Mary Hemingway, 78, the wife of writer Ernest Hemingway, left most of her $2 million to $3 million estate to charities such as the United Negro College Fund, NAACP Legal Defense Fund, World Wildlife the Audobon Society and the American Museum of Natural History in New York.

But she also gave personal items to her granddaughters except Mariel. Hemingway who died Nov. 27 at the age of 78, left her husband's original manuscripts to the John F. Kennedy Library in Boston, per agreement with Jacqueline Onassis.

Hope digs Bob Hope helped with the shoveling honors at the groundbreaking for an 81-bed addition to the Motion Picture and Television Country House and Hospital in Los Angeles. "At my age, it's a bit disconcerting to be handed a shovel and told to start digging," said Hope, 83. Also on hand for the ceremony were Charlton Heston, Janet Leigh, Roddy McDowell and Walter Matthau. "The Motion Picture Country House and Hospital is the one place out here that makes me proudest of being a member of this industry said Hope, who donated $1 million to the hospital's capital fund drive in October. The shovel used by Hope, Heston and Leigh was the same one used by Jean Hersholt, Mary Pickford, Robert Young and Ronald Reaganat the first building ground breaking in 1941.

Ms. Women South African dissident Winnie Mandela and Canadian author Margaret Atwood are the first non-Americans to be make Ms. magazine's women-of-the-year list. Mandela also was chosen to receive the first annual International Simoi.e de Beauvoir Award for "giving passionate and fearless voice to the silent suffer ing of South Africa." Also honored by the magazine were Tyne Daly and bharon Gless of "Cagney Jan Kemp, the University of Georgia instructor who challenged favored athletes at the school- Darlene Nicgorski, a nun convicted for her work in the sanctuary movement; Sarabeth Eason, 11, who was expelled from her Catholic school for signing a pro-abortion newspaper ad- and Maryland's senator-elect, Barbara Mikulski. Also on the list are singer Dolly Parton, Mary Frances Berry of the Commission on Civil Rights; North Pole explorer Ann Bancroft, businesswoman Linda Wachner and Vicki Frankovich, president of the flight attendants union..
