E-4 THE SUN-TELEGRAM Oct. 26, 1975 "Nebraska explosion rips Colorado, 63-21 Big Eight ned Kansas State in Big Eight Conference football Saturday. The 5-foot-10, 200-pound Brown, filling in for injured Tiger tailback Tony Galbreath. flashed six yards in the opening period to cap an 82-yard Missouri drive after Kansas State had taken a 3-0 lead. In the third quarter, after his third-down runs helped set up Missouri's second touchdown, Brown rambled 27 yards through a sagging Kansas State defense for his second score.

Missouri's victory, spearheaded by Browns 141 rushing yards on 21 carries, boosted the Tigers' season record to 5-2 and their Big Eight mark to 2-1 Okla. LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) Scott Burk and Robert Turner each ran for two touchdowns, lifting Oklahoma State to a surprisingly easy 35-19 Big Eight football victory Saturday over Kansas. Burk, who started the season as the Cowboys' No. 3 quarterback, romped eight yards early in the second period to put Oklahoma State ahead for good and added his other TD on a seven-yard jaunt in the third.

Turner jammed one yard into the line for the Cowboys' first six points soon after the start of the game, played before a homecoming crowd of 44,860. Turner made his second touchdown for the Cowboys late in the third quarter with a twoyard burst that capped a 78yard drive. X- LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) Vince Ferragamo passed for two touchdowns and John O'Leary ran for two Saturday, powering Nebraska's fourthranked Cornhuskers to a 63-21 Big Eight Conference football victory over a lOth-ranked Colorado team that was plagued by penalties and turnovers. Colorado scored first when quarterback Dave Williams romped 74 yards on the third play from scrimmage.

But from then on, the Buffs could do little right as eight Colorado turnovers led to six Nebraska touchdowns. After the first Buff score, Nebraska, 7-0, tallied on three consecutive possessions. Ferragamo hit Bobby Thomas with a 42-yard touchdown pass, O'Leary scored from 10 yards out with 8:28 remaining in the first period, and a Buff fumble set the Huskers up on the 31 seven seconds later. Monte Anthony popped over from the one seven plays after that. Nebraska added another three scores in the second quarter.

A Buff penalty set up a one-yard plunge by Tony Davis and a fumble preceded a Ferragamo-to-Brad Jenkins fiveyard scoring pass. Colorado mishandled the ensuing kickoff and Nebraska recovered on the Buff's one. O'Leary scored from there, giving Nebraska 42-7 halftime lead. Colorado lost the ball on fumbles and a pass interception on their first four third-quarter possessions. Three of the turnovers led to Husker scores.

Anthony scored from the one, Gary Higgs from the two and Dave Gillespie from the 14. St. NORMAN, Okla. (AP) Second-ranked Oklahoma set another record Saturday but it was a dubious one as the Sooners fumbled 13 times in plowing to a 3.9-7 victory over Iowa State. "There's nothing like watching two well-oiled machines," Sooner defensive boss Larry Lacewell said of the sloppily played Big Eight contest.

"It was a sloppy game," summed up Coach Barry Switzer, whose Oklahoma teams have set a host of NCAA offensive marks rolling to 22 straight victories over 2h'i seasons. The 13 Sooner fumbles broke the school record set against Northwestern in 1959. But it was a series of Iowa State turnovers caused by a swarming Oklahoma defense led by 260pound tackle Leroy Selmon that put the Cyclones in a 26-0 hole at the half and insured an easy Sooner win. While the Cyclones could not take advantage of its opponent's miscues, the lightningquick Sooners did. All-American halfback Joe Washington scored on runs of three and six yards to become the secondleading scorer in Sooner history with 242 points.

Switzer did not have an explanation for the Sooner errors. "I don't know," he said. "Those things things happen. Joe Washington has never been a fumbler, but he was losing the ball today. "I'm pleased with the victory" he added.

"But at thjs point we still don't have the consistency we want." Iowa State Coach Earle Bruce said he didn't know the number of his team's mistakes, "but we made plenty of them. You can't make mistakes and fumble twice in a row against Oklahoma. When you do, you get down real quick." "I wish Oklahoma well," Bruce added, "but I'm glad we're through wih them." The Sooners have not lost in 36 consecutive games. Kan. COLUMBIA, Mo.

OPEN DAILY 10-10 SUN. 10-6 EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) Illinois, looking a different team in the second half, rallied from a 1-3-point deficit on the strong passing arm of quarterback Kurt Steger and upset Michigan State 21-19 in Big Ten college football Saturday.

