100000000 Free 0 0 Hearing covers liquor discount to private clubs OLYMPIA (AP) Questions relating to a "state subsidy of discrimination" and attempts to "legislate love" dominated a House Business and Professions Committee hearing Tuesday. At issue was a bill that would deny a 16.8 per cent liquor discount to any fraternal or other organization that practices 'discrimination because of race, color, creed, sex or national origin." The discount is available to all establishments holding a Class liquor license allowing them to serve liquor by the drink. Secretary of State Lud Kramer told the committee members a study he participated in indicated many minorities are "uptight because of this state subsidy of discrimination." "I say if you want to discriminate, go ahead," said Kramer, "but don't expect the state to subsidize that discrimination. This is one of the great rubs minorities have against government." Arguing against the bill was Floyd Buchanan, representing the Washington State Federation of Clubs, an organization made up of private clubs throughout the state including the Eagles, Elks, Moose and golf clubs and other social organizations. Buchanan argued the bill would violate the right of an individual "to choose his own friends and associates." He said the individual, not the state should have the right to determine if a club should exclude anyone for any reason.

Turning to the fiscal impact of the bill, Buchanan said private clubs receive liquor discounts amounting to about $1.2 million a biennium. But he said those same clubs pay more than $4.2 million a biennium in direct taxes resulting from their liquor operations. 0 -V V' a Dodge's customized 'Love Machine' Delight EOOklet Sailor's Shrimp Creole For more great shrimp recipe ideas, write: Recipes, Dept. ABC Television network has contracted for broadcast rights to the 71 race, which is to be a five-hour delayed show. It will be edited and broadcast as a two-hour special with the Wide World of Sports team.

Perhaps finally realizing that not everyone can go to Indianapolis, race promoters decided to try this type TV special for the 1971 race. ABC has an option on the '72 race, but that depends on what happens this year. The MCA corporation closed circuit broadcast, as in years past, will not take place this year. MCA says the venture was "unprofitable." Ready-To'Serve Keen chilled and hanriv cleaned 2 in your refrigerator always. For salads.

I've seen a lot of custom cars, but this is ridiculous. Boudoirs on wheels used to be something the boys joked about at the local drive-in while they sat in their cars watching the parade go through. Custom car builder George Barris and Dodge got together to create just what the boys were talking about. They call it the "Love Machine." What started as a 1971 Dodge Sportsman van became one of the plushest exercises in custom cars this writer has laid eyes on. Key feature is a six-foot round revolving sofa, covered in orange and parsimmon velvet, right in the center of the revamped van.

Nothing is left out of the Playboy bachelor pad interior, including a crystal chandelier mounted between two gold-framed mirrors and backed-up by four muted background lights. Everything else is there, just as if Hugh Hefner had planned it. Everything but the bunnies, of course. It may sound' facetious, but entertainment is provided by a color TV, a stereo tape unit with sound emanating from two organ speakers and a recorder and playback system. As you would expect, there is also a built-in bar.

For communication with the outside world, if the need should arise, there is an antique French telephone. Following the lines of a true Barris custom, a separate chauffeur's compartment is modestly sealed off from the rear boudoir, but is almost as lusciously executed, being upholstered in black patent leather and touched off by gold-air escutcheons. Power steering, power brakes and automatic transmission, along with air conditioning, provide as much comfort for the driver as possible under the circumstances. Featuring meticulous Barris craftsmanship, the exterior of the van was appropriately modified. The body was changed to create a belt line supporting dual vertical arches housing safety roll bars that also act as airfoil stabilizers at front and rear to provide stability at high speeds.

USS steel sheeting was formed for the aerodynamically-sctilptured body panels and polaroid charcoal tinted glass was installed for the side windows. At the rear, adjustable louvers were installed to match the louvers along the very top of the side viewing areas. The entire right side of the van opens upward and the body section beneath simultaneously lowers to provide easy access and egress. Providing function as well as novelty, the van is powered by a Dodge 318 cu. in.

V-8 engine. The suspension was beefed, for various reasons, by the addition of Carrera shock absorbers which, with the lowered center of gravity, provide a measure of road-hugging beyond the normal capabilities of the van. As the finishing touch on the entire exercise in sheet metal, is 40 coats of sunray yellow candy lacquer. Goodyear F70xl5 tires are mounted on shiny chrome-spoked wheels. Many prize-winning customs have come out of the North Hollywood shop of George Barris, but this is the wildest yet.

Barris has come a long way since that custom 1949 Mercury I first saw many years ago. No, the Dodge Love Machine is not intended to be a production item. If it were, there would be a waiting list. And you thought your camper was a groove! Bike licensing meets planned Bicycle licensing sessions sponsored by the Longview Police Department and Longview Police Reserve are scheduled on successive Saturdays early next month at three local elementary schools. Police Patrolman Brian Pedersen has charge of the activities, which are planned at Kessler School on April 3 at 9:30 a.m., at Broadway School on April 10, also at 9:30 a.m., and at Columbia Valley Gardens on April 17 at the same hour.

Pedersen explained that the license fee is 25 cents per bicycle, and that bikes are stamped and marked with reflectorized tape at no extra cost. Licensed bicycles, the officer pointed out, are more easily identified if stolen, or in instances where ownership disputes may arise.
