Local science fiction novelist Steven Barnes will speak at 8:30 am before the walk begins The walk will start on the Lower Columbia College campus and then go up northwest on Olympia Way east on Ocean Beach Highway and south on 15th Avenue back to the campus The Diversity Task Force will give free T-shirts to the first 75 children ages 6 to 14 who participate based on shirt size availability All walkers imder 18 years old must have a parent or guardian sign a per News of Record Grace and Sam Hagen Grace Genevieve Hagen 84 of Longview died May 18 2001 at St Jolm Medical Center Her husband Sam Hagen 89 died March 12 2001 at St Jolm Medical Center The family withheld the news of Mr death until now Mrs Hagen was bom Feb 22 1917 in Chicago to Robert James and Ruth Eugenia (Wood) Arkell Her mother died when she was 5 years old and her father died when I she was 10 She was then placed in 1 the Illinois Masonic Home She graduated from LaGrange High School in Illinois Mrs Hagen was a homemaker and member of the Lemon Grove I Club She erjoyed playing I canasta collecting antiques and was an avid reader of history mysteries and more She was outgoing friendly warm and gregarious Afterawhirl-J wind romance of three weeks she and her husband married on April 191937 Mr Hagen was bom Aug 15 1911 in Minot ND to Hans and Samulina Hagen He and his wife "moved to Longview three years ago 1 coming from San Diego to be near family Mr Hagen graduated from high school in Minot and attended art school in Chicago to become a com- mercial artist in Minnesota and San He retired in the early 1980s He was proud of his Norwegian itage and erjoyed art antiques cars woodworking and puttering in his shop He was honest and had a good sense of humor Mr and Mrs Hagen were former reading and until tire later years sport fishing On Oct 3 1952 he married Mabel George She survives him at home Also surviving are two sons Harold Palmer of Kelso and Mark Palmer of Beaverton Ore two brothers Earl and Stan Palmer both of Campbell River Vancouver Island Canada and nieces and nephews He was preceded in death by two sisters Edna Milner and Ruth Pidcock At his request no local service will be held A memorial service will take place in Campbell River BC A VFW memorial plaque will be placed at the Willamette National Cemetery in Portland Cremation will take place imder the direction of Dahl-McVicker Funeral Home Orville Hesseldahl Orville Hesseldahl 92 of Longview died May 22 2001 at the Hospice Care Center He was bom Dec 16 1908 in Topeka Kan and lived in Longview for the past year coming from El Centro Calif Mr Hesseldahl was a retired auto mechanic He eryoyed fishing and loved working on all kinds of engines He is survived by two sons Daniel Hesseldahl of Las Vegas Nev and Timothy Hesseldahl of Porterville Calif five daughters Marjorie Gilliland and Myma French both of Longview Janet Brown in Virginia Leta Tyler of Odessa Texas and Arlene Alvarez of Imperial Calif 21 grandchildren 15 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews At his request no service will be held Cremation will take place under the direction of Cascade Northwest Funeral Chapel Kelso survived by a son Bruce Hagen of Santa Rosa Calif two daughters Dianne Lowe and Claudette Salas both of Longview his sister Olga Wizer of Kingston Wash her two siblings Herbert Arkell of Chicago and Mary Jane Hogan of St Joseph Mich seven grandchildren 18 great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grand-childrea Mrs sister Ruth Arkell preceded her in death Private family services have taken place Kelso died May 23 2001 at an adult care facility in Longview He was bom Nov 14 1919 in Portland to Swedish immigrants Paul A (Johansson) Palmer and Emma (Rudeen) Palmer He lived most of his early years in southwest Oregon and moved to Longview in 1953 Mr Palmer moved to Canada in 1933 and in 1940 he enlisted in the 1st Canadian Scottish Local 1953 Regiment He later transferred to the US Army He was discharged in 1945 and spent most of the next five to six years alternating between working with the fishing industry in southeast Alaska and falling timber for Weyerhaeuser Co at the Longview divisioa In 1951 he went to work for Weyerhaeuser full time He retired in 1981 He was a member of the Living Word Christian Center Church and the Veterans of Foreign Wars He eryoyed carpentry building everything from birdhouses to full-sized structures Other interests included the outdoors traveling his garbage writing two of them for around $700 total and cashing them She said she later came forward out of guilt Police booked Wanda Lea Austin 51 at the jail on suspicion of forgery then released her Disturbing notes Longview police are investigating seven bizarre notes left on a Longview
