The regiments from the Gulf States are admirably drilled, and an old Frenchman said yesterday, that neither the elder uor the present Napoleon ever marehed finer troops to the battle field. All here are well armed ami equipped, and those with whom 1 have conversed say they intend to fight for their altars and their lire-idos, aud if need lie, they will cheerfully lay down their lives in such defence. All history proves that mere numbers can do nothing towards the subjugation of such men, aud 1 can sec no reason why the present should be an exception to the general. rule. A all events relying- upon God first, our own strong arms and lie justness of otir cause next, we intend to keep our.

Our Common Council held a meeting Friday night, to make all necessary arrangements for a proper defence of our city and State. Mr. Geo. This motion was amended by appointing a committee to wait on Gov. Letcher, and inform him that the entire forces and means of the city were at his disposal. Joseph Tills, Jos. It. Skinner, Robert B.

B. PRICE A BBO. Columbia, April 14, 30-tf We find rill oue of the Southern papers the following: The New York Herald has subscribed three thousand dollars towards the war which Lincoln is now making upon tin. South, and now boasts of his meanness. The statement that we ever made any money out of the South is simply false.

Our entire circulation in all the slave States lias, at no time, equalled that in any Ward of this city, or in the single State of Connecticut. Moreover, it is not by circulation, butty advertisements, lohich cwnefivm the city of New York, that our' money is made. Herald. Just so, precisely but will Mr. Bennett please inform us how many advertisements he supposes he would have from the city of New York, provided this port were not the entrepot of Southern products, and the great iniKUlfnW'tfirtiiiot made us tlieir Tacfors, their agents, their brokers, their importers, their shippers, for $200,000,000 of raw cotton, how much money would our millionaries have had'witli which to have furnished Air.

Lincoln the sinews of war? We know our merchants have been made to believe they arc going to preserve the Union by force; but we have a firm conviction that they are destined to be terribly mistaken. When they find that this fratieidal civil war has irretrievably aud irrevocably dissolved the Union, which might have been preserved and restored by a peace policy, they will awaken to the truth of the warnings which this journal, with all eerily has vainly 'uttered. After our commerce and trade are diverted to some other localities, and our resources wasted in au unnecessary war, and reason has usurped tin- place of passion, depend upon it these views will be found to be the correct- ones. W.B. PRICE April 14, 60-tf Columbia, Ala. I From the Montgomery Advertiser, loth. The Capital Not Moved. Our local editor was misled by an apparently- authentic report in stating that Congress had on yesterday, decided upon removing the Capital from Montgomery to Richmond.

There is good grounds to infer that the decision was quite the reverse of this last week. There seems to be no doubt hero that the Congress will adjourn within a few days, to be called together at Richmond by the President should there lie occasion for a summer session. It is therefore probable that the President will visit Virginia should lib presence be needed there, and the Congress may he convened at that point should he deem it expedient. The understanding is that the business of lie government will be conducted- at Montgomery 3 heretofore, through the Executive Department j. It is thought by some that the conditional determination of the Cdngress to sit at Richmond, is only the entering wedge to the removal of the Government others think otherwise.

Of course everything connected witli the question is enveloped in a cloud of doubt, secrecy not having boon removed from the action of Congress. Certain it is, however, that Montgomery is still the temporary Capital of the Confederate States albeit, the Congress may be convened to hold a summer session in Richmond. Texas Items. The Star State Jeffersonian says -thill Col. Jas.

Bolling, one of the Texas Commissioners to the Indian Nations has returned, and reports to a man the Cliero-kces, Choctaws, Creeks and Cliickasaws are in favor of Texas and the Southern Confederacy. A correspodent of the Houston Telegraph, from Bernham, says: Crops here are very promising; without another drop of rain, more corn will be raised than can be consumed in this section. The ground is thoroughly soaked. The only fear is that there will be too much of tho good thing. No damage done yet.

Woodvillc, Ala. j. S. VANN. Dec.

24th, 59. 7-tf From the Washington Intelligencer. Alabama Sentiment. A subscriber residing in the city of Mobile, and who expresses dissent from the course of the Intelligencer in the present political crisis, intimates that we have lost the "independence" formerly displayed in our columns, and no longer give au equal Rearing to tho two parties at issue in this civil feud. Our regular and impartial readers know that this charge is as our columns have conclusively shown since the outbreak of these troubles; but, in order to show our Alabama correspondent how much he is mistaken in his supposition, we very cheerfully give place to so much of his communication as relates to matters of public consent Mobile, April 27, 1861.

I write mainly to disabuse your mind You are deluded. We arc able to repulse the North effectively. I am a native of this State, aud I know her people aud her resources. What is true of this State is also true of our confederates. We of Alabama can put fifty thousand men in the field in thirty days, and yet not diminish our corps to any appreciable extent.

Our uegroes can abundantly provision us. They lire, therefore, an element of strength, and not of weakness, as our enemies suppose. They are contented, obedient and industrious; never more so. I speak what I know, for I own nearly a hundred slaves and have been a planter for twenty-two years. They will fight for us, not against us; and the hireling troops will feel the forces of this declaration when they desecrate our soil with the loot of invasion.

Our people are accustomed to the use of arms. Almost every man has a gun, and some have two or three. Wo can put a gun in the hands of every man in the State from sixteen to sixty years of age. Come on, then, ye tyrants and usurpers! You shall have such a reception as you deserve. Our small grain crops were never more promising.

We have diminished the area usually planted in cotton and increased our corn, crops accordingly. Thus we will be independent of tho world (including our late confederates, now our worst cne-miesjfor a supply of provisions. Again I say comb on, cuforce your laws, collect revenue, and maintain your flag, if you can. We tell yon-it cannot and shall not lie clone. AVe have plenty of money, mon and arms, and all the valor requisite to make them effective.

We never intend to live with you, nietber as ccjuais nor dependents. You are our enemies, and wc will treat yon as such until reason resumes its throne and justice is permitted to sway your people. Ilepoet fully, LEVI W. LAWLER. I hope you will publish this for the information of your readers uortli of Washington.
