chronicle, Wednesday, Oct. 27, 1971. 3 WSU Cougar Crew to Promote PULLMAN, Wash. Washington Slate Universityi Cougar Crew was to visit Spokane today to promote Saturdays homecoming celebration. The crew representing students during the celebration this week Includes Kay Carstens Duskin, Reardan, John Gomez, Connell, Karen Fwis, Wash and Sonja Wingard, Tacoma, Wash.

The crew will preside over functions normally attended by a homecoming queen, and will serve as basons between the community and the university, Paul Sunderland, homecoming committee chairman, said. The pre-game rally will be tomorrow night at Rogers Field. After the rally a serpentine of cars will wind its way to the downtown area for the annual chariot races and other games on a section of Main Street between Kamiaken and Grand. Some of the stores have agreed to remain open during the evening. The crew members didnt all agree whether the elimination of a queen contest was good, but they did feel that the crews function was worthwhile.

Miss Wingard, a sophomore, said: Im not one of those people who think queen contests are a waste of time. This is totally different than a homecoming queen, so maybe next year we can have both. Gomez, a freshman, said: "I think this is better than a queen contest, but next year theyll probably have to find a new way of selecting the crew." The four also will be appearing at several luncheons, all of the rallies and at the Homecoming game, Oct. 30, in Spokane against the University of Oregon Ducks.