The Spartans were two-touchdown favorites going into the game. Steger threw three secondhalf touchdowns, one on a fake field goal play, to keep the Illini one game behind Ohio State and Michigan in the Big Ten. The Illini meet both league powers next month. No. 16 Michigan State turned the ball over six es but exploded late in the game in a desperate effort to salvage a tie.

However, a run on a twopoint conversion try that would have tied the game was stopped short. Illinois was butterfingered in the first half, losing two of three fumbles, but was lightning quick in the air in the second. 1 "We didn't really play much differently in the second half than in the first half." said Illini Coach Bob Blackman. "It's awfully easy when a team has fumbles to think that the whole team is playing bad, but it isn't true. The best ballcarrier in the world is going to fumble once in a while.

Our team was playing inspired ball from the beginning." ANN ARBOR, Mich. (API Wingback Jim Smith burst 77 yards for a touchdown on the second play of the game and Rob Lytle scored four TDs Saturday to lead seventh-ranked Michigan to a 55-7 Big Ten football clubbing of Indiana. It was the 40th consecutive game without a loss at home for the Wolverines, who now stand 4-0 in the conference and 5-0-2 over-all. Indiana, 2-5 overall, slipped to 1-3 in the league. Michigan, which beat Northwestern 69-0 last week, outscored opponents 224-7 in its last four home conference games.

Smith's score, the sixth longest from scrimmage Michigan history, came on a reverse down the right sideline. Seven minutes later, tailback Gordon Bell sprinted 53 yards off left tackle for another touchdown, as the Wolverines began imitating their last slaughter. SUtl. thru OCT. 26, 29 1975 NVestern-Wisc.

MADISON Wis. (AP) Billy Marek topped the 00-yard career rushing mark with 198 yards and two-touchdowns in 36 carries, powering Wisconsin to a 1-7-14 Big Ten college football victory over Northwestern. Marek gained 139 of his yards in the second half and scored the go-ahead touchdown on a 54-yard cutback scamper with 4:09 left in the third quarter as the Badgers overcame a 14-10 halftime deficit. The stumpy senior tailback became the 30th runner in collegiate football history to exceed 3,000 yards as he brought his total to 3,161. Northwestern 's Greg Boykin gained 130 yards in 25 carries and scored one touchdown, but lost three fumbles, two of them deep in Badger territory.

The Wildcats had eight fumbles, losing the ball four times to drop to a 3-4 record, 2-2 in the Big Ten. Wisconsin has an identical record. IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) Tony Dungy tossed touchdown passes and Jim Perkins ran for a pair-of touchdowns Saturday to lift Minnesota to a 31-7 -Big Ten Conference football victory over sluggish Iowa. Iowa, a six-point favorite, drove 47 yards for a score on its first possession, but afterwards the Hawkeyes managed only two first downs. A fumble recovery set up the Gophers' first touchdown, which Dungy picked up on a seven-yard pass to Ron Kullas.

He also capped a 68-yard drive in the final minute of the first half with a 13-yard strike to Jeff Anhorn. The victory was Minnesota's first in four conference games and left the Gophers with a 4-3 overall mark. Iowa, which has not won two straight games since 1968, fell to 1-3 and 1-6. A crowd of 59,160 the largest since 1965 saw Iowa manage 115 yards total offense and finish with only four first downs. Minnesota had 331 total yards.

Notre Dame took its last lead of the afternoon early in the fourth quarter on a 27-yard field goal by Dave Reeve. But the Trojans roared back with a 71-yard, nine-play drive and went ahead to stay on Evans' two-yard run with 7:28 remaining.

Quarterback Joe Montana tried to rally the Irish but cornerback Danny Reece picked off his pass at the Irish .35 to set up Walker's field goal. The loss, coupled with Notre Dame's 10-3 setback to Michigan State three weeks ago, marked the first time in 12 years the Irish have drmpped two straight games at home. The Irish, 5-2, held a 14-7 lead on Al Hunter's 52-yard touchdown run in the first quarter and Tom Lopienski's 13-yard score with a retrun of a blocked punt late in the second period. The Trojans, unbeaten in seven games, relied heavily on Bell's running, but Evans completed several key passes, including a 21-yarder to Shelton Diggs for USC's first touchdown in the second quarter.

That put the Trojans ahead 7-6. Notre Dame went ahead shortly before the end of the first half after Luther Bradley blocked a punt by Walker and Lopienski ran it in for the touchdown. Bell's touchdown came early in the third period and EMM5 jans scored seven touchdowns in the final two periods to overwhelm the Irish. This year Southern Cal took the opening kickoff and managed just two yards before punting. On the second play, Hunter, a sophomore halfback, took the ball around right end for a 52-yard touchdown.
