H. ROTH BREWERY Eis ter C2s Bids for the construction of six sections of improved roads, aggregating over nine miles were opened yesterday by the county commissioners. Proposals were submitted by 22 contractors, many bidding on several sections. The bids were submitted on the unit system, on estimates of eon stniction furnished by the county engineers, and it required the whole afternoon to record them. The bids in some instances run ever close and the successful contractors will not be know until the tabulations are all made which will take several day Among the roads for which bids were presented were the Monongahela-Donors rood and a portion of the Monongi-bela Pike.

Entertained for her Sea Delightful in its appointmentt and enjoyable in every detail was the surprise reception given by Mrs. William S. Shepler last night in honor of her son Clair, the occasion was his birthday anniversary and for a number of weeks carefully laid plans have been maturing for the event.

The guests to the number of about thirty assembled at the home and upon his arrival he was showered with con' gratulations. He accepted all gracious ly and proceeded in his own hospitable way to make all feel welcome. A most delightful evening was spent at cards, including euchre and 500 and other diversions helped to make the affair most delightful. The card games were spirited and much friendly rivalry arose. No prizes were awarded.

At a late hour an elaborate collation was served by the hostess. The house was beautifully decorated in yellow and white and the artistic ar rangement of flowers and ribbons lent a charm to the occasion. The colors were also carried out in the serving. Mr. Shepler was the recipient of a Lumber of very hatdsome Rifts, as tokens of esteem from his friends.

It was a late hour when the affair finally came to a close and the guests departed with memories of a very pleasant evening. The hostess was assisted by hei sister, Mrs. Heins. The only out of town gueets were Dr. and Mrs.

E. P. Sleppy, of Summit Park. Miss Fannie McClain of Uniontown, is a visitor with the family of Dr. H.

Billick. Mrs. Simon Lilly and Mrs. John Van Voorhis are spending the day with Mrs. Henry Snyder at Baidland.

Mrs. Harry Johnson, Miss Edna Per-cival, Miss Kathryn Blair, of West Elizabeth and Miss Helen Hornbake, of California, are guests of Mrs. Harry T. Zimmer. Mrs.

C. C. Stange and son Charles and D. C. Parkinson left for Atlantic City last evening to spend several weeks.

Bent ley ville, although not a large town, gives evidence that it is entitled to be enrolled among the progressive boroughs of Washington county by paving its street.

The Misses Madeline McCoy and Anna and Mary McPherson are Pittsburg visitors today The Misses Carrie and Lissa Anderson are shopping in Pittsburg today. The Misses Stella Foy and Ethel Aten have returned home from a sojourn at Chautauqua. Mrs. Fred Roth who has been confined to her home in Main street with typhoid fever, is greatly improved. We should all be thankful that this season's hot waves have all been of brief duration.

Miss Laura Fitch, of Venitia, is visiting friends here. Hiscox and Robinson are grading the Allegheny county road to the approach of the new bridge. There is somewhat of a fill to be made on this side, after the bridge is completed and this will wind up the contract of this firm. Addison Abbott and John Greena-wald witnessed the ball game in Mc-Keesport yesterday, between New Castle and Tube City team. Ody Abbott, a brother of the former is playing for New Castle.

The Monengahela ball team will play at BelleVernon this evening. That team is putting up a fair article of ball at present and is playing better than at any time this season. A good game is sure to be the result. Manager Gar-bart had not decided who would be his slab artist at this writing. Mr.

Anna Phillips, who underwent an operation at the Memorial hospital a few weeks ago is improving. Mrs. Alson B. Eggers and daughter Dorothy are visitors at the Gregg home, First ward. John Hawkins was brought to the hospital today suffering with injuries to one of his lower limbs which he sus tained while at work at the Acme mine at Bentleyville.

Watson, a well known man who has bt-en ill for about right" months. Death was caused by baralvsis with which the deceased has been a patient Mifferer. Herbert House and Mrs. Robert Patterson of this city, and Miss Wilda, Samuel and Thomas of Bentleyville Mr. Watson prior to his affliction was a well known coal man and was super intendent of the Acme mine at Bentley from the time of its opening until about two years ago He was succeed ed as superintendent by Donald Darrock.
