PRISON SHIP MARTYRS MONUMENT IN FORT GREENE PARK During the Revolutionary War. 11.000 American youths, who were imprisoned by the British in rotting anchored ships, perished alongside our Brooklyn shores. The bones of these martyrs lie in 20 slate caskets in the vaults. The plan to erect a monument in recognition of the services 10 their country and to humanity of the 11.000 young men who perished in those prison ships, was strongly and effectively urged by Walt Whitman, editor of the Brooklyn Eagle. The tomb was restored in 1839.
