catch some air Monday By Amy ME Fischer THE DAILY NEWS A former Cowlitz County deputy who served on the Kalama City Council during the 1990s died Friday at St John' Medical Center when a blood vessel burst in his brain Douglas Reel 59 was forced to retire last November after 31 years in law enforcement because of ongoing medical problems Sheriff Bill Mahoney said Monday had no real interest in leaving the profession He enjoyed it He excelled at it If I could have 10 more just like him it would be great He was a good good said Mahoney choking up Reel whose obituary appears on Page B2 was a quiet courteous steady man who was calm during chaos Mahoney said cool head made him an asset on the Kalama Civil Service Commission during tumultuous times when the city was at odds with police chiefs Mike Pennington and Lonnie Meadows he said not the land of guy to jump out of the chair and get emotional about Mahoney said As a deputy Reel worked hard to help citizens understand how the criminal justice system worked and make them feel been treated well After serving as patrol deputy and later detective Reel headed the Field Training Officer program where he taught FTO instructors how to train new recruits He was well-liked by his peers and had many letters of appreciation and commendation in his personnel file Mahoney said Reel ran for Kalama City Council twice before he was elected in 1991 He lost his seat in 1999 when elections officials settled a 236-vote tie between him and his opponent Scott Wheeler by drawing lots Mahoney said Reel went out of his way to make other lives better out there bragging about it or drawing attention to Mahoney said would just quietly go about what needed to be Reel is survived by his wife Val Reel two sons Dennis Reel and Brian Reel a
