TUESDAY, JANUARY 26, 1954 1Mb DAILY RbHUbLICAN, MONQNGAHtLA, PA. AOL WO Speaking of: Ceiim Cieft daft SACeDDoirijiDglh)ti SPORTS Announce Jayvee, Kitten Grid Cards by clair brown Locals Host California To Close First Half; Both Own 0-4 Records Coach Bill Parkinson's Monongahela Wildcat cagers, bolstered by a terrific showing at Charleroi Friday night, get a chance to climb out of the Section 5-A cellar as the locals close their first half race with California's Trojans here tonight. Both teams show identical 0-4 marks in league play with the visitors losing by much higher scores to the same foes as the 'Cats have met with the exception of the Brownsville game. In that tilt the Brownies edged the Trojans, 52-50, having earlier shaded the locals, 52-51. According to the Brownsville result the AROUND THE VALLEY: Arrangements have been completed for Herman Hickman, well-known former football coach, now a radio and television personality, to headline the speaking program for Donora-High School's "Home of Champions" banquet, honoring the 1953 WPIAL co-champion football squad, coaches and other Dragon sports personalities, including Arnold Galiffa, ex-West Point ace and now a New York Giant star.

Monday, February 22 is the date set for the fete. Speaking of Donora, the School Board there has reversed itself and granted increases for the Dracon football staff and also granted increases to non-athletic teachers for supervising extracurricular activities in the Junior and Senior High Schools. Jimmy Russell's football salary was upped from $1,200 to $1,300, while his assistants John P. "Moon" Clark and George. J.

Koval-cik received $200 and $100 increases respectively, Clark from $600 to $800 and Kovalcik from $400 to $500. Clark, as track coach, also received a $50 boost there from $150 to $200. All other athletic coaches at Donora High received boosts along the same lines. For example: Basketball mentor Charles "Jerry" Tha Kittens tied Redstone, in the opener, lost to Canonsburg but had the decision reversed when the Little Gunners were found to be using an ineligible player, defeated Donora and then lost to Charleroi and Monessen powerhouses. September 29 is the date set for the Trinity tilt at Trinity which will be the locals' opener.

Canonsburg and Charleroi will also be played away with Redstone, Donora and Monessen showing here. The schedules follow: MONONGAHELA HIGH1 SCHOOL JUNIOR VARSITY 1954 GRID SCHEDULE SEPTEMBER 13 Bellmar, away. 20 Centerville, away. 27 Washington, home. OCTOBER 5 Trinity, away.

11 Elizabeth, home. 18 California, home. 25 Open. NOVEMBER 1 Redstone, away. MONONGAHELA JUNIOR HIGH 1954 GRID SCHEDULE SEPTEMBER 29 Trinity, away.

OCTOBER 6 Redstone, home. 13 Canonsburg, away. 20 Donora, home. 27 Charleroi, away. NOVEMBER 3 Monessen, home.

Wunderlich, was jumped to $800 from $600 and baseball coach John J. Gidick from $250 to $400. Some of those salaries, especially the baseball "take," are very attractive, while some are not so impressive. Rab Currie, Charleroi cage coach, and Cougar followers who saw the Wildcat-Charleroi tilt Friday night and had seen the 'Cats play in previous games this season were very much impressed with the improved "driving" type of ball used by the locals which was lacking earlier in the season. Seven Games For Junior Varsity, Six For Junior High Attractive grid schedules for the 1954 season were announced today for Monongahela High's Junior Varsity eleven and the local Junior High School gridders.

Seven Games The Jayvces will play a seven-game card with the possibility of an eighth game being added to fill open on Cober 25. Opening with Bellmar's JVs on September 13, the locals will meet Centerville, Washington. Trinity, Elizabeth, California and Redstone Junior Varsities in that order. Bell-mar, Centerville, Trinity and Redstone will be met away while Elizabeth and California i 1 1 show here. The locals: are coached by one or more of the high school grid assistants, appointed each year by the head coach.

Trinity Junior High has been added to the Kitten schedule to give Elmo Natali's lads a six-game card, one more than they played last season. The other five opponents are the same five foes met during the '53 season in which the locals won 2, tied 1 and lost two games for a very good showing in their first season in Junior WPIAL football. Soccer Notes Remainder of AROUND THE TOWN: Lou 'Bimbo" Cecconi, ex-Donora and Pitt grid great who "almost" coached the Wildcat backs last season, was presented with a son by Missus Cecconi last week. The future Ail-American is the second child for Mr. and Mrs.

Bimbo. Their first was a little cheer leader. Bimbo, by the way, has Sharpsburg's cage team on top in Section 19. Soccer is in the air atop Wildcat Knoll. Although nothing definite has been said about this year's team or the schedule, booting sport hopefuls are anxiously awaiting the call for the first workouts.

Last season under new head grid coach Lig-nelli, the locals advanced to the semi-finals of the WPIAL playoffs, their first year in soccer competition. Plans are rapidly being made for the MHS All-Sports banquet which will replace the annual football fete here. The date has been set for April 21 and the local Booster Club will co-sponsor the event along with the high school athletic committee. More on the banquet will appear here later. Speaking of the Booster Club, don't forget the terrific show they are bringing here (to the high school auditorium) February 17 when the Du-quesne Tamburitzans furnish the entertainment in place of the annual Booster Minstrel.

