THE TIMES RECORD, TROY, N. MONDAY EVENING, MAY 1947. i BY JOE REtCBTLKB Associated Press Sports Writer It-began 1 to look today like wise Sam Bread on, president of the Louis Cardinals, had been read- Ing up on Redbird pennant history he made that Harry Walker for Ron Northey deal with the Philadelphia Phillies Saturday. If he did thumb through the baseball record books he probably discovered that nearly every year Cards won a flag, they were juded by a refugee from Philadelphia who had joined the club earlier in the season. Northey, a hard-hitting outfielder, made a brilliant deb'ut yesterday ivhen he slugged two home runs and a single and batted in four runs to lead the Cards to a victory in the second game of a doubleheader with the Braves at Boston.

Nortehy's big bat plus powerful shutout pitching by Harry (The Cat) Brecheen, 1946 World Series- hero, was chiefly responsible for the snapping of a nine- game losing streak by the Cards. Braves had hung the ninth straight defeat on the Redbirds by coming from behind with a four- run seventh inning to nip them 4-3 in the opener. In the only other National League games, the Phillies clouted Cincinnati twice. 5-3 and 10-5 to TROY HIGH TRACKMEN CAPTURES HONORS IN SCHENECTADY MEET Five Troy High School trackmen copped places in the first novice and open track meet at Union College 'conducted Saturday by the Schenectady Board of Education and-sanctioned by the State Public High School Athletic Association. In the open 100-yard dash, Bob "7 3 i ilu Millhouse of Troy and John Trotter were third and fourth, respectively. In the open, 1000-yard event, James Coles placed fourth. Bobby Feller discovered that he can't work with only one day's rest The great Cleveland righthander, who last Friday Wanked the Boston Red Sox with only one hit, was rushed in by Manager Lou Boudreau to protect a one-run lead in the seventh inn- Ing against Washington. But the Isats climbed all over him for four runs to win 6-3 and hung a defeat on Feller. They! also ended Bob's of 29 consecutive scoreless innings. The second game of the doubleheader at Cleveland was postponed because of rain. The Chicago White Sox increased their American lead to a game and a.

half by -winning two squeakers from the Philadelphia' Athletics Athletics 8-7 and 1-0. Showing a semblance of their '46 form, the Red Sox swept a doubleheader from the Browns at St Louis. 3-2 and 8-1. Tommy Fine, 29- year-old Texas rookie, pitched five hit ball to win his first major league game in the nightcap. Bobby Doerr, with a double and two-run homer accounted for all Boston's runs in the opener.

He scored on two fly balls. Detroit and the New York Yankees played a 2-2 tie at Briggs' Stadium, in a game ended by rain at the end of six innings. Hal Newhouser was leading 2-1 when Joe DIMaggio' belted for a double tying run on a single by Snuffy Rain washed out the scheduled contests between Chicago and New Tork at the Polo Grounds and Pittsburg and Brooklyn at Ebbets Field. Although he was nipped a half- inch in the broad jump at 21 feet, seven inches, Francis Lound of Oscoda, again was the big noise for the tracksters as he led a tight parade of R.P.I, men to the tape in the 100-yard dash with Ben Marshall and Dick Sherman chasing him home. Sherman also won the 220 low hurdles and Marshall copped the 220 dash in 0:23.7 to account for nine points. John Bundschuh raced the quar- tei in 0:51.3 for first place while Jack Eielman grabbed a second in the half mile, one of the few events taken by Rochester. "Clip" Clapp and John Burdick ran one-two for the Engineers in the mile and Jimmy Robinson continued his winning ways in the two-mile, coming from behind on the last lap. "Red" Precious copped the 120- yard high hurdles for the Engineers.

Negro plans to defend his crownicame home with the winning run. The games were featured by some brilliant fielding plays especially in the outfield, where Mazgay and Majorki made sparkling catches. Joe Aliperto, Albany shortstop, had a bad day, however, and established some kind of a record by booting his first six fielding chances without an assist or a putout in between. Mike Rolla gained the decision over Russ Needham in the opener for his first victory of the season due largely to some great fielding support and some inopportune boots by Albany. Two Huns In First.

