8 Santa Cruz Sentinel Tuesday, June 19, 1936 Mantle Smacks Record Homer PCC Prexies Hit Penalties To Be Made In Changes 1231 Several Surprises Five Sports To Have New Mentors During Next Year By Arnold Wechter Several surprise changes were listed among the 1956-57 coaching assignments for Santa Cruz high school with new head men taking over the reins in five sports. Principal Lee T. Sims, in making the announcement of assignments, said they were tentative. New head coaches were named in varsity football, and and lightweight basketball, track and baseball. As expected, Larry Siemering was named head football By Jack Stevenson Berkeley (A.P.).

Penalties assessed Washington and UCLA by the Pacific Coast conference for under-the-table aid to athletes by booster clubs are due for imminent review and possible change. These penalties include the loss of one year's eligibility by football players at UCLA. mentor with Bob (Stormy) Hile-f man as his chief assistant, ham Maynard is again expected to were taken in separate conference meetings and it was felt the review of all cases should be taken at one time. On May 6, the conference placed Washington on probation for two years. In that time the school cannot win a sporta title, play in a post-season game or share in Rose Bowl receipts.

This amounted to a $52,000 slap in the pocketbook. Two weeks later UCLA was placed on probation for three years, fined an additional $15,000 to bring its total loss to $93,000 and its football players lost a year of eligibility unless it was proved they did not receive illegal aid from booster groups. Since then a UCLA alumnus, J. Miller Leavy has charged that a group of Southern California alumni raised $71,235 and paid it to 60 Trojan athletes over a two-year period. He charged also that California had a "phony job racket" in which athletes were promised or given off-campus jobs with pay but little or no work.

California officials denied that allegation but last week said they had found 20 technical violations revision of conference rules and reaffirmed "that each institution has the individual responsibility for Investigating each coach and booster club covering activities during the year 1955-56 to ascertain the degree of compliance with conference rules." Reports of such activities are to be made to the conference commissioner by July 15. The September 1 deadline for review of the several cases indicated a desire to settle the turbulent athletic situation prior to the start of the football season. Practice in the PCC begins on that date. President Robert G. Sproul of California, chairman of the council, said, "The presidents will rule with a firm hand from now on." Yesterday's action probably was their strongest move in athletics although Sproul said there were "widely different opinions on how far we should go in revision." Sproul said there had been criticism of inequalities in the penalties against Washington and UCLA and these criticisms were "possibly justified." He pointed out that action against the two Senators Move Closer To Sox With 3-2 Win The Capitola Senators moved within one-game of the Aptos White Sox yesterday afternoon at the Mid-County's Capitola stadium as they handed the league leaders a 3-2 setback in a well-played game.
