Game time is 8:15 p.m. A loss tomorrow means little disgrace to the locals who recently sent' their prestige soaring high with Santa IQ-Santa Cruz Sentinel-News Rookie Comes Through Yankees Trounce Cleveland ruzans. iu cayiuic mc inhuv Andy Carey contributed one in the sixth. Al Rosen homered for Cleveland in the sixth.

Bob Porterfield of Washington won his third game from the White Sox. The Senators knocked out Connie Johnson with a four-run fourth inning, and collected 13 hits in all. Minnie Minoso drove in the only Sox run. Ned Garver won the Detroit opener. Ray Boone and Charley Maxwell backed him up with a double and homer apiece, each batting in two runs.

The second game was Jackie Jensen's show-as he became the first American leaguer to drive in 100 runs this year. The Boston outfielder accounted for four runs with a homer and bases-loaded single. Kansas City collected 13 hits, while Art Ceccarelli' limited the Orioles to four, including a two-run homer by Hal Smith. Johnny Klippstcin gained his third victory over Brooklyn, but had to be relieved with two out in the ninth inning of the opener by Hershell Freeman. Wally Post siammed his 32nd homer in the second inning to get the Reds off in front.

In the nightcap Free Mills Wrecks Joe Sturgess' No-Hitter Bid A seventh inning hit and run spoiled Joe Sturgess' chance for a no-hit softball game in the City league tournament but his excellent performance was enough for his Wriglev's Gum team to defeat the Jaycees, 4 1, at DeLa-veaga park last night. Wriglcy's jumped on loser Pierce for four runs on two hits in the first frame to take an early lead. It was all that was needed and all that was garnered as the Gum crew was blanked the remaining distance. Jim Mills singled in the last inning to wreck the no-hitter. He was later brought in by Len Gcr-kensmeyer to keep Sturgess from even a shutout.

Two opponents were walked by the winning pitcher and he struck out 13. Pierce sent one lone man to first and struck out eight. Early Wynn, the Cleveland starter, was hustled to the showers in the second inning after allowing four runs. More heat was taken off the Yankees when the best the fourth-place Boston Red Sox could do was split in a double-header with the Detroit Tigers. Detroit- won the opener, 6-1, and Boston grabbed the nightcap, 6-4, falling five games behind New ork.

In the other American league contest, the Kansas City Athletics conked the Baltimore Orioles 9-2. In the National league, the Brooklyn Dodgers were slapped down by the Cincinnati Redlegs, 8-5 and 6-5. It was the first time the Bums had lost a double bill this year, and coupled with Milwaukee's 3-2 victory over the New York Giants it left the Braves 11 games behind Brooklyn in second place. Philadelphia nabbed a pair from the St. Louis Cardinals, 11-9 and 8-3.

The Pittsburgh Pirates edged the Chicago Cubs. 2-1. The ankees called Coleman 110 from their American association farm, and he made his first start August 15, going 5's innings to beat Baltimore, 12-6. In his only other appearance, also against Baltimore August 20, he pitched a third of an inning to preserve a 3-2 victory for Boh Grim. It was the other way around last night when Coleman got into trouble with two away and a run home in the eighth inning, (rim came in and applied the stopper the rest of the way.

Joe Collins two-run homer was the big blow of the Yankee second inning and Jr. League Csipture North Monterey Bay Lions, the "hitlcss wonders" of the Junior league, swooped into the circuit's championship seat yesterday as they walloped the Odd Fellows, 14-3, at Harvey West stadium. The Lions, who usually win by knocking less hits but somehow scoring more runs than their opponents, managed to lash out seven hits against the losers which is about their best productive total at the plate this year. Slim Gary Bobbitt, who comes through in the clutches, blasted two singles and drove in one run to pave the way. Limiting the Odd Fellows to one hit, a single by Bagby, Mike Mason hurled the victory.

Working seven innings, he struck out six and displayed good control as he walked four. Scoring three runs in the first on one hit, the Lions went into an early lead. They then proceeded to tally in all but the second and seventh innings, using their base blows at necessary moments. Mason was working with a no-hit game until the fourth when he allowed the bingle. The game wound up the regular season for the Junior league but there are more tentative all-star contests.

The wheel of chance rolled for Australia yesterday and sent America's slump-ridden tennis champion, Vic Seixas, against his long-time jinx, Ken For NY man relieved Joe Black in the seventh, and got credit for his fifth victory although he left for a pinchhitter when the Reds scored two runs to break a 4-4 tie in the ninth. Philadelphia won its sixth straight, overcoming a six-run deficit in the opener. Robin Roberts registered his 21st victory in the opener, surviving a four-run Card outburst in the first inning and a five-run splurge in the fourth when Wally Moon hoisted a grand-slam homer.

Saul Rogo-vin won the nightcap as the Phils came from behind again. It was Del Funis night, and he celebrated by getting three hits in the opener and a double in the second game. It appeared as if Jim Hearn would beat the Braves, but Milwaukee routed him in the seventh inning with all their runs on three walks and two singles. Warren Spahn tossed a six-hitter at the Giants. Ramon Mejias doubled in the eighth at Pittsburgh and Johnny O'Brien singled to break up a 11 pitching duel between the Bites' Rnv Face and Paul Minner.

return to the national rating, was impressive in workouts all week. His left hook was sharp and Olson has been bothered by other left-hookers. He showed a good right, too, plus supreme confidence. He held the No. 4 ranking before entering the army.