Soccer Schedule Listed Idleness Loses Two Votes For Dukes In Poll Mooremen Retain Rating Behind Kentucky, Indiana Fives NEW YORK (UP) Holy Cross regained a place among the United Press top 10 college basketball teams today during a lull in the schedule which left Kentucky, Indiana and Duquesne 1-2-3 for the fifth week in row. The Crusaders, who have won 13 of their first 14 games, moved back among the select group (in 10th place) amid a week of limited activity because of mid-season examinations in most colleges. Of this week's top 10 teams, three did not play, while six others had only one game each. Same Teams As a result, the first five places in the ratings were occupied by the same teams as the previous week, with Oklahoma A and and Western Kentucky following the "Big Three." Aside from Holy Cross' advance, the only other changes among the top 10 found California advancing to a tie for sixth place with Minnesota, and Notre Dame moving up one notch to eighth place, exchanging places with Kansas. The 35 leading coaches who com prise the United Press Rating Board based their rankings on games played through Saturday night, Jan.

23. Kentucky, which ran its unde feated string to 12 by beating Tennessee in its only game last week, gained ground on Indiana and Duquesne, which were idle. Coach Adolph Rupp's Wildcats attracted 19 first-place votes (four more than last week) and 321 points as they widened their lead over the Hoosiers from eight to 16 points. 283 Points Indiana (12-1) had nine first-place ballots (one less than last week) and 305 points, while Duquesne, undefeated in 15 games, had six first-place votes (two less than a week ago) and 283 points. The Oklahoma Aggies (16-1) followed with 232 points, and Western Kentucky, unbeaten in 18 contests, had 168.

The Hilltoppers were the only team among the top 10 that played two games last week. Minnesota (10-2) remained in sixth place but had to share the berth this week with California (14-2), both receiving 109 points. Notre Dame, which attracted the remaining first place ballot, jumped one place to eighth with 83 points as it ran its record to 10-2; Kansas (8-3) dropped one place to ninth with 68 points, while Holy Cross advanced from a tie for 12th, replacing Louisiana among the top 10. LaSalle La Salle, with a 14-3 record, topped the second 10 group, only four points behind Holy Cross. LSU fell to 12th, followed in order by Wyoming, Duke, Iowa, Oklahoma City University, Oregon State, Texas, Bradley and North Carolina State.

Others among the 35 teams that received points in this week's ratings were Brigham Young, Navy, St. Louis, Niagara, Louisville, Illinois, Idaho, Santa Clara, Rice, UCLA, Dayton, Texas Tech, Connecticut, Seattle and Cornell. lert of Arden; Louis Bonazzo and Frank Packey of Meadowlands; Frank Lesnock, James Calvert, Larry Mahonna of Lincoln Hill; Jack Shultz of Wolfdale and Bud Piacenza of Washington. There will be an important league meeting Wednesday, Jan. 27, at 8 p.m.

Hotx Trojan mentor Bill Watkins has built his attack around Roger Hotz, 6-3 center, who showed well last season as a sub for since graduated Mike Digon. Hotz gets considerable help from Mike Fay-ak, who starred for Charleroi before transferring to California, Dale Kennedy, a holdover from last season, and a lad with a Thymic name, Sergei (pronounced Sir-Gay) Tuday, all regulars or near regulars of last season.

Fayak, 6-1 is a forward, Kennedy, 5-11, a guard and Tuday, 5-10, is a guard. John Kropchak, who teams with Fayak at the forwards, is a 6-0 senior, who also saw considerable action last season. Kropchak, Kennedy and have been sharing the scoring lately. Dick Shoemaker and Bill Saxe will also see action tonight. 7-7 Mark California shows a 7-7 record having posted an impressive 6-3 exhibition record.

They followed the exhibition record with a 46-34 loss to Monessen. a 68-37 defeat by Charleroi, a 56-37 shellacking at Donora, in league play, then topped Point Marion, 57-31, before dropping the 52-50 decision to Brownsville. Coach Parkinson of the 'Cats will go with either Lee Matuga or Jay Matuga and Sam Malena at the forwards, Bob Taylor at center, Jim Mendola and Ron Pellegrini at the guards. The locals are looking for their first win in Section 2 play while the Trojans have also failed to garner a victory in the first half. In the only Junior High game played yesterday, Charleroi rallied in the second half, especially with a 16-1 fourth period, to clob ber Monessen 54-30 and finish or top at the end of the first half race. Walls Favored Over Harrison Tonight TORONTO (UP)-Earl Walls of Toronto was a 2-1 favorite over Tommy Harrison of Los Angeles for tonight's 10-round bout which both hope will gain them a shot at heavyweight champion Rocky Marciano.

Walls, unbeaten during the last two years, indicated he will aim for an early knockout. TUESDAY TOPICS: Should Pittsburgh interests be successful in obtaining a National Basketball League franchise the team would have "territorial" rights to all Duquesne University graduates. The last time Pittsburgh had a team they didn't do so well with only local talent but then the schools didn't have Tuckers, Ricketts', and Greens at that time. In contrast to the $100 raise given Jimmy Russell, Donora grid coach (mentioned above) Har-Brack is said to have given Kenny Karl a new three-year pact with a $500 yearly increase. Several district Class A high schools are thinking of jumping to AA while several others will be forced to due to increased enrollments.

West View, Monongahela High's new opponent next season has already climbed to AA while German Township is seriously considering such a move. California will be forced to make the jump when the jointure with Centerville becomes final.
