(FLVCO) North County Times B-4 TUESDAY, Juy 9, 2002 4 KILLED Continued from B-l MEMOIRS Continued from B-l a medical examiners investigator said. It was unknown if alcohol played a role in the crash, LaCroix said. Police are asking anyone with information in the case to contact him at (760) 435-4835. The CIIP also reported arresting 169 drivers on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol on the roadways during this years July Fourth holiday weekend, Konstantin said. In 2000, there were 91 arrests for people suspected of driving intoxicated.

Statewide, this year there were 63 deaths, not including the Oceanside death, and 1,738 DUI arrests, Konstantin said. In 2000, there were 38 deaths and 1,486 DUI arrests. The CIIP did not include 2001 statistics because the reporting period was too short last year for comparison, officials said. The Ford was traveling southbound on North Santa Fe Avenue, when it entered the intersection at Mesa Drive, LaCroix said. The driver of the Pontiac was going northbound on North Santa Fe Drive and tried to make a U-turn into the southbound lanes when the accident occurred, he said.

The Grand Ams driver described only as a Latino man who is approximately 40 years of age with a medium build fled the scene after the crash, LaCroix said. The Fords driver and another passenger were taken to Scripps Memorial Hospital, La Jolla with moderate injuries, he said. Jimenez-Becerra was a chef and is survived by a wife, It was just a favorite of everybodys, Huenergardt said of the recipe, which was printed just as Opal Huenergardts mother had written it. Paying Tribute Working with the elderly has been particularly rewarding, Sunrich said. The stories continue to absolutely fascinate me, she said.

What someone has done with their life and how they have gone about making their life work is, to me, incredibly courageous. Its extremely powerful. For Gillin, the satisfaction came in being able to tell his stories. The most rewarding part about it for me personally was somebody listened to me, and they really listened, Gillin said. They were interested in what I had to say.

Cheri Huenergardt said the books provide an opportunity to pay tribute to someone whomight not otherwise be recognized. She said she found satisfaction in seeing her grandmother-in-law receive the acknowledgment she deserved. She got rewarded for all of her years of hard work just being there and supporting everybody through everything that they had done, she said. She realized she did have an interesting life. It was good.

StoryArts offers other services such as children and teen memoirs, as well as community projects. The consortium can be reached at (760) For Rancho Bernardo resident Hugh Gillin, the spark for putting his life story in print came from a newspaper article on the subject. I was comfortable with the integrity of the people doing it, said Gillin, who was wounded in World War II combat, went on to work in the oil industry and ultimately ended up in Hollywood as a character actor. His book was finished about six months ago, with copies costing about $100 each. Gillin said he put it together for his children and grandchildren more than for himself.

Im not selling this down at the bookstore, he said. This is for my grandkids. Sunrich said she found Gillins book particularly fascinating because of the items he had for it photos from the field during World War II and crisp archives from his days in Hollywood. Hes the guy who ended up going to Hollywood, and you can just see how he pulled it off, she said. His book includes a CD of his favorite musicians, Duke Ellington and Count Basie.

Holocaust survivor Horst Cahn included a CD in his book, as well, Sunrich said. It contains an interview done by his son, who works in radio, which covers his survival of Auschwitz and the loss of his family. Another StoryArts client, Cheri Huenergardt of Vista, put a book together in 2000 to celebrate the 90th birthday of her husbands grandmother. Opal Huenergardt. She and Sunrich said they compiled about four hours of videotaped interviews with Opal Huenergardt.

The book also contains messages from family members written specifically for the book. Some of the great-grandchildren submitted drawings instead. Also among the items is Opal Huenergardts recipe for banana nut bread, passed down from her mother. The imbongi would commit to memory the events of people and the tribe, the village and the nation, and they would be passed along to future generations, she said. Sunrich sees StoryArts role in a similar light.

I believe thats what we are trying to bring back to our culture. And we are very for- tunate to have technology to help us deliver and pass on these incredible life stories, because its the stories in our own families and our own communities that inspire us the most. Capturing a lifetime The creation of the books and videos can be an adventure, StoryArts clients say. For Lee and Ivana Lyttle of Solana Beach, the inspiration for their familys book of history came from a project done in 1969. When my parents had their 50th wedding anniversary, we did a book for that, Lee Lyttle said.

When the Lyttles met with Sunrich about creating a family history book, Sunrich said she was overwhelmed with the amount of information the couple had collected, including 45 life stories solicited from relatives. I walked in and looked at all these boxes of archives and I think I said to her, Oh my goodness, youre going to want two volumes for this book, Sunrich said. And they said no, its going to be in one volume. The couple said the project took about two years to complete; the family held a party Nov. 18 when the book was finished.

At 915 pages, it weighs 8 pounds, Lee Lyttle said. The book is a remarkable accomplishment, according to Sunrich. It makes sense because it is the family tome, Sunrich said. In some ways, it wouldve ruined it to be in two volumes, and they could have easily done that, the way this particular story falls together. This is their legacy.

The central core of our work is to value everyones story as important, and to be passed on in really quality books or videos, said Lois Sunrich, director of StoryArts. The group began in 1990, as a 10-year project to profile womens lives. By 1995, group members saw a possibility of providing a similar service to other segments of the community. We started with elders because (they) are in this very similar position that women are, Sunrich said.

They can be hidden in a culture. The consortium of publishing and video artists involved in StoryArts has grown, and now includes graphic artists, transcribers, a bindery and a printer. Each project takes from six months to two years to complete. The process includes collecting stories videotaping, audio taping and transcribing them. I take the transcription and I shape it into the text that will go into the book, leaving the clients words as is, Sunrich explained.

We do not edit or change their voice in any way. Sunrich then goes through the family archives and chooses the pieces the client wants. All the information is assembled into a three-ring binder, which then goes to the graphic artist or video maker. Then the team works together to create the story artwork. From there, it goes to the printer and binder.

Ive dedicated my life to helping people understand the power of story and keeping history alive, Sunrich said. Recording a culture One source of her inspiration is found in South African leader Nelson Mandelas autobiography, Long Walk to Freedom, in a section that describes the role of the tribal storyteller, known as the im-bongi (pronounced im-bon-gee). The praise singer was the one who followed people around with a drum and sang their praises, all day long, she explained. And when the council met, the imbongi was like a poet. He would note the events of the council meeting and at the end, make it into a poetic story that he would play out with his drums.

And that was the way of recording this important event. pending too much tune sh.tvtng, plucking 6c fixing Well, don't1 The IPL ll.ur Removal System can ike your hte easier FDA approved for pernnnent hair reduction In just minutes, iv ciMxlhve to umvitited ur mywlure1 Bikini Underarm (per treatment) For a limited time only s150 fcc liiso Hurt PhntifrruuTunnn ti Lcur Sim Ainugt Rtjwir (no linen frnii 1 Buim for HrnJun (760) 72G-6451 2023 W.