The fact he's had nowhere near Olson's experience in the professional ring 45 bouts to 71 for the champion was pooh-poohed by his manager, Mike Seanlan. "He's got the know-how," gays Seanlan. "1 hope he can catch Olson with that, left honk and knock him down. If he does, he'll hike him all the way out of there." The fight will be Olson's second since his third round knockout by Moore. Manager Sid Flaherty says Bobo is ready to cut loose.

Olson earned an unspectacular decision over Jimmy Martinez at Portland, two weeks ago, but Flaherty insists he'll be sharper against Giambra. "This might not go all the way," Flaherty adds. "This kid is good, but my boy is the best in the division." Kntenza, 75, died yesterday at the swfe11" Veterans Administration hospital. Bruns is teamed with Cyclone Anaya and Senor Jar-liic in a six man tag match against the Sharpe ltrolhrri aud I'aucho Tito, title has been a long sought plan and until this year hopes lor a championship were low. But Coach Len Beatie built his squad into a well-balanced unit that has gone undefeated in four consecutive games. And only one touchdown has been scored against them.

Little known to Seahawk filberts is the fact that when the locals were unscored upon afte. their first three games, they tied a national semi-pro football record. Had they held San Francisco scoreless last week, they would have broken the mark thev now hold with the Eagle Rock A. C. of Los Angeles.

Couch Beatie says his team should now be record holders. A miscue in the defensive hackfield that he had emphatically warned against accounted for a pass being completed behind his secondary; it resulted in a TD. If the Seahawks plan on gaining more laurels by defeating the Red Haiders tomorrow, they'll have to put in a better performance than last week. For the Presidio outfit will bring to town the toughest team the locals have yet gone against. To attest to that fact, is the fine game tomorrow's visitors put in against Fort Old last year.

As nearly everyone knows, Fort Ord has the best service team in the nation and in the past years have had a number of professional players, first stringers, on their Last year Presidio lot to Warriors by just one point! And for the past two years Fort Old has also chalked up wins over the San Francisco 49er rookie squads. The visitors will use the split-T formation as does Beatie with his charges. Their mentor, Lieut. Lynch, is a former UC coach and Lynch's two assistants are former Santa Clara grid scholars. This week, the Seahawks held light workouts, putting most of the sweat into their passing game.

Beatie feels that they will take to the air more than before, mixing the plays better. He said that Chuck Filice, starting signal caller, is in better shape now. His running ability was hampered by a bad knee last week and thus hurt his game. Beatie also added that Gene Mazzei, former all-CCAL quarterback at SCHS in 1951. will see action.

The "Madcap" was probably the greatest field general to emerge from the local school in some time. They'll scrimmage tonight in preparation for the game. Working out the day before a contest isn't usually considered a good practice but Beatie claims he has a few wrinkles to iron out. As for a prediction on the game, Beatie said, "If we keep playing good defensive ball like we have, and the offensive unit starts rolling as well, I think we'll win it." And he's banking on the return of four first string linemen to make his forecasting come true. Knd Bill Whited.

tackle Dick Foerster, guard Wayne Thorpe, and center Bill Nicoaisen are the Beatie hopes will get the forward wall moving along. The probable starting lineup, according to Beatie, reads: Nicolaisen, center; Fd Dayton and Adrian Smelier, guards; Foerster and Thorp, tackles; Cunningham and Sneed, ends; Filice, quarterback; Dave Gal-legns and Bob Scofield, halfbacks, and Yirg Lemly, fullback. Oh yes, the mystery man, Ed Smith, will probably make the game, too! It was the enigmatic Smith who scored the tying touchdown last week. Doug Kranich, a young lefty still in high school, will probably go to the mound. Although he isn't an exceptionally good pitcher now, great things are expected of him in the future. Santa Cruz will probably field Bill Mclntyre on the hill. He is an above average chucker and has hurled the Merchants to many of their victories over Felton. By John Chandler The Associated Press 01' Casey Stengel and rookie Rip Coleman were taking the bows for the New York Yankees today, and whether you love 'em or hate 'em, you've got to admit that when the chips are down the Bronx Bombers usually come through.

Stanford's Chuck Taylor switched on sports editor Walt Carnage. He asked the questions and answered them with Carnage fighting to squeeze in a word. Waldorf lamented, "It's a lot duller" with quarterback Paul Larson gone via graduation. "He sometimes did unconventional things," said Waldorf, "but that way we kept the fans awake and the alumni loose." The draw was made yesterday on the front lawn of the West Side Tennis club by Secretary of State John Foster Dulles.

When the secretary plucked the names of Seixas and Rosewall from the big silver bowl, grins popped on the faces of the Australians. It was the pairing they wanted since Rosewall holds a mystic spell over the 31-year-old Philadelphian whom he's beaten nine straight times before the challenge round. Then Seixas won to help bring back the cup. The rival captains, Harry Hop-man of Australia and Bill falbert of the United States issued con-litlent statements of victory. "I am sure we will win," said Hopman, a grim little newsman from Melbourne.

"I figure we are sure to win both the singles matches with Seixas and have an even chance in the other three the two matches with Trabert and the douhles." "We'll win 3 0," countered Talbert, a crew cut Wall street executive who helped bring hack the cup a year ago from down under. "That means Sunday we ill be playing for fun.