Elmira scored two runs in the first inning of the opener. Bachman was safe on Aliperto's first error, Lutz doubled him to third and Majorki scored him with a drive into right with Lutz moving to third from where he scored a minute later when Sabatella missed May's throw on Wood's hot grounder. Albany tallied its lone run of the game in the second as Mazgay doubled and came all the way home when McClune made a wild throw on Aliperto's grounder. An error by May at third on Majorka's grounder. Wood's long fly and Aliberto's boot of Ignasiak's grounder gave the Pioneers their third run in the fifth and they tallied their finale in the sixth when McClung reached first on Aliperto's bobble.

Moved to second on Baich's secrifice and went to third when Aliperto erred on Rolla's grounder and scored on infield grounder. Sensational Eighth. A sensational backhand stop by Bachmann of Mayhew's sizzling grounder that was turned into a double play after Sabatella had walked with none out in the eighth blasted the Senators' last chance to get back in the ball game. Albany contributed to what turned out to be a deciding run in the second game that saw George Stohs gain the victory a relief role with Sal Cuttitta charged with the loss after both Christensen and Rushe had seen action for the Senators. Bob Doyle, who started for the Pioneers, was removed when he developed a streak of wildnesa in the sixth.

Automatic Triple. Elmira scored in the first when Brevold threw his glove at the ball and stopped it on Wood's grounder over second after Majorki had walked. The play went as an automatic triple for Wood with Majorki wnvpfl hnme frnm first. Thf pioneers scored again in the fourth when Sertich singled, Schuktz walked and Bach'man singled with May making a wild throw in a rundown play to admit Sertich after he had been trapped between third and the plate. Doyle walked Ganss and Mazgay to start the sixth, then Henry bunted against Stohs and Aliperto's single brought in both runs to tie the score.

Ignaskiak walked to start the seventh for Elmira, McClung flied out. then Sertich hit one against the left field barrier and Ignasiak Buffalo, with 1,152. Eich, Roily Graff's superb relief pitch- inb enabled Rensselaer Poly's baseball team to even its season record at 2-2 Saturday at Northfield, Vt, by trimming Norwich, 9-4. With the Engineers leading, 5-4, and none out in the fourth, Graff replaced starter Bob Terhune who allowed all six Norwich hits, two in that frame. Graff struck out the side, gave up no hits in six full innings and set down ten batters on strikes before the finish.

R.P.I. banged out four' runs in the first frame on two hits and three bases on balls, wildness of Norwich hurlers costing heavily all the way through. Tom McCombs' single chased home the winning run the fourth and the Engineers added three "insurance" markers in the fifth. R.P.I, plays host to Rochester on Wednesday at 4:15 p.m. at Hawkins Stadium and meets Siena on the same diamond on Saturday.

It would be difficult to convince the slim crowd of 400 who turned out for Saturday's World Professional Tennis League finals at thfc armory that anyone but Frankie Kovacs of Oakland, is the nation's No. 1 racquet swinger on current form. While Kovacs' winning doubles partner, Bobby Rigga is holder of the pro crown, the web-footed champion defaulted in the singles first round and sat it out as Kovacs chalked up his third consecutive Tennis League tourney triumph. Kovacs' victory in the finals came at expense of sleepy-eyed Welby VanHorn of Fountain' City, 8-10, 6-2, 6-2.

Big Frankie needed a set to get his terrific forehand and backhand shots under complete control, but once he found the range, VanHorn could have packed his racquet and gone back to Tennessee. The final scores were indicative of the power and finesse in Kovacs' mighty right arm and" he impressed the gallery by his amazing court covering ability, deft touch on drop shots and variety in addition to sheer could get to the net, of services power. When he VanHorn angled off several winners and his forehand produced points but Kovacs had things under control after the initial set, breaking Welby's service when he really wanted a game. Fine Doubles, The doubles produced the tournament's finest and fastest tennis with Kovacs and Riggs overpowering VanHorn and Wayne Sabin of Reno, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3. If was in this match that Kovacs demonstrated his superiority to Riggs, who ran like a scared rabbit despite reports of an injured foot.

All four finalists spanked the ball with severity off the green canvas floor, but Kovacs had the losers shaking their heads by the sheer brilliance of his net game as well as his bullet returns of service.
